Brit facing 60 years for smuggling cocaine

Not sure if this has been done already but having just watched the interview on This Morning I am baffled as to how she would agree to take the suitcase (ended up being two suitcases and one of the main reasons she was pulled aside on arrival in the US) in the first place. Even more odd, why did she accept a free holiday from two random guys she had met only two weeks prior? Interesting turn that she ended up having to flying via the US home instead of her planned flight Cancun - Uk and what a difference that will make in terms of potential punishment. There has to be more to this story

She has to have a story though. If she incriminates herself it's game over. I'm sure she knows that everyone hearing her doesn't believe her.

TiredCatLady · 29/11/2024 13:15

I don’t believe a word of her story.

I do note that she spent time working in a bar in one of Spain’s major drug trafficking hubs.

The US agencies will have trawled through her phone and social media…

Werecat · 29/11/2024 13:22

Well, on the plus side she didn’t pull this in Singapore.

She’s an idiot. A bona fide through and through idiot.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/11/2024 14:33

Have you any idea of the amount of atrocities carried out by the Mexican drug cartels it runs into thousands and they are pretty indiscriminate about who gets murdered.

Of course @Thevelvelletes but we don't sentence people based on the supply chain. Otherwise every man who used a sex worker would be banged up for 100 years too. Every man who watched a sex show in Bangkok would get 1000 years. The people that marketed synthetic opioids would get 100000 years.

She's a fucking idiot. And she committed a crime. But 60 years is ridiculous. Especially in a country where the billionaire owners of drug companies, like Kapoor, who bribed doctors to prescribe fentanyl, get 5 years. In full knowledge he was contributing to the deaths of 10s of thousands of Americans every year.

As always in the American system, lock up the poor, stupid and foreign so you look tough, while being utterly pathetic at dealing with the actual issues.

She won’t be going to jail (here in the US there’s a big difference between jail and prison). Drug trafficking is a federal crime so it’ll be federal prison for her. Those places can be worse than state prisons. But I have no sympathy for her. She knew what she was doing.

What is going on with the photos? More filters than a coffee machine!

In the UK we use the term "jail" and "prison" interchangeably. This is because we do not have the same separation between "jail" and "prison" as exists in the USA. Here, everybody goes to the same jail/prison.

For Brits, in the USA, people who are on remand will be in a jail and after sentencing will be in a prison.

Sometimes, offenders who have been given short sentences may stay at the jail but those given longer sentences will be moved to a prison.

DrZaraCarmichael · 29/11/2024 15:44

Wow, I didn't realise there was this differentiation between jail/prison and agree that in the UK we use the terms interchangeably.

It's academic really whether you think the sentence is justified or not, that's the sentence which applies in the place the crime was committed. As others have said, she should thank her lucky stars she wasn't asked to go to Singapore or one of the Gulf states.

60 years for drug smuggling while a woman who kept her baby in a drawer and stunted its growth only gets 7? what is wrong with the world???

Different countries. She would not get 60 years in the UK

PurpleCarpets · 29/11/2024 16:46

Although in fact we spell it gaol. OK, I'm going back to pedants' corner ...

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 29/11/2024 17:16

OMG the difference between her in those 2 photos! (On the post at 01.36 on page 1 by coxsorangepippin.) Some serious filtering has occurred on the first one. Looks like she is about 4-5 stone heavier on the second one too. Looks like a different woman. Literally looks like a photo of Molly Mae and a photo of Gemma Collins! Shock

I wonder why they posted 2 photos on the article? I have seen these 2 photos side by side on a number of news articles about this story. It's like they're trying to humiliate her.

Anyway, yeah, she is as guilty as sin. AND she knew what she was doing. Farcical that she is trying to convince people she is innocent. 😆

Didn't see the interview as I was out. But I will see if I can find it somewhere online later.

AgnesX · 29/11/2024 17:18

Some people are risk takers....and/or stupid, take your pick.

