How much hair do you lose (picture)?

This is what comes off my hairbrush when I brush my hair through after I've washed it. I use a 'Wet Brush' which is meant to be more gentle.
Does this look excessive??
It's not a new thing but I sometimes worry how on earth my head can replenish it all...

It'll look worse if your hair is long. Mine is below my bra strap at the mo so it looks like loads in my brush! I'm starting to think I have a big shed every year in the autumn because it always seems to go fine around now. It generally thickens up again so I'm trying not to worry. Menopause and stress/losing a parent really made it fall out though. But it did come back eventually. Can you see any 'baby hair' around your temples or feel bristley 'action man hair' on your scalp? I always find that reassuring. Plus you could try supplements- I take daily collagen which has really helped.

HowMuchHair · 02/12/2024 11:45

I have lots of 'baby hairs' around my forehead but can't feel anything else on my head!
Hair is just past shoulder length so not that long 😐
Thanks for the collagen tip!

You've no idea how reassuring your words are to me today @CheerfulBunny. And thanks to you @HowMuchHair for starting the thread.
I've been losing tons of hair and been so worried to the point of tears. I'm scared to wash my hair now because so much comes out on the brush afterwards (am really gentle with brushing).
I always notice more falling out in autumn but it's been so much more this year. I'm menopause age with hair just below bra strap so I know the length makes it look more on the brush. But I'm terrified it's just not going to stop.
Thanks for the collagen tip.

I lose a lot more. But I'm on mounjaro

NovemberMorn · 02/12/2024 12:11

I have always had really thick hair, and didn't notice excessive loss when washing, combing etc.
Now, as I have aged, the amount I lose is alarming, I have even asked hairdressers over the last couple of years if they can see any thinning patches, because like you, I worry how one head of hair can replenish itself so quickly.
So far, they assure me I don't.

I can really empathise with your worry though.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/12/2024 12:13

I’m suffering from hair loss at the moment (I’m perimenopausal which is probably connected)

I lose WAY more than that per day over the last 2 years or so. Ny hair is not as thick as it was, but no noticeable thinning at the scalp (well to anyone but me) yet.!

autumn1610 · 02/12/2024 12:15

I loose way more than that. Had my hormones checked a few times but totally fine

KatyN · 02/12/2024 12:17

I block the plug everytime I wash my hair. I have a chin length bob so it's not even long.

Perimenopause I reckon because the only time I had it before was post pregnancy

Kokomjolk · 02/12/2024 12:17

Haha way more than that, and my hair is quite short and I am nowhere near the menopause.

But I have always had very thick hair and shed a lot. If it's normal for you I wouldn't be worried. There's a lot of natural variation between individuals I think.

ShootyBumPain · 02/12/2024 12:20

That looks like a really normal amount to me. I'm always surprised to still see hair on my head after my shower with the amount that bunches up in the drain cover (and in my butt crack!?). I do regularly have low iron though.

DatingDinosaur · 02/12/2024 12:27

Another plughole blocker here. I've been like this all my life and, by rights, I should be bald with the amount that washes and brushes out, but I'm not. Can't blame menopause because it's been like it all my life, even before periods. It's my normal.

But OP, if this is new to you, happened suddenly, can't explain it with hormones or stress then it might be worth getting your thyroid and iron levels checked.

CheerfulBunny · 02/12/2024 12:48

So sorry to hear that @Heyjoni I know how upsetting it is. For a while I didn't even want to touch my hair, it felt so thin. It gave me the creeps! It's fine anyway but did go very thin for a bit. It took maybe six months of being very religious with the collagen, having the drink every single day to really see an improvement. I also tried rosemary oil in my shampoo and thickening sprays made it look thicker and gave it more body. I felt I looked better, even though they make it sticky. The argan oil one is good and smells incredible. I do hope you get sorted out soon xx

Stirrednshaken · 02/12/2024 12:49

I'd say I lose about four times that, plus whatever comes out during the washing itself. My hair doesn't seem patchy though

caringcarer · 02/12/2024 12:50

I lose about 3 X as much as that.

TheChosenTwo · 02/12/2024 12:53

I lose a lot of hair every time I brush it, a lot more than is in your brush, but I don’t brush it often (pretty curly hair, shouldn’t brush it really, mostly so do it when wet and I’m going to style it but 90% of the time I don’t brush it and let it air dry).
Dh is forever cursing my hair washes though as I lose a lot of hair then and it does block the plug hole!

Ivegotteabags · 02/12/2024 12:54

I read somewhere it’s an average of 100 hairs per day

ThirdStorm · 02/12/2024 13:15

I lose quite a lot more than that and more when I'm washing it. 2 months ago I started taking collagen (5g in my coffee, ancient and brave bovine) and I think its started to reduce a bit thankfully.

Yes! I've been scared to even touch it. I'm used to leaving a trail of hair around the house (DH moans it gets stuck to his socks) but it's definitely shedding a lot more.
I've been tearful about it and am normally quite a robust person when it comes to health/ageing but this has really got to me. So much so that I even had a dream about it, except DH was the one with a big bald patch in the dream. Talk about projection!
I don't want to go to the doctor (if I could even get an appointment) because I know they'll take one look at me as a woman of a certain age and dismiss my concerns.
The weird thing is I have hardly any grey for my age but it's just got really thin.
I am going to try all the things you've suggested, can't thank you enough for those and just knowing I'm not alone.

Fluffyc1ouds · 02/12/2024 13:41

I lose loads more in the shower and when brushing, it's amazing how I have so much hair on my head! A full handful of hair comes out every time I wash it but I always thought that's normal.

HowMuchHair · 02/12/2024 14:23

I'm glad I started this thread! I'm so sorry for other women who have this worry and grateful for the reassurance.

Mine has been shedding for a while, and it's not the first time. I know what caused this episode though and it's the same as a previous episode. It usually rights itself but while it's happening, is very distressing.

For me, HRT and, vaginal estrogen makes my hair fall out. I took the plunge and tried the estrogen cream several weeks ago and yes, it happened again.

In the last few years I’ve lost my elderly mum and dad. Divorced my husband having had no choice. Moved home and changed jobs twice.

My once long lustrous hair is now really thin and lacklustre. All I can do is treat it gently and hope.

I think your hair brush amount of hair is not excessive. Try not to worry.

JohnTheRevelator · 02/12/2024 18:24

Looks pretty normal to me,about the same as I get. How long is your hair? Mine is quite long, about halfway down my back.
