Does anyone get anxious before a holiday?

We are going to Tenerife tonight
Well staying in the airport hotel tonight and flying in the morning.
We are only going for 5 nights and come back Tuesday .
I just feel really anxious as I've dropped my 2 cats off at my dad's.
We don't have any kids yet so these are my babies.
I just feel bad leaving them
My Dad loves them and they will be well looked after
Anyone else ?

Yep. We have a trip to Lanzarote booked for June next year and I'm already anxious about it. Post-Covid, the world feels very big and scary to me and generally, I'd rather be at home than anywhere else. This anxiety doesn't overwhelm me; I continue living life with work, family and social things in much the same way as I always did. I just don't get excited for things in the way I used to.

Peri-menopause and Covid are much to blame, in my case, though.

We're off on holiday tomorrow and I'm feeling anxious. I was fine until Monday. I worry very much about forgetting something, missing check in, the wheelchair attendants forgetting about me, missing the flight. Luckily, my husband is very organised and I know that'll help me calm down a bit.

Kleptronic · 27/11/2024 14:05

Yes me, I'm off on the Eurostar tomorrow and I'm filled with trepidation. Don't understand why, time was I'd go inter-railing and stay in hostels and think nothing of it.

llolay · 27/11/2024 14:06

@MaidOfSteel awww it's horrible isn't it
Where are you off too?
I've got my checklist with boarding passes /passports etc as my partner is the opposite of organised so I do it all
I wish I was there already so I can hopefully relax

Oh yes, I always do. Going on holiday is so stressful. There is sooo much to done before hand and so much not to forget, in addition to the travel and the unknown. There is so much pressure to enjoy yourself too.

Tupperwarefan · 27/11/2024 14:10

@llolay @MaidOfSteel @Kleptronic hope you all have a lovely time! I get anxious before I go on holiday- every time. In the few days before I go I always feel like I wish I wasn't but once Im there, I love it!

WellJuhnelle · 27/11/2024 14:11

Yep, I get really anxious. I never used to until I had children but it is awful the few days before we go. Anxiety gives me a really short temper too so it really spoils the run up for me these days. I have to work really hard to keep it in check so it doesn’t affect the rest of the family.

This really resonates with me. I've not flown for 6 years now due to covid and other reasons and have developed a fear of flying. Being perimenopausal and having children doesn't help either. I did go off interrailing with the kids this summer though and that was fantastic. Although the Eurostar element is still stressful, the rest of the travel was very relaxed with no fear of missing flights etc.

It's nice to feel a little solidarity and understanding here, so thanks OP for starting the thread. Wishing you a really wonderful holiday. Let us know how you get on. You'll be ok once you're there and i'm sure that you'll have a wonderful time.

Daisymay2 · 27/11/2024 14:17

I get bad tempered and anxious before a holiday. Swear it’s the final one.
my mother was just the same.

coxesorangepippin · 27/11/2024 14:18

Same here

Panicking about passports, getting through customs etc

ForRealTurtle · 27/11/2024 14:20

I am like this as I have got older. I used to fly somewhere and just find somewhere to stay when I arrived.
Once I am there I am okay, its the journey that stresses me.
Hope you have a lovely holiday.

Gran Canaria. Really looking forward to it.
But just now I feel sick on case my suitcase weighs more than 23kg when my husband weighs it in a few minutes!
Have a lovely time.

Lolypoly14 · 27/11/2024 14:24

Yes.

I’m terrified of flying so I’m always anxious about the flight in the run up to the holiday, and am then super anxious about the return flight the whole time I’m away.

I’m also pissed off with myself that my fear gets in the way of enjoying myself.

And because I’m already super anxious about the flights, I then panic about missing flights/getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport/my passport mysteriously vanishing/packing the right clothes/whatever random thing I’ve got stuck in my brain and can’t let go off.

I want to see the world, and I do my best to just get on with it, but I drive myself nuts.

Im going to Thailand next year on a dream holiday, it’s just DH and I, but part of me is dreading it.

I’m fine if travelling in the UK.

BringMeTea · 27/11/2024 14:24

Yes. It appears to be an 'age thing'. Mind you I have always hated 'the journey'. Diazepam helps.

Abracadabra12345 · 27/11/2024 14:26

I'm the one who organises everything so feel a weight of responsibility! I never feel relaxed until we've checked into our accommodation ie after the journey to and from the airport with all the admin, booking passes, the lot.

I'm going to do print outs of our tickets and boarding passes just in case something dreadful happens to my phone so there's back up

Once I see that the hotel is okay and we've checked into our, I totally relax and love it

ForRealTurtle · 27/11/2024 14:28

I won't book air bnbs abroad any more after a few occasions where they have been really hard to find and it has been late at night.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/11/2024 14:29

Yes. This is me. I find leaving the cat stressful as well as all the packing, planning, transport, airport security etc. I'm the one who organises it all and every year I swear I'm never doing it again.

Movinghouseatlast · 27/11/2024 14:31

Yes. I worry so much about leaving my cats. They have a cat sitter but won't go to anyone else so I know they will be without love for as long as I'm away.

ThePoshUns · 27/11/2024 14:44

I get terrible anxiety in the run up to holidays.
Mainly because I do all of the arranging/ booking so if anything goes wrong then it's down to me.
It was worse when the kids were little as I'd do all the packing as well.
It is easier now but I don't relax until I'm at the destination.

llolay · 27/11/2024 14:45

@CarnivoreCam why ? What's wrong with Tenerife ? I've never been before
