My manager sends me a teams message everytime she sends me an email

To tell me she’s sent me an email

Anyone got either a suitable response which won’t get me sacked or a funny response which will

How infuriating. Every time he does it, send a shrugging emoji.

yukuta · 27/11/2024 15:43

Nanny0gg · 27/11/2024 15:39

Why?

I can understand at home to see if it's convenient, but if you're at work you don't get a choice, surely?

If you’re in the middle of something/need to finish something before jumping on a call it’s nice to have the heads up, totally normal in the company I work for.

Bjorkdidit · 27/11/2024 15:45

But if that's the case you just don't answer? But obviously it depends on who's calling. Someone senior or a client, either directly or via reception, you answer.

But if it's the annoying colleague who you know wants to chat or asks you annoying questions rather than thinking for themselves, perhaps not.

Why can't you just decline the call if you're busy? Or put teams on dnd.

Honestly it was so much simpler in the old days!!!

coxesorangepippin · 27/11/2024 15:46

Same as 'you're welcome'

Via email

Everytime

coxesorangepippin · 27/11/2024 15:47

No worries. Always have my inbox open alongside Teams so I’ve seen it drop in. No need to flag going forward”

^

Do this

Because it’s much easier for both parties to just say give me 10/15 mins or something then declining and ringing back later when they might be busy

BlueTongueSkink · 27/11/2024 15:48

I used to have a boss like this, only she would always phone me to say 'I've just sent you an email'.

It was incredibly annoying.

Nottodaygoaway · 27/11/2024 15:51

This would give me the rage.

Block!

KeenCat · 27/11/2024 15:56

I would much rather someone message me to say 'are you free in the next X minutes for a call?' than phone me out of the blue.

Yes, I can decline the call, but it gives me chance to respond either a yes/no (with more convenient time) and find out what the call is about in case I need to prep.

AuntieJoyce · 27/11/2024 16:01

Mylifeisamesssuchamess · 27/11/2024 15:13

Does it take you too long to reply to an email normally?

This. Why would she create actual work herself every time she sends an email unless she needs you to be more responsive.

KeenCat · 27/11/2024 16:03

She's either a control freak or you're not responsive enough.

Mulhollandmagoo · 27/11/2024 16:07

BashfulClam · 27/11/2024 15:08

Why are people like this? although I did have to teams a colleague to look at her inbox as she doesn’t look at her e-mails till after lunch and had a time critical issue. Even marking it as urgent it’s ’nope After lunch!’ if you are on top of your e-mails though this is micro managing.

This is wild! She doesn't even look at her inbox til after lunch???

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 27/11/2024 16:11

Send her an email thanking her for the teams message.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 27/11/2024 16:20

Bjorkdidit · 27/11/2024 15:36

@helpfulperson that's probably because a lot of people consider a surprise phone call to be 'triggering' and aggressive so it seems it's now an expectation that everyone is pre-warned before being called.

Triggering? At work, when you have a phone specifically designed for that very purpose, so that people can ring you?

helpfulperson · 27/11/2024 16:28

starrymidnight · 27/11/2024 15:35

A heads up about a call is totally different and actually quite considerate.

Saying to someone 'is it convenient to call you in a few minutes?' Is considerate. Saying ' I will call you shortly' is annoying.

EauNeu · 27/11/2024 16:29

Plippleton · 27/11/2024 15:13

I would reply in teams 'What's it about?' every time.. Demonstrate how annoying it is.

Pure brilliance 😁

We don't have phones. My last place of work didn't either, they removed them in a cost saving exercise during the pandemic.

We can only do calls via Teams now and the assumed etiquette is to either schedule a call in advance or if you need to speak urgently, give the other person a heads up.

I've never given it much thought but I guess we're all aware of how busy everyone is, so it feels polite to check in before phoning as someone could be in the middle of something else (and that something else could be more important).

Westofeasttoday · 27/11/2024 16:43

FFS. Total non issue. Correct professional response “okay great thanks I’ll take a look”.

Let it go you are being petty. Maybe she does this because you respond late, or because she wants you to read it right away or because she feels like you will know to look out for it etc, Who cares.

She”s your manager. Suck it up.

lto2019 · 27/11/2024 16:47

This is infuriating - and would make me livid.
Hi annoying knobhead, I do monitor my inbox closely and address tasks as they come in. Would it be okay if we kept our communications to email ?It helps me stay focused.
You might have nothing better to do than duplicate everything you do but I do.
Thanks,

Triggering? At work, when you have a phone specifically designed for that very purpose, so that people can ring you?

Some people do sadly, maybe because they are so used to communicating by text or email.

As for the OP, I'd be tempted to delay sending replies until about two minutes before her manager either logs off or leaves the office. Keep all replies as draft until then.

Omg that would do my head in!! No need!

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/11/2024 17:12

If it's urgent I will send emails plus teams message
