Ever had a movie/TV series set or filmed in your home town? Was it cringe or "Oh look, that's my house!"

My ex front door in my old flat has been filmed, fleetingly, on the French version of Come Dîne With Me as the historic building above the cheesemongers, and there is a TV series being filmed right now on location in my town depicting us all as mafia connected murderous types but in a tasteful and sort of Inspector Morse way, obviously. I live in Corsica.

I absolutely cringe whenever there is a depiction of where I live or have lived on the old telly screen and just want to shout, "Oh God, no! We're not all like that!"

Apart from the hand over mouth, mumble mumble well, sort of kind of like but...

Do you have experience of this phenomenon?

Inspector morse. Someone would say they are going to well known street and then they would actually go to other well known street.

We had Joan Hickson's Miss Marple version of The Moving Finger filmed in our kitchen. Three scenes. I got to meet Joan and she was lovely...

ohyesido · 30/11/2024 16:31

There was a scene in Trigger Point filmed in the town I live in, Harlow. Can only assume they had a low budget

HelenHywater · 30/11/2024 16:33

I live in fairly central London, so recognise quite a lot of places from near me. Recently there was lots of excitement as Bridget Jones was filming all over the place. I've come across lots of things being filmed over the years.

But Good Omens was filmed in my street which was really exciting (my house features, from the outside!). So we saw both Michael Sheen and David Tenant.

There was an advert filmed here last year too.

A long time ago, but Sorry! was filmed where I grew up, their house was where our GP lived. More recently, lots of Midsummer Murders was filmed there - the am dram stuff was at the actual am dram theatre and the extras for that were all from the am dram group. My dad was an extra occasionally driving a tractor or being a farm worker.
Apart from the murder rates, it all looked pretty true

BruisedNeckMeat · 30/11/2024 16:43

Our house is in the grounds of an old Mansion. My front garden fleetingly appeared in Rocket Man, the movie about Elton John. The mansion was used as the set for his rehab.

Madcats · 30/11/2024 16:44

I live in Bath, so we get used to filming. My garden wall turns up from time to time and I sometimes spot people we know as extras, which adds to the fun. We bore guests with "but they've just teleported 10 miles away" and similar on plenty of shows.

At the risk of derailing the thread, DH and I used to love holidaying in Corsica about 30 years ago, OP. There was still a lot of separatism and distrust of incomers up in the mountains (though they strangely coped with tourist francs and my iffy French). Presumably the road signs aren't all still full of bullet holes?

sharpclawedkitten · 30/11/2024 16:46

Not where I live but I've had friends who've lived near and in Oxford and whenever Morse/Endeavour/Lewis were on they say "oh that's so and so" or "that doesn't lead there" and so on.

I used to like seeing bits of Liverpool in Brookside although most of it was filmed around the Close and not in the centre.

It was quite fun watching a couple of episodes of Bergerac after going to Jersey on holiday and seeing various places - even though it's changed a bit in places since the 80s, it was still quite funny how he'd drive down one road and ended up somewhere very different to where the road actually ended up :)

I live right by Brookside Close so it’s something I was used to growing up and me and my friends used to go to the barriers and watch it being filmed sometimes or try and catch some of the cast as they were leaving.

it is now a regular close with people living in the houses and looks quite tired.
lots and lots of people still turn up to have a look at it all these years on.

One year when I was visiting my cousins they took me up to the barriers :)

TonTonMacoute · 30/11/2024 16:49

Beyond Paradise is filmed in the area I live and it's a bit of a pain, as they take over car parks and block roads for the filming.

It's fun spotting the locations, although I don't watch it any more as I didn't really enjoy it much.

Dawn French filmed a series called Delicious around here too, and now she lives here.

drspouse · 30/11/2024 16:51

I was an au pair in Greece as a student and Pascali's Island was filmed where I was - except they kept turning the corner and skipping to a different island which was disconcerting.

