Can you really make good money on Vinted?

I'm looking to earn some extra income to top up my earnings, especially because I live alone and so there's just one wage coming in.
I've started buying a few things on Vinted, and I'm wondering if it can be worthwhile trying to sell my own items on a regular basis and make a decent profit?

Do any of you buy items purely just to re sell on Vinted? and is it worth your while? Thanks

Ime people want a bargain on Vinted. You could be dealing with volume in order to make meaningful money and then there's dealing with queries and offers and keeping track of deliveries.

tediber · 03/12/2024 08:04

If u have lots to sell then yes. Mine is a never ending clear out. Mainly the kids stuff they've outgrown or no longer want.

I prefer eBay I think u can make more money on there. Also no fees. I find u have to price really low to sell on vinted.

My 90 day selling total is nearly £1100 just now. It does include an old phone I sold at £175.

It is quite time consuming though taking the pics, checking for flaws, writing descriptions and uploading. Then packaging up and I print my own labels. I get Royalmail to collect from my house for free.

I think the people who make real money on Vinted buy from charity shops and then re-sell. Things don’t go for as much as you would expect. I have sold quite a few items of my own on Vinted but it is just extra money. It all adds up but not to a fortune. Also, it’s hard to know what will sell. Yes, my brand new thermal vests went as I posted them in November but while the green evening bag has sold, a similar one in purple has not.

Thanks all for replying, I'll give it a whirl and who knows! 🙂

Not really.

On auction sites you can sell stuff you have bought that is not being used. But the better thing to do would be to just not buy the stuff in the first place and "make" money that way.

Auction sites are full of people looking for a bargain and as a result they are going to try to pay bottom dollar for everything. If they weren't interested in getting stuff as cheap as possible then they probably wouldn't be on them in the first place.

Lemonade2011 · 03/12/2024 11:47

If I hadn’t have bought ‘the stuff’ kids would have had no toys and we’d all be naked. The odd few things I thought might be useful and weren’t. Hardly over loaded with stuff but better to sell on than throw away I’d have thought. Just took a bag of too small school uniform and jackets to the clothing bins. A lot of the clothes my kids (I have 4) wore was their older brothers, so plenty of things were well used, those went to charity as still wear in them. Some has been binned.

TrippTover · 03/12/2024 11:50

Lots of people seem to buy my lovely quality toys and baby carriers, that I want to go on to a nice home, via some kind of auto-buy program as they are snapped up within seconds. Then when you go on the buyer’s page, they have about 50 baby carrier up for sale, so clearly they don’t need mine and it will be up on their page for way more than I sold it for (£20 vs £60 for example) in a couple of days.

So yeah I guess if you can set up some auto buy thing you can make good money with little effort! Bit sad though!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 03/12/2024 11:54

I think it depends where you're getting the clothes to resell tbh. Eventually you'll run out of your clothes to list - and then what? Clothes on Vinted go cheaper than even charity shop prices most of the time!

I only sell to clear out/top up my own Vinted pot for purchases, but I find unless you're listing at a rock bottom price it just sits on the site for ages.

Shizzlestix · 03/12/2024 11:56

I’ve made a few hundred this year selling too big clothes. Shoes and jackets sell quickly, I find, as do jumpers. I have a few things stuck for sale, but probably they’re not right for the season, dress, jumpsuit etc. I have items on there and eBay. It’s been fab for buying an entire new wardrobe but I’m addicted 🙈 Most of my outfits are from Vinted. I’m now reluctant to buy anything full price, jeans tend to be £3.50, tops are from £1, so even Primark seems expensive!

spanieleyes22 · 03/12/2024 12:02

When I first started on vinted what happened was a couple of items sold and then they all sat there. Recently though I read that if you just put up one item a day things will go more quickly. And it's working! I sold a coat yesterday that I had just about given up on and was thinking of taking it to the charity shop. I find if you take nice photos - I've just ironed everything 🙈with a clear background and put # in the post things do sell. I'm addicted to selling stuff now but am running out. I suppose I buy things too and sometimes they don't suit or whatever so I repost them . It's not exactly a money making thing more extra money: but it's lovely to have a bit of spare cash or to use the money to buy new outfits !

