Penalised for not showing up to a meeting

I asked for a meeting about reasonable adjustments but they had no record of it from the first time I asked because it wasn’t in writing. Then when I did ask for it in writing they still didn’t arrange a meeting with the relevant department but expected me to turn up to a meeting with them to speak about it, as if they had any power to change or implement anything.
then I was penalised for missing that meeting due a storm in my area.
they were 2 hours away and they were unaffected.
One their reasons for penalising me was that it was odd that there wasn’t one in the morning but there was at the time of my meeting, which implied I had made it up.
I was able to prove there was a storm and had the penalisation lifted by their manager.
They themselves in the past have told me about how have given others no penalisation for not turning up to meetings or getting there and deciding they don’t have the energy for it or whatever. Their manager also said they were never aware I had asked for a meeting about reasonable adjustments and have given me one for Monday. I am disabled, make a big effort to be prepared for everything and I go to meetings even if I don’t feel like it and only don’t go if I can’t due to a storm etc or in unbearable pain and can’t function at all. So far I have missed 2 meetings one of which was due to the storm.
I’m not sure I trust them anymore and I’m not sure what to do from here.

Who is “they”, the context of your post isn’t very clear.

barbarahunter · 01/12/2024 10:06

Don't go into the meeting alone, are you in a union?

Littletreefrog · 01/12/2024 10:07

What does the penalty look like? I can't work out how that works in an employment situation.

How do multiple people have no recollection that you asked for a meeting? It sounds like a whole leadership team have ignored you so you’ve gone above them to their manager? That sounds like a really chaotic workplace with a whole leadership team who want to ignore you. You can raise a grievance about that.

Changingplace · 01/12/2024 10:08

Did you let them know you couldn’t get to the meeting? Couldn’t it have been held on zoom/Teams in any case, why didn’t it need to be in person?

Who was the meeting with? Your manager, HR?

I had no signal to tell them anything

You couldn’t send an email? Use a landline to call? What storm was there recently that made all phone lines, mobile lines and internet go down?
You just didn’t turn up?

If the electricity goes in your area you'd have no internet or mobile coverage.
Who has a landline anymore?

I am in Scotland I don’t want to give more information about where I am than that, it took out my WiFi and signal and also my power at one point

they gave me a formal warning and if I get 3 I can’t work with them anymore

I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re complaining about. You had a meeting arranged with someone to discuss reasonable adjustments, there was a storm, you didn’t show up nor did you let them know that you couldn’t make it. you were penalised, but this was rescinded. Now you have a meeting on Monday. What’s the problem?

JJLA · 01/12/2024 10:18

Who is they? This is really relevant as you say work “with” them not “for” them suggesting you’re not an employee?

Many landlines no longer work if there is a power cut anyway. As my very elderly mother discovered last weekend!

Clearly you haven’t visited the rural parts of Scotland…

My in laws only have a landline phone. No mobile phone signal at all, and WiFi that works intermittently throughout the day.

Oops that was for @Onthesideofthespiders

This. Once they were informed of the reasons you didn't attend and didn't contact them they removed the penalty. All the other stuff is just noise. Nothing has actually happened in the end and you have a new date for your meeting. Go to the new meeting with a clear head and no hang ups about the rest and state your case.

I live in rural Scotland. Landlines work in a power cut, unless the phone lines come down. People who live rurally keep their phone lines for that reason. The digital style phone handsets or cordless phones don’t work; you need just a plain old phone which plugs straight into your phone line and doesn’t need to be plugged into a socket as well.
Phone lines work regardless of electricity unless the physical phone lines are taken down. No phones lines were taken down by storm Bert.

MMOC · 01/12/2024 10:31

They gave you a formal warning for not attending a meeting about reasonable adjustments that you requested?
Sounds very harsh to penalise you for missing two appointments. Have you received any verbal warnings prior to this? Or any other disciplinary action for past misconduct?
Do they have any disciplinary guidance in place you could refer to?

Ha I love how my comment re rural Scotland backfired there!

JFDIYOLO · 01/12/2024 10:34

Everything in writing.

Keep records of everything you request and their response.

Write your own notes of every meeting, all agreements and actions, and share them to all concerned.

Speak to your union and your EDI rep.

Be able to quote the Equality Act.

Collect evidence of the severe weather and loss of connections that meant you couldn't get in contact or attend due to factors outside your control.

Maybe some advice from a solicitor could be helpful.

What type of phone does your mum have plugged into her landline? Is it one of those phones with a cordless handset and/or that also plugs into a power socket to work? Or is it an old type of phone which doesn’t require any power and just plugs into the landline outlet?

Landlines do not require electricity to work (this was literally my job in uni). The only thing that might require electricity is the actual phone. Which is why, in rural places, you keep an old cord phone which doesn’t require a power outlet and only needs the landline.

Phone lines can go down if the actual lines are brought down by winds or falling trees. Neither of those things happened during storm Bert.

Sorry I think I misread something somewhere. So they haven't removed the penalty? I would definitely dispute this.

My issue is I think they just have it in for me because they’ve not given warnings to anyone else who’s gone to a meeting and decided they don’t feel like it or if they don’t show up just because they don’t feel like it. Even though I got the penalisation lifted by their manager I’m wondering what they’ll do next to penalise me or make things difficult for me