There is also a recent police series where the police station is actually the telephone exchange. (IYKYK).

Was a student in Oxford so got the same "wormhole" issue with Morse. Also it makes you feel a bit insecure with the murder rate! Almost as bad as Midsomer.

sharpclawedkitten · 30/11/2024 16:51

I suppose Taggart made Glasgow look quite grim from time to time, although at least it had a sense of place - in the later series it could have been anywhere really.

If somewhere is actually meant to be based somewhere I want to see the city/town it is based in.

When Monarch of the Glen was on we had a holiday in that part of Scotland and went to a lot of the places it was filmed in - really enjoyed location spotting, but that's a bit different from living somewhere where they do the filming.

drspouse · 30/11/2024 16:53

@bbirdiesings we saw a bit of Manchester standing in for NY too.

And Black Beauty was filmed in Oxford when I was a student - they covered over all the double yellows.

Oh the signs are still full of bullet holes and I wanted to post a short clip of an FLNC press conference but I think it might get the thread deleted. I'm new here, would a clip of men in black balaclavas waving guns and talking through voice changers be considered offensive?

Anyone in Cardiff who's seen Dr Who being filmed locally?

RenoDakota · 30/11/2024 17:13

Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack, Ackley Bridge and the big one, Happy Valley.
A new, upcoming series called Riot Women has been filming in Hebden Bridge for ages now and causing nuisance and inconvenience for locals and especially for business people, with roads constantly being closed off. Is a right pain and I doubt that it will have the warm reception and ongoing affection that Happy Valley did/does around here.

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/11/2024 17:19

Skins
Boarders
Shoestring

Andwhomightyoube · 30/11/2024 17:21

We had a recurring TV series filmed in our little town for years, the only issue is we always missed the key elements of any storylines because we were so busy trying to spot ourselves in the background and spotting the edits (lead actor leaves point A arrives in point B having gone in the wrong direction and passed several local landmarks that aren't actually on route).

Moglet4 · 30/11/2024 17:32

Quite a few over the years but then I’ve also lived in various places. Most memorable was probably Bridget Jones being filmed from the roof of my building. Most annoying though is that so many southerners in particular don’t believe me when I tell them where I’m from because their only experience of the area is Auf Wiedersehn Pet and Byker Grove! They simply refuse to believe that every Geordie doesn’t sound exactly the same 🙄

Tallisker · 30/11/2024 17:34

Someone mentioned Heartbeat upthread, lots of that was filmed round our way. Saw Nick Berry at the cashpoint. My house was covered in paper snow in July for the filming of the Christmas episode, but there was only a fleeting glimpse of it.

manoeuvred · 30/11/2024 17:38

@KnopkaPixie , some scenes from The Wrong Mans (comedy mini-series with James Corden & Matthew Baynton, 2013) were filmed at the end of my road. I walked round the corner, past a warning sign, just as they were shooting a getaway scene and they had to cut it and start again. We never watched it at the time it was released, but have been watching it recently and I recognised the scene ... disappointed I couldn't see myself in the background. 😁

NewGreenDuck · 30/11/2024 17:46

Far From the Madding Crowd was partially filmed where I was born. Everyone was terribly excited, and some of my older relatives were extras. I still point out Uncle Bill!

CurbsideProphet · 30/11/2024 17:49

I'm pretty sure Jason Manford filmed a drama and drove down the Coast Road in Southport, but they said it was Warrington.

I love seeing Grassington in All Creatures Great and Small, but it's funny that the back of the house is in a completely different place.

aintnospringchicken · 30/11/2024 17:50

I worked in Vancouver for a couple of months and kept recognising X-Files locations (I have a photo of me on the escalator where Tooms met his end). A couple of years later they filmed Battlestar Galactica there and I loved spotting my favourite places.

They filmed an episode of Smallville in the museum where I was working and I got to assist with the props. Our staffroom was a set so we were able to use the set canteen for the week and the food was amazing. Never saw the episode!
