Hello! I have an onion that has some black mould on the skin. See pic. It's only on one side (rest of skin is perfectly fine)! Would you peel it and use it?
Not sure if safe or not.

I would and I have in the past if it's not soft.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/11/2024 18:59

Absolutely. But I grew up on a farm and am used to non-perfect looking veg.

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 26/11/2024 18:59

Totally.

I would peel it and use it all, cutting off any unappealing bits

Cut the skin off and see if it’s ok underneath

Hellisemptyallthdevilsarehere · 26/11/2024 19:00

It's an onion. Just throw it away and use another.

msmatcha · 26/11/2024 19:00

Peel and see! Be brave!

Marmite27 · 26/11/2024 19:02

are you planning on eating the skin?

dementedpixie · 26/11/2024 19:03

Peel the skin off. The underneath could be fine

Joolsin · 26/11/2024 19:03

It's perfect. Remove the skin as usual and it'll be grand

this is why we are screwed

op it’s fine just chop off the black bits

Coldandunderablanket · 26/11/2024 19:04

Definately use it. It's just on the outside - inside should be perfect. I've used onions like this many many times and never thought anything of it

They cost pennies and if the flavour / texture / nutrition are compromised, why would you eat it?

If I unpeeled it and there was no mould on the actual onion, why would I not? I might not have any more without doing a half hour round trip to Tesco’s

obviously if it was covered in mould I’d chuck it out. But I cut random dodgy bits off veg and eat the rest, all the time

I assume the OP doesn't have another?

But the flavour, texture and nutrition won't be compromised by a small black spot on the skin.

Why waste something that is fine to eat?

IF the flesh is not right, then of course don't eat it.

MintTwirl · 26/11/2024 19:24

Yeah I always use them with marks on the outside. They are always fine inside.

I thought they all looked like that.

Are you serious? There's nothing wrong with it.

... and they say there's a cost of living crisis 🤷🏼‍♀️

MindBodySoul · 26/11/2024 19:31

I just keep taking off layers until it looks good 😂

Womblingmerrily · 26/11/2024 19:33

It's fine. Peel it, if that layer's duff, peel another layer.

Then chop and use as needed.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 26/11/2024 19:36

It’s fine. Take the peel off.

Okayornot · 26/11/2024 19:36

You have to open it and see. The inside may be fine. I opened a perfect looking one yesterday and it was fermenting on the inside.

Username10099 · 26/11/2024 19:37

I'd wash it under a running tap first, then peel and rinse, then peel, pare out any 'soft or discoloured areas, and it should be fine.

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 26/11/2024 19:47

@User19876536484

Some do, Most that I have don't.

I agree. I hate food waste. It's probably fine under the skin but if not just cut any marked bit off.
