How do you decorate for Xmas??

Growing up for me (90s / 00s) it was all about the tinsel and 89p foil decs hanging from corner to corner of the ceiling, tree in the corner obvs.

Now I'm a 'grown up' (allegedly) I never know what's fashionable in the world of Xmas decorations. I've noticed that you can barely buy the foil ones any more so how else do people decorate?

We'll do the tree of course, I have a nice little light up garland for the mantlepiece... I need some inspiration for what else! I've got 2 little ones (4 & 6) so I want it to feel Christmassy for them without it feeling too OTT / cluttered for us, and also without spending a fortune!

So please share yours! Bonus points for pics 😂 thanks!

We have the tree (obvs) and a garland on the mantelpiece.

I also make a wreath out of foliage from the garden each year (very easy to do if you're happy to just shove cuttings into wet oasis foam). That goes on the front door.

And I wind tinsel up the banister of the stairs because I just love it! Not classy at all but I don't care.

Also we always have lights on the outside of the house. Just a few around the bushes outside the front door but enough to feel festive.

Real tree, garland on the mantelpiece, a few decorative items here and there e.g soft toys for DD’s bed and sofa, pretty Christmassy ornaments for the bookcase, lights for outside and living room window, plus lights for the windowsill and Christmassy door mat.
I don’t follow fashion in clothes as such ( wide legged trousers and oversized cropped jumpers look horrible on me) so it never occurred to me to follow fashion in Christmas decorations.

I CBA so delegate to the kids, they love all the traditional stuff that was on the tree 25 years ago and still is now. We have beams in our lounge so they amuse themselves to filling with Christmas cards (and imagining the next buyers worrying about the woodworm holes, and we have a fake garland goes over the fireplace that's so thin (must be 40 years old as had it at last house), so they put that up then scavenge stuff from the garden to fill it out/decorate it with.

Oh yes, I love putting Christmas cards on the mantelpiece but it’s a dying tradition 😢
We also have small artificial Christmas tree for DD’s room but she doesn’t put it up every year, which is strange for me, I loved having one in my bedroom as a child/ teen/ young adult .

MooChops89 · 01/12/2024 15:10

I suppose I'm not bothered about myself being fashionable (as I'm really not 😆), more that you can't seem to buy the type of decs I remember so I wondered what people do now instead

Real tree, real wreath on front door, holly and other greenery picked locally and hung on internal doors downstairs, lights on mantel pieces with a few large baubles, external lights just outside front door, candles.

When my DS was small we had a small tree but he chose the decorations each year and I also bought one special one for him to add to our collection. As he got older we had a big tree that used to take hours to put up but he loved helping.

When he stopped helping I had a minimalist tree for a few years that was easy to put up. One year I bought a small real one because I'd always wanted a real one that grew as he grew up. But the DCs wouldn't let it back in.

Now I put up some lights and I've got a couple of table based things with some candles. I had thought this year to have another tree but I'm pushing it with just getting the lounge sorted out.

My parents had the lounge covered in decorations on the ceiling, around picture frames, the tree. Each year my DF would curse at them!

Marsaala · 01/12/2024 15:17

We don't.

Doggymummar · 01/12/2024 15:19

@MooChops89 window decals from dizzy duck designs

MogTheSillyCat · 01/12/2024 17:54

We have quite a big Christmas tree, which is full to the brim with tree decs.
Garlands entwined with warm white fairly lights, they go up the living room, dining room, hallway and round the bannister up the stairs. That’s probably the biggest job, but it looks beautiful.
We have a few paper stars hanging from the ceilings in the dining room
There’s a few Christmassy ornaments on the mantelpiece and a few wooden mini Christmas trees in the kitchen window.
Fairy lights in the playroom and cute window stickers of snowmen, snowflakes and reindeer. The Christmas snow globes come out every year too 😁

GameOfJones · 01/12/2024 19:54

@MogTheSillyCat you reminded me that DDs have snow globes on their bedroom window sills. I have bought them a new one each year since they were born so they've got quite a little collection now.

