Ever had a movie/TV series set or filmed in your home town? Was it cringe or "Oh look, that's my house!"

My ex front door in my old flat has been filmed, fleetingly, on the French version of Come Dîne With Me as the historic building above the cheesemongers, and there is a TV series being filmed right now on location in my town depicting us all as mafia connected murderous types but in a tasteful and sort of Inspector Morse way, obviously. I live in Corsica.

I absolutely cringe whenever there is a depiction of where I live or have lived on the old telly screen and just want to shout, "Oh God, no! We're not all like that!"

Apart from the hand over mouth, mumble mumble well, sort of kind of like but...

Do you have experience of this phenomenon?

I started to watch a film the other night that featured the city where I used to live. A few minutes in I was a thinking, 'WTF? She's just gone the other way down that road, she CAN'T come out there!'

I gave it another 10 minutes but it was so hackneyed and predictable that I gave up.

A lot of Dr Who and related stuff filmed around dd's student rental in Bristol (along with other various films and tv shows).

Locally in the last few years we've had The Boat That Rocked (the cast took my favourite table in my favourite restaurant on my wedding anniversary and didn't even order food Angry), Bad Sisters, Broadchurch and, most excitingly, Harry Styles in town filming Dunkirk. Lots of dd's friends were all over that Grin.
Last year dd applied to be an extra, and was accepted, for Say Nothing, which has just come out. She got cold feet and didn't do it - but she would have been a prison visitor if she had.

Like @Garlicpest I was constantly annoyed by The Bill being filmed locally. Would get to the street corner and moan 'Not Reg Hollis again' Grin.

expandabandband · 30/11/2024 18:31

Our street was in Poldark - so I actually got Aidan Turner coming in through the front door several times. But DD (then about nine) was most excited by the fact that lots of the crew had worked on Dr Who. And we were used for Sanditon too.

Edited for spelling

We've had a few filmed on our estate.
The strangest was then they had an American film company, with American Actors and spent a couple of days making a particular street look like an American bus stop. Surely there could have been a cheaper/better way of doing that.

We had a fairly recent Netflix film done on the estate. It was fun watching them set it up, even though they refused to do our house in garish colours to match (I did ask!). There's one part in the film where they panned out and just stopped before our house, and some of the inside scenes could have been filmed in our house.
And they very kindly let me take some photos on condition that I didn't put it on social media before the film came out. I explained I wanted to send it to dd, who was at uni, and they were happy with that.

elliejjtiny · 30/11/2024 18:47

They filmed a programme about starting school on channel 5 at my old primary school. I think it was called big school.

They filmed a scene in a film called 3 wishes for Christmas in our local park and the dc got to be extras. They are on imdb as well.

The opening credits of The Office showed many of the places from my childhood in Slough (well, technically I lived in Windsor, but we went into Slough for the shops and cinema a lot!)

KnopkaPixie · 30/11/2024 20:35

I've been really intrigued by how many of you have been quite closely involved in film and TV productions. I never expected that there would be so many of your homes being used as sets or you lot being extras!

The Glasgow doubling for New York was truly an education until I googled for photos and thought, well yeah, I can see it now.

Thankyou everybody. I've read all the posts and given everybody a thankyou. It's brightened my day!

Rosie and Jim did 2 episodes in the place where I used to work. And 1 in the Sainsbury's I used to take my grandma to.

@Frith2013 I like this one the most out the whole thread

Nearly forgot that nearly all of The Box of Delights was filmed in 2 local towns.

scalt · 30/11/2024 20:43

I believe that the scene in "Love Actually" where Hugh Grant visits Martine McCutcheon at home was filmed in a part of south London very near where I grew up, and the residents were asked to put Christmas decorations up.

There was an episode of "Lee Evans, so what now" which was filmed in a similar area, where the duo are trying to deliver a sofa on a child's scooter, down a steep hill. The houses in the background are very distinctly from the area.

The Mr Bean sketch where he drives his car from an armchair on the roof, and ends up careering down a steep hill was in Forest Hill, south London; not far from where some of my family live now.

TheWittyBird · 30/11/2024 20:49

Outlander was filmed in Dean Castle just on my doorstep ( big vans were parked in the local school) daughter wanted to be a runner for them ( she did filming at University) but when I woke her she said NO it's raining and I don't do rain.😂
We also had The Scheme filmed but that really was tragic what the result was making fun of those on drugs.