Either way she deserves to be turfed in the slammer without a key.

AwfulAmount · 29/11/2024 17:25

It was such a bizarre interview.

She seemed to think that because there was a piece of paper saying she was going to be deported that it was a clerical error that she was still in the US. That seemed to be her main point. Confused

And that her dad saying she was a good girl was going to carry weight with the American judicial system.

And that she 'might as well' just be sent home because they aren't ready to go to trial. 'What's the point' of her being there...

It was one of the strangest interviews I've ever seen.

LunaNorth · 29/11/2024 18:20

Apparently Tinder are suing her under the Trades Descriptions Act.

IrritableVowel · 29/11/2024 08:04

Does anyone remember the tv ad from late 80s/early 90s where the (British?) man was on holidays and given a teddy bear by a woman, he got searched in the airport, ted had a belly full of drugs, and ended up in prison with a shaved head (I think somewhere like Bangkok).

Anyway, I was about 10 and it scared the shit out of me.

Maybe a new campaign is needed, but I guess stupid is as stupid does, and people actually think they can out-smart border security.

Just need to watch Bangkok Hilton with the execution scene.

I remember being very careful at the Thai border

You have a very valid point, over prescription of opioids then stopping opened the door to the cartels to fill that void.

Edited

I had my spelling of gaol 'corrected' to 'jail' in a uni essay, I'm still bitter.

Keep me a seat in pedants corner.

Spagettifunctional · 30/11/2024 08:55

I remember being in first year of secondary and Bangkok Hilton with Nicole Kidman was on (mini series and it’s on YouTube)

we we’re asked to write a short story for English of any choice and all of us wrote a story with a Thai prison theme 😂😂😂😂😂😂 English teacher was annoyed

but I’ve been obsessed with foreign prison life since

I saw a comment on X saying they were surprised border force even recognised her, it'd be easier finding Madeleine McCann 😬😆

FungusTap · 30/11/2024 11:19

As she maintains she did not look inside the cases, then she could have been carrying a bomb on board. The questions are asked at check in - did you pack it, has anyone given you anything to carry and such like. She lied, she didn’t care, and for that alone she deserves what’s coming to her.

Every time there’s a case like this the show of entitlement is amazing. I’m waiting for the GoFundMe, just as soon as the dad has processed his disgust at our government not pulling out all the stops for her.

As sure as night follows day the mental health card is now coming into play, not sure how far that will get her with the US authorities.

Hoppinggreen · 30/11/2024 11:35

Even the stupidest person would know that taking a suitcase belonging to a complete stranger who offered you a free holiday to Mexico was a bad idea.
She is lying but I imagine it was sold to her as "you won't get caught but if you do it won't be a big deal"
No sympathy for her at all

3luckystars · 30/11/2024 12:06

They probably told her not to look inside the case as her fingerprints would be on the money/drugs. What an absolute idiot to get herself involved with this, it probably sounded like easy money but as FungusTap said there could have been anything in that bag.

Fizbosshoes · 30/11/2024 15:29

I'm struggling to get into the idea that you'd agree to that with people you just met....from either side. She had no idea she could trust them....they would have no idea they could trust her....unless she was coerced or threatened right from the start.

If it is as she reports and she didn't suspect anything at all dodgy then she must be a scammers dream. She is probably related to all manner of Nigerian Princes or Chinese Royalty.

Well yes, that’s an awful amount of drugs for them to hand over to a rookie mule they hardly knew……

mrstumbler · 30/11/2024 17:45

Whilst I agree she must be either really stupid or really naive, I find the comments on this woman's appearance awful! What has that got to do with anything ?! Why is it okay to comment on what someone looks like ?
So out of order to be slagging off someone's appearance like you all are.

I think you are wilfully misunderstanding the comments on her appearance. They are commenting on the disparity between the photos not calling her on her actual appearance. Have you seen the two photos? They don’t even look like blood relatives!