Potentiallyplausible · 01/12/2024 20:15

First time ever, I’ve got an artificial tree with lights this year and not a real tree. It won’t go up till the 24th, though. A few hanging decorations and figures which hang on front windows or go on mantelpiece. A wreath for front door. But nothing up yet.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2024 20:32

Real tree, a few nice looking fake greenery garlands round the banisters etc. and 2 of these long robin garlands (from Past Times ages ago) on walls in the hall and sitting room. (Not up yet.)
Our carpet looks horrible in the pic - it’s actually a nice green!

Potted tree went outside the front door today, plus real wreath on the door, and candle bridge in the front window.

hby9628 · 01/12/2024 20:35

Similar to yours really, tree, fireplace garland, door wreath & outdoor lights. I would like a garland on the stairs this year too. We also have some Xmas gonks that come out too.

hby9628 · 01/12/2024 20:36

Oh also Christmas duvet covers for the beds.

MooChops89 · 01/12/2024 20:45

Sounds like you all do something pretty similar. We also have a wreath for the door that I forgot about, and we don't have a banister so can't put anything up the stairs.

Maybe I've been spoiled by the tinsel explosions of my childhood 😂 I just always feel like I've not done 'enough' in comparison!

I've found a tutorial for 3d paper snowflakes, might do that with the kids and dangle them from the ceiling as a compromise 😂

I have a tree with silver and glass baubles with white lights in the sitting room. A multicoloured one in the dining end of the kitchen with stuff the kids made over the years on it. Fake greenery up the bannisters and same for mantlepiece. Wooden nativity set on the hall windowsill and the porch has decorated fake greenery plus I have little olive trees in the porch that I put white lights on. I make a wreath for the door and make a green decoration for the table. I put Christmas cards along the top of pictures and have them draped round the hall.

Ilovemyshed · 01/12/2024 20:55

Tree in the living room, tree in the bedroom, small tree on my desk. Garlands down the stairs, wreath on the door and then lots of (tasteful) bits dotted around the house. There isn't any room I don't decorate with some festive foliage.

popandchoc · 01/12/2024 20:59

I have a few nutcrackers which go on unit under tv and also window sills. Also a countdown to Christmas thing and some snow globes. A light up wreath on the living room door. Also some lights going up the stair rail and some curtain lights across the back patio door.

Beansandneedles · 01/12/2024 21:02

Have tried having greenery going up my stairs but the needle/leaf drop was too annoying so I've wrapped fairy lights up the bannister instead and hung little decorations off them which works nicely. The stockings will go here too later as I don't have a fireplace. Otherwise I just put a few bits and bobs out. I like lights and wooden decorations, get a lot from a guy called Gordy on the isle of wight.

@christmascheesecake ^ photos!

marginallyawake · 01/12/2024 21:09

Outdoor lights and a real tree, both going up around the 23rd or 24th.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 01/12/2024 21:09

My house is like santa's workshop if all santa's elves have noro and are vomiting and shitting glitter everywhere.

Main tree, several mini trees, garland over the mantlepiece, lights all round the coving and in the hallway and up the stairs. Huge wreath on the front door. Another garland on the wall at the other side of the living room. big wicker stars with red berries. a llama ornament with gifts on its back, snowmen. a choir decoration that belonged to my grandma, you wind it up and it sings carols and has a candle. A full manger scene that belonged to my great grandma. a set of bottle lights and some twiggy shit.
and probably some other stuff I've forgotten.
oh yes, a big snowman with a snowglobe and when you tap it the snowglobe activates, it lights up, whirls white shit about and sings. A felt caterpillar with pockets to put advent treats in. another garland that twists up the stairs.
lights lights and more lights .
3 Stockings over the fireplace, 2 for my sons and one for my cat.

And a ridiculous amount of Christmas crackers that I pin to the wall, put on the tree and make a little pyramid out of.

I don't do subtle :D

EveryDayisFriday · 01/12/2024 21:13

Our tree is full of decorations from holidays and trips we've been on. Love getting the memories out every year. We have a small tree in the playroom that the kids can decorate with the crappy 20yr old baubles we have.

A garland for the mantel, candles and light up little houses on tables and shelves. I used to hate tinsel but I love it now, big fluffy iridescent silver and white tinsel on the windowsills and sideboards, it adds some festive sparkle to the surfaces.
