Wedding Ring Rash (Pic attached)

Hi all!

Has anyone had any success treating wedding ring rash?

I've been wearing my engagement and wedding band for a few years and suddenly in the last few months I’ve started noticing a rash. It’s sort of bumpy and red and my finger seems to swell.

I don’t wear the rings at night and it seems worse when I wear both, so I often leave off the engagement ring.

Both rings are 9ct gold.

Wondered if anyone knows what causes it to flare and if anyone has any treatment recommendations.

Pic attached! All advice/thoughts much appreciated!

x

I got this when I was pregnant and my rings were too tight so moisture got trapped underneath. I now always take my rings off and dry my hands and underneath the rings before popping back on. I also only use handcream when I not going to put my rings back on for a while

Interesting because I’m quite obsessive about hand cream - I’ll try not using so much or letting it absorb properly before I put the rings back on. Thanks!

I used to get that but it was with a silver ring, and it was if I got orange juice around it.

you say that like it’s a common occurrence…

I got this from mine and realised soap product was getting in the grooves on the inside when I was my hands. Didn't wear my rings for a few days and soaked them both in dish soap, gave them a scrub with a toothbrush and I was fine after that x

This makes sense too as the engagement ring has a sort of gap do in trying this tomorrow! Thank you 🙏🏼

drying your hands is easy enough to try.
but the possibility is an allergy to the other metals.
As 9ct gold is made up of 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals.

My engagement ring is the same. Periodically it irritates me. Similar to the PP, I soak it for a bit and then clean in the gap, usually with a dental brush that fits inside. It seems to be a build up that once I remove, it is fine again for several months.

I stopped wearing mine in the shower and cleaned them with a tiny toothbrush. I think conditioner/shower oil traces etc were getting behind/between them. Sudocrem and not wearing them for a week healed my finger

I discovered the liquid soap at work was the culprit when this happened to me. I noticed when it cleared up after I had a fortnights leave!

I bring my own in an old hand sanitiser bottle now and dry my hands thoroughly and it has reoccurred.

I had this terribly at one point, I think it cured itself when I went on roaccutane for acne oddly. But now I'm always really careful to take it off regularly, I only wear it during the day, and take it off when I'm going to wash my hands, cook etc I used to wear it all the time and I feel the water might have aggravated it. I've not had an issue in years and I haven't had it recoated in over a decade (white gold). I'm always really susceptible to things like this, I have to switch the wrist my Apple Watch is on frequently as it gets aggravated.

Contact dermatitis. Clean the rings to remove any soap residue etc and rinse/ dry thoroughly each time you wash your hands. A hydrocortisone cream will heal it up if it is painful.

A jeweller said exactly this when I asked him about it.

BrieHugger · 04/12/2024 22:31

I’ve had this with my platinum rings, having worn them constantly for almost 20 years. It’s taken well over a year to fully heal (by rarely wearing them). It’s made me feel a bit sad really, I love my rings!

A jeweller and a doctor both said it’s very rare to react to platinum, so I’ve no idea what’s gone wrong.
