Hanging wreath on composite door

lotsofthingstolearn · 30/11/2024 07:14

Went to a wreath making class (really enjoyed) but didn't think through the logistics of how to hang said wreath on a composite door

Tried to look online and all sorts of variations thus am sure it's not just me that is puzzled with what works, what doesn't damage etc- thus asking MN crew

Magnetic hooks seem to be mentioned but genuinely overwhelmed when I look on Amazon!

It's a fairly big, real foliage etc, so need something that can withstand the weight

Have a feeling of dread that whilst the wreath making may have been great, I'm not going to be able to use it!

I put my wreaths on a long black shoelace, loop it over the top of the door and make a loop at the other end to hook over a little nut on the back of the door (I think it's the back of the knocker). Works perfectly. I used to use a metal wreath hanger that hooks over the door but it was quite visible and slid about when you opened and shut the door.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 30/11/2024 07:21

Upside down command hook on the inside and then a ribbon round the wreath, over the top of the door and hung over the hook.

I'm not home or I would load a picture

We have one of these from Amazon. Just hooks over the top of the door.

I use green gardening string to tie to door knocker

lotsofthingstolearn · 30/11/2024 07:24

These are useful, do they not damage the composite doors?

I've read the over door ones don't allow the doors to close, I don't have anything on the inside part of the door meaning I can't hook anything from the inside and I can't drill anything into it as it's composite! Then I've read the suction hooks can't withstand the weight

^ I have one of these too on a composite door.
No damage, only issue is it obscures our door number.

Newname101 · 30/11/2024 07:37

Watching with interest as dh and I just had the same conversation and we have a brand new door

Noodlesnotstrudels · 30/11/2024 07:37

We use the over door one that @user1474315215 linked and it has never stopped our composite door from closing.

Catsdogsfish · 30/11/2024 07:40

We use a big sucker hook and squash it onto the window on the door. Holds our wreath up.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 30/11/2024 07:41

We had one of the hooks and yes it did scratch our composite door quite badly when it was windy (was fine the rest of the time).

DoublePeonies · 30/11/2024 07:42

We have an upsidedown command hook stuck permanently to the inside of the door. It's clear and doesn't show much.
Wreath then hung with ribbon and hooked inside. Weight is fine.

TooManyNiblings · 30/11/2024 07:44

I have an internal hanging thing and I tie them together through the letter box with a shoelace. DM does the same with a fabric wreath on the inside.

(My 'thing' is dried oranges and cinnamon sticks and other stuff that I can't recall as it's still packed away! But it smells delicious!)

Manchesterbythesea · 30/11/2024 07:45

We just use an outdoor command hook to hold ours. They are bigger than the normal hooks and kind of a dark brown/black.

Rosesarere · 30/11/2024 07:46

I have a huge suction pad from home bargains. Stick on the door and not visible

We have no problem closing the door. You can get one for under a fiver, so worth a try?

Triflelife · 30/11/2024 07:48

bought a wreath holder but the door wouldn’t close with it on. Husband stapled a ribbon into the top edge of the door (the actual top not the front or back) and hang it from that. Has worked for years and withstood some fairly crazy storms.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 30/11/2024 07:58

I didn't want to make a hole in our door so attached the string holding the wreath to a small tote bag filled with a small sack of rice the same sort of weight as the wreath, so it balances over the top of the door. Seems to be holding up just fine.

And now I know why my front door has an upside down command hook on the inside. Mystery solved! Thank you!!!!

Whoops, that message was for Ihatelittlefriendsusan!

So do we. its not noticeable. We had to do this with a brand new door.

Soontobe60 · 30/11/2024 08:13

I also hang mine by putting 2 command hooks upside down on the inside of the door and looping a ribbon over the top of the door. The problem with those metal hanger things is that they can actually damage the door due to the thickness of them. The hooks stay on the door all year round, so I can put a spring and autumn wreath there.

Redglitter · 30/11/2024 08:13

I use a command hook designed for wreaths on front doors. Its brilliant. Holds the wreath in place no problem

Ours has an over door one like pictured by others. Door was new 2 xmas ago. No scratches, door closes fine. It is about as thick as a piece of card from a cereal box, really not an issue, but you could cut a bit, fold it over your door to check if it still closes.
We put a bit of bluetac on the bottom, rear of the wreath. Stops the wreath moving/scratching if it gets stormy.

Yes we do this. I bought an extra long piece of burlap type ribbon fabric for this purpose. It works well and I have a bow on the inside part of the door as well.

Same. Got the hook from the Christmas section at a garden centre. It holds up our real foliage wreaths fine.