FanofLeaves · 03/12/2024 12:03

Last year when I was between jobs I did make a fair bit, but I had lots of time to dedicate to listing, packing d answering queries etc etc.

I thought I might come back to it this year to make a bit of extra money for Christmas but it’s so slow going. The effort involved is in no way worth the few quid I occasionally make. Nice items

FanofLeaves · 03/12/2024 12:16

*sorry- should go on to say nice items like baby sleeping bags and baby coats etc- people want them for a song. As they were my son’s lovely things I feel a bit sad letting them go for £1-2 and I’d rather put them in the charity shop or find them away for free. People don’t feel like they’re getting a bargain much if they are paying £2 or so with postage on top.

TokyoSushi · 03/12/2024 12:21

I've made just over £2K in 18 months or so, literally selling my own stuff. Branded items are definitely better, and sightly more expensive things rather than tops for £2. I had x4 Christmas events this weekend and was a bit short of cash, so managed to magic up about £30 from a quick whizz through my drawers on Saturday morning. It's handy for a few ££££ here and there.

1AnotherOne · 03/12/2024 12:22

I’ve made over £5k in nearly 2 years. I haven’t bought anything to resell. It’s all just stuff I buy and wear once or twice or new with tags mostly. I’m a serial shopper

FionaSkates · 03/12/2024 12:36

More money on eBay using the ‘buy it now’ option. On Vinted people just want to haggle you down to nothing.

mondaytosunday · 03/12/2024 12:38

My DD buys on Vinted. She's loathe to spend more than £10 and that includes shipping! She's has bought a fantastic ball dress fur £25 (most she's ever idos), jackets fur £20, multiple skirts for £5, a few boots fur £5-10 etc. She is after a certain look and everything must be in really good condition. She will always offer below ask in the first instance.
So not sure how much of one's own time they need to put in to photography (and people are crap at this part), description, uploading, answering questions and finally wrapping and shipping - it's the same amount of time whether it's a £2 item or £200.
But if you do please: photograph whole garment and size label, photograph any flaws, measure length of skirt/dress/jacket. Also helpful to mention if the fit runs large. My DD did buy a size 16 coat which said 'would fit a 12', which is what she is. It swamped her. Not helpful.

HangryBeaker · 03/12/2024 13:17

You haven't "made" any money if you sold something you haven't worn for less than you paid for it!!! Just pointing that out to some of the PP here.

I love to shop on Vinted but I give stuff away at the other side. Eases my conscience, costs way less overall, same end result financially for less effort.

Wurlywurly · 03/12/2024 13:19

Don't you have to pay fees to sell on Ebay?

FanofLeaves · 03/12/2024 13:26

Don't you have to pay fees to sell on Ebay?

Pretty sure they abolished it for secondhand clothes in an effort to compete with Vinted. I do find the upload process far easier on Vinted.

Not anymore

Wurlywurly · 03/12/2024 13:54

Oh thanks I didn't know that. Going to sort out my wardrobe!

Chocolateteabag · 03/12/2024 14:07

I'd just be careful to keep under the £1000 threshold per tax year (6 April to 5 April) - that's Sales/Turnover (not profit) if you buy things specifically to sell on

Otherwise you may get HMRC knocking to ask if you shouldn't be declaring it for tax purposes

Vinted and eBay have all our details of sales etc which they could be requested to report to HMRC

HMRC guidance

Essentially you are ok to sell your personal stuff if it's under £6k (one item or a set)
And it's not something that has appreciated in value (like artwork)

That's what I was thinking, after I've ran out of my own personal things to sell, I was thinking of buying things just to sell on. Although, like you say, charity shops are quite expensive now days!

Kinda reminds me of the quote 'The only way to become a millionaire through horse racing is to start out a multi millionaire '.

You can make a grand on Vinted by buying 5 grand of stuff in shops and selling it on Vinted.
