As a fun gift for a teen to encourage them to take driving lessons ! I know they are tacky but I think they are fun.

Any reputable sites please?

my husband bought me a personal plate as a surprise gift for Christmas a couple of years ago, it’s still my favourite present!

DreamW3aver · 03/12/2024 19:56

If the reg you want is available from the DVLA then don't even think about buying it from anywhere else

Willowback · 03/12/2024 20:00

My dh got one from his parents for his 21st birthday he's coming up on 50 and still has it, it's been on all our cars and makes it so easy to remember the reg.

DonaldJohnTrump · 03/12/2024 20:00

I just gotten given TW1AT but don't understand it. It ain't even my initials or nothing.

(Elon got it for me.)

Shade17 · 03/12/2024 20:12

I’ve bought and sold with Regtransfers before, no issues.

wouldyouratherdo · 03/12/2024 20:23

Thank you very much for these responses - I had no idea to go through the DVLA but looks like I can get a suitable one for £399 (plus then the cost of the actual plate) , many thanks

You might think they are fun....what about your teen? They are the one driving round with it on their car.

wouldyouratherdo · 03/12/2024 20:30

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky - that's the point that the teen finds it fun..

Bear in mind that when you change the car, you pay to put the plate on retention, so you can then assign it to the next car. Having said that, I had mine from 2001 to this year and loved it.

SleepingisanArt · 03/12/2024 20:35

My teen (now adult) was given one and it was a pain when they changed their car. It was going to cost to transfer it to the new car plus there was a fee to pay when it was removed from one car before being put on the next! So they sold it, got a bit of cash and saved the hassle.

Soscold · 03/12/2024 20:35

I’m not a fan but me ex bought our son one for his 21st. He’s got a very unusual name and it’s very cool, I admit

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/12/2024 20:41

Tell your teen that having a personalised or unusual number plate makes their car much easier to remember if they do something dodgy .

"It was a blue Ford Fiesta , dark blue but I cannot remember much more"
or
"It was a dark blue Ford , hatchback with the reg D-E-7-L something, like DellBoy"

Not sure why anyone would want their young adult child to be easily identifiable on the road.

Fullofpudding · 03/12/2024 21:01

Do they actually want it. I thought I would do the same for my DS and when I mentioned about it he was horrified at the thought.

I was given one and a gift and swapping it from one car to another was very straightforward. It cost £80 and the dealer sorted everything for me.

My DC would not like a personalised no. plate
I have negative vibes when I see them

I don't have one but my siblings do and often talk about the ones they might buy, what negative connotations would you be as as ascribing to them?

tazzzzzzz · 04/12/2024 08:52

Elite registrations are good

Quite. All the teens I know would be cringing
Yes OP, they are tacky - strictly for the tacky

akkakk · 04/12/2024 09:28

Cost is

  • the plate cost
  • £80 to assign to a car
  • £80 each time you remove it / re-assign it (when you change cars) + the cost of new number plates
  • moving it is very easy - done online and takes seconds

Are they tacky - yes they can be anything which uses a number to pretend to be a letter, or where you try and spell a word and someone has to ask what it means is probably a bit tacky - but something that simply is personal to the recipient, why not...

And they can be a huge investment if you buy dateless ones (60s and earlier) which are either 1-3 numbers then 1-3 letters or the other way around - the fewer characters, the more expensive they can be - up to 100s of thousands...

I have several and some of them have gone up in value 6-800% since buying them... they are also very easy to remember when entering the reg. in a car park!

Inezz · 04/12/2024 09:38

I'd check with your teen first - personalised number plates are seen as cringe and embarrassing by my teens and their mates.

Instant knob head territory 😂

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/12/2024 09:42

I think they are a tad pretentious. My dp has one, he keeps offering to get me one. He better not 😂

Worldgonecrazy · 04/12/2024 09:46

bought one for my daughter as it came up as one I had my eye on came up on DVLA. When she learns to drive we will transfer to her.
