Best film version of A Christmas Carol?

DD (14) and I are going to see a ballet of A Christmas Carol just before Christmas. She doesn’t know the story. I only know it from the Bill Murray film Scrooged, and general cultural osmosis - I’ve never read it.

What would you say is the best film to watch so that she fully understands what’s happening on stage? Neither of us have seen A Muppet Christmas Carol but I’m told it’s not a straight re-telling just with muppets, and might not be the best representation 😂

The Muppets. Seriously.

Not only is it a truly wonderful movie, but I gather it's actually the one that's closest to the book.

jollygreenpea · 01/12/2024 08:53

If you want the true story, then you need to read the book.
I love Alistair Sims version, not because of the story but I just love old black and white films.

Absolutely The Muppets!

The muppets.

Yy to it being closest to the book

Womblewife · 01/12/2024 08:55

Alistair simms old movie is timeless

VladsPants · 01/12/2024 08:55

They’re all brilliant. Muppets is my favourite. It’s not inaccurate and a lovely watch!

OolongTeaDrinker · 01/12/2024 08:55

The Patrick Stewart version is perfection. But also agree the Muppets Christmas Carol is pretty awesome too.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 01/12/2024 08:56

The ballet is really good at telling the story, so you'll be able to follow it easily.

Just give her a synopsis - lonely horrible miserly old man gets visited by three ghosts who show him the consequences of his actions, and he gets a chance to change.

Have fun!

Changeyourfuckingcar · 01/12/2024 08:56

It’s the Muppets, no debate.

Jb2182 · 01/12/2024 08:57

The Disney animated version with Jim Carrey doing the voices is brilliant. My 4 year old loves it!

lemonyellows · 01/12/2024 08:57

I love the musical version with Albert Finney. Watch it every year.

MarvelJesus · 01/12/2024 08:57

Why not give her a copy of the book, or better, get one for each of you? It would take very little time to read (less than a couple of hours) and at 14 she is more than old enough for it! I have a hand-sized copy printed in the 1910s which I reread every Christmas, and have since I was 10.

rabblenotrebel · 01/12/2024 08:58

Muppets. Honestly.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/12/2024 09:01

The Muppets is best, obvs, but not the same as the book. There's a film with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge which is pretty faithful adaptation. Definitely recommend the book though.

Screamingabdabz · 01/12/2024 09:03

My dd lazily watched the muppets instead of reading the book for school and her teacher made a comment on her essay something like ‘you clearly know the text well.’

Hekii · 01/12/2024 09:08

Looks like Muppets is a must watch regardless of accuracy 😀

I’m intrigued by the Patrick Stewart version but it doesn’t seem to be available.

I’ll try with the book, but she’s not the most enthusiastic of readers. I guess I should give it a go myself too…

The Muppets.
Apart from Marley and Marley, it’s pretty accurate and just a joyful watch.
Michael Caine clearly took it just as seriously as any other job and it really shows.

Bananaram · 01/12/2024 09:11

The Muppets

(I have not seen any other adaptation but The Muppets Christmas Carol is the best Christmas film in the world and I will not argue on this)

lemonyellows · 01/12/2024 09:11

This is often included in GCSE English so worth getting her a head start. But they all hate it when they have to study it unfortunately.

Hazeby · 01/12/2024 09:12

Of course The Muppets. Has a lot of the text verbatim.

BarbaraHoward · 01/12/2024 09:14

OP I also can't believe you're old enough to have a teenager but still haven't seen the Muppets Christmas Carol! Where have you been. YABU for that alone. Grin

AnImaginaryCat · 01/12/2024 09:15

The Muppets' Christmas Catol is by far the best

Wherever told you that "facf" about the Muppets i want you never to speak to them again. Or at the very least never trust a word they way. The monster.

frozendaisy · 01/12/2024 09:16

Another Muppets totally

This is our last Christmas film we watch Christmas eve.
