Fed up with all the polyester!

I’m getting so frustrated shopping for nice knitwear. Why is everything polyester?! Such a horrible “fabric”, makes me feel like I can’t breathe.

Can anyone recommend a nice brand that uses natural materials?

Nope, can't trust brand names now - they all sneak it in, the only thing I do is now go to retail websites and filter by material as it really matters to me.

JaneandtheLaundry · 28/11/2024 11:29

I tend to buy knitwear that's billed as cotton these days. So many brands are marketing things as wool then you read the label and it's like 11% wool, 89% polyester. I've tried buying second hand real wool and it's always been badly looked after and coarse AF.

It seems like sheep products in general are getting expensive and hard to source, the variety of lamb in my local supermarket is also fairly diminished compared to a few years ago, and really expensive.

henlake7 · 28/11/2024 11:40

I dont think it has ever bothered me what my knitwear is made of (as long as it isnt animal products).
Its more annoying in the summer IMO. You see a lovely dress but its made of polyester so would turn you into a sweaty mess.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/11/2024 11:42

Brora, Woolovers, uniqlo.
You could ask in Style and Beauty.

T4phage · 28/11/2024 11:47

I avoid polyester too as it over heats me and I have over heating problems as it is. I stick to certain brands and read labels avidly. Plastic clothing is so disgusting.

Iliketulips · 28/11/2024 11:56

Both DH and myself hate polyester, we end up feeling sticky in even flimsy material. I tend to go through websites looking for cotton products. I'd rather pay a bit more and have something I know I'm going to wear again and again.

Following as it'll be interesting to see what suggestions OP receives.

Stonefromthehenge · 28/11/2024 11:57

It's polyester at wool prices that gets me...don't get me started on vegan leather

Planits · 28/11/2024 13:44

Plastic clothing is what it is! You see a jumper with a label proudly proclaiming “I’m made from 90% recycled bottles!” …that’s not a good thing?! I just don’t get it.

Also, vegan leather?!

Thank you @SuperLoudPoppingAction, I’ll take a look at those.

Yes I’ve noticed that too! “Wool Jumper” that has 5% wool Hmm

Charity shops and the second hand market are worth a look. You can pick up some wool jumpers at good prices.

SwordToFlamethrower · 28/11/2024 20:08

I was in TK Maxx yesterday and saw an old school tan duffel coat, pegs and all, by Ben Shermon. £399.99 price tag. So I checked the label.

100% polyester!!!! I laughed a very loud and shrill laugh and walked out.

CustardCreams2 · 28/11/2024 20:11

Agree polyester is so cheap. It makes you sweat, is uncomfortable and looks bad. Can’t believe Molly Maes oversized blazer was made mostly from polyester and acrylic. So bad.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 28/11/2024 21:30

It should be banned really, all that plastic getting into the water whenever the clothes are washed. Microfibre pollution is a huge problem and is going to cause huge health challenges in the (near) future. Cheap clothes made for profit.

I’m afraid I can’t think of any brands that use purely natural fibres – how depressing is that?! They must be out there somewhere.

CustardCreams2 · 28/11/2024 21:34

White stuff maybe

Spanglybangles · 28/11/2024 21:38

White Stuff or Seasalt I’m thinking.

Mum2jenny · 28/11/2024 21:40

Polyester is really nasty, I avoid if at all possible.

user12343333333334 · 28/11/2024 21:42

Just thinking about polyester makes my poor, menopausal self, sweat.
Always on the lookout for cotton towelling dressing gowns, the idea of those fleecy abominations upsets me.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/11/2024 21:45

I understand you do not want polyester.
What do you want?

Wool, cotton, alpaca, linen, bamboo?
Is viscose ok?

I also detest the fleecy dressing gowns. Have never bought one.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 28/11/2024 22:29

Next. I shop online and search for lambswool. Bought a couple just a few weeks ago for this winter. In the clearance section, more in the men's than the women's section.

CustardCreams2 · 28/11/2024 22:38

Can’t stand polyester bedsheets either. Has to be cotton. Loving brushed cotton duvets for winter aswell.

Notsogoodhousekeeping · 28/11/2024 22:39

Wool is expensive (although I don’t think farmers see much of the money). Toast, Seasalt, Finisterre all do 100% wool knitwear. I can’t stand polyester or acrylic knitwear, it feels scratchy and bobbles quickly. Plus the massive environmental cost, obvs.

T4phage · 28/11/2024 22:50

I buy cotton tops from Seasalt and linen tops from Ebay. 100% cotton sheets from Dunelm. Sometimes Sainsburys has 100% cotton tops.