My mum and dad used to live in a flat on Honor Oak Road in Forest Hill but that was in the '60's before I was born and they seemed to have had a love/hate relationship with an elderly couple called the Paternosters who lived downstairs.

What a wonderful name though. Paternoster.

Whenever I watch tv programmes that have houses, villages etc in the opening credits I always think that there must be families pointing out their house.

Someone I know was outside the U.K. during the London Olympics. They put on the coverage in the country they were in only to find their street and house were in the opening credits!

GrandTheftWalrus · 30/11/2024 22:54

Also a place where I work has been on tv. It's also in the eurovision film where it moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh!

StiggyZardust · 30/11/2024 23:00

My old house and street was in an episode of Top Boy.

That film is trippy to watch when you're familiar with both cities! None of the locations are where they are!

We used to live in Morecambe when they were filming The Bay. Although I thought the series was a bit rubbish, it was fun to spot local places (mostly that had been renamed or used for something other than what they are actually used for).

In the very first scene, the police officer goes behind a pub and shags a random man and I thought, yeah that’s pretty realistic 😂.

The actors who aren’t from Lancashire are pretty terrible at a Lancashire accent and it was also fun to spot inconsistencies in locations etc. for example, driving the wrong way down the prom when supposedly going to Carnforth. In one scene, the police drive from Morecambe, somehow end up in Blackpool and then reappear in Morecambe a few minutes later. One detective (I think) claims it’ll take half an hour to drive to Barrow (they could have easily got that right using Google maps!). Also, there was a harbour for fishing boats that doesn’t exist, in fact they definitely over egged the whole fishing industry in Morecambe.

DH once got stuck driving behind them when filming a driving scene and the car was actually on a flat bed truck with them pretending to drive! He looked out for himself but he didn’t feature 😂.

My Dad lives at Gillian's farm from Last Tango In Halifax and I grew up there. Farm is in Lancashire.
Also some small parts of After the Flood were filmed there.

My Dad was quite involved in the filming of LTIH and was like a consultant for when Gillian had to do any farming type scenes like dry stone walling, handling sheep and driving tractors. He was invited to wrap parties too.

He loved it and it made the house and surrounding countryside look beautiful.

changedusernameforthis1 · 01/12/2024 06:23

Yes, it was literally a 30 second walk from my house and a lot of the neighbours would huddle together across the road to watch them filming.
I can't remember what it was called, but it would have been very early 2004/late 2003 and was in Leeds.

One of my neighbours, also a friend from primary school, asked me out on one of the filming nights and I said yes. It felt so magical at the time (I was just turning 14) and we lasted quite a while together.
Threw a party bigger than the film crew when we divorced 😂😂😂
Hope you enjoyed my random waffling on there, it's a habit I'm trying to stop, I promise 😅

Simonjt · 01/12/2024 06:24

“car was actually on a flat bed truck with them pretending to drive!“

This is how all driving scenes are filmed that aren’t wide angle.

Rainbow321 · 01/12/2024 06:37

Live in Cumbria , and unsurprisingly quite a bit gets filmed here . Was walking in some woods near Derwent Water once and a lot was partitioned off with people about on quads , turned out it was filming for a Star Wars film . Also see streets I recognise and when people are driving , they don't always end up where they should .

steponacrackbreakyourmothersback · 30/11/2024 03:46

Only all hours was filmed here.

I've been to that "shop" and the town many, times. The closest town to where I live is Holmfirth, "Last of the Summer Wine" country (same writer as OAH), and also not far from some of the locations from
"League of Gentlemen".

I grew up in Central London though, so I am used to seeing my "haunts" on tv a lot and shouting "you can't do that" as someone chases a criminal from say, Covent Garden to Albert Bridge in 20 s without passing through any of the in between bits. The video to Status Quo's "The Wanderer" was filmed in my school playground one break time.

BestZebbie · 01/12/2024 08:52

Hot Fuzz was filmed in the town where I grew up. Both wildly exaggerated and completely recognisable....

BlueBandedButterfly · 01/12/2024 11:08

I used to work on Le Mans Crescent in Bolton. The crescent and the town hall area are use as a filming location for loads of things, including Peaky Blinders and Its a Sin. Sadly never saw anything or anyone of interest when I was working there.
