Do you get paid early at Xmas?

I'm 6 months into a new job so wasn't at this employer last year. In most of my previous jobs I've been paid early for Xmas. I get paid at the end of the month. I'm in 2 minds it would be useful to get more Xmas things but will make January very long. Or if we don't it'll make January a normal month money wise.
We manage on my salary just but can't save and it's tight.
Hopefully as I'm owed about £500 in expenses I'll get them before Xmas and that can pay for presents.
When do you get paid?

Yes, but only a few days early as we normally get paid on the 24th. It’s for practical reasons really, in case there are any issues and to ensure there are still enough bank account authorisers are around to approve payments before they start going off on holiday.

Frostycottagegarden · 23/11/2024 20:00

I do payroll at my place and we also shut from Christmas Eve until the 2nd Jan. I pay a couple of days before we shut, but am aware that January seems very long as a result.

I'm giving everyone a bonus this year, which I hope will help. And my pay comes out as a standing order, so date doesn't change for me.

TidyDancer · 23/11/2024 20:02

I used to get paid on the 15th of the month in my old job so was always before Christmas but now paid on the last day of the month and is paid as normal. I prefer it tbh. January would feel very long and it's already a miserable month.

We are paying staff on 20/12 this year
We finish up then for 2 weeks
Paying a £500 bonus to each employee

JarvisIsland · 23/11/2024 20:04

Last Friday before Xmas here. I’m not a fan as it makes January very long, and preferred just getting paid as normal. It doesn’t make much difference in the real world, as it’s usually too late to use it for Xmas shopping anyway.

MagneticSquirrel · 23/11/2024 20:05

We get paid early because payroll want it sorted before they go on holiday.

Sillysausage76 · 23/11/2024 20:07

I pay my staff as normal but all get a cash bonus and hamper. They all know this, although they don't know about cash bonus. No xmas party till January as we're too busy.

BoobyDazzler · 23/11/2024 20:08

I get paid on the 20th December then usually about the 24th January. We normally get paid on 28th. I like irc it makes Christmas much easier!

idontknowwhotovotefor · 23/11/2024 20:08

I'm paid by the LA and our date is 23rd all year round, which works out perfectly ❤️

fanaticalfairy · 23/11/2024 20:09

It's all down to whether an actual person press the "pay everyone now" button, or I'd it's automatically done.

I get paid early,and it's annoying.

PastaAndProse · 23/11/2024 20:10

Our normal payday is the 25th. In December it'll be the 23rd.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/11/2024 20:13

No, NHS, we used to buy a vote was taken and it’s now paid as normal, thank goodness

Tarnishedbutton · 23/11/2024 20:42

Local government authority we get paid early 21st I believe last year our normal payday being 28th - I think it's daft if I'm honest if your needing it to pay Christmas then it's just asking for trouble in January so it's straight into my savings pot and transferred back for 28th I am fortunate now that I don't live month to month but I used to.

WhitstablePearl · 23/11/2024 20:43

Yes, I pay my employees a week early. Usually the last Wednesday of the month. December is a week early

HÆLTHEPAIN · 23/11/2024 20:45

I don’t work due to illness but my husband’s goes in around the 20th Dec instead of the last day of the month. We just transfer it straight to a savings account and then transfer it back in when payday should be.

MonsterMunched · 23/11/2024 20:47

Yes- December goes in a week earlier than the usual last working day of the month.

Mum2jenny · 23/11/2024 19:46

Yes, NHS, I think they are paying on 20th of December. However that does make January a very long month.

In my Trust they pay slightly earlier in January to ease back into the year

May09Bump · 23/11/2024 20:51

We always pay our staff early (normally a couple of days before Christmas) and give them a months notice with the date we are paying it on - I remember my Dad getting paid on the 24th and rushing round doing jobs (aka being santa and buying christmas dinner bits) as money was tight, so I always make sure pay is paid in advance (if not needed then they can ringfence until their normal payday).

Merrymess · 23/11/2024 20:52

We get paid slightly earlier in January too so it doesn't feel like january is 300 days long.

coconuttyy · 23/11/2024 22:41

I don’t celebrate the commercial side of Christmas, at most I’ll buy a few presents amounting to less than £100 and won’t be going out shopping or partying between the early pay day on the 23rd and the end of the month so the early pay day won’t affect my December spending.

My bills will come out via direct debit as usual the first week of the following month except I’ll probably pay my credit card bill a bit earlier since I do that manually.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 23/11/2024 22:43

We used to, but that stopped last year. Pay day is 25th so if there's a public holiday we get paid the working day beforehand.

DappledThings · 23/11/2024 22:51

Yes and no. No in that we always get paid the last working day of the month so it isn't technically early but because we close for Christmas (university) it ends up being earlier in the month than a normal month.

My next three paydays will be 29/11, 20/12 and 31/01. I hate it. But unless the university paid payroll OT to come in to run it and be there in case of any issues when we are closed there isn't another option.

Stressedgiraffe · 24/11/2024 00:03

We close on 20th until the 2nd which makes me wonder if it'll be early. I'll need to ring fence it.

No - Last working day of the month as normal. Local authority

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/11/2024 08:19

No, but I get paid on the 20th anyway.
I work for a large organisation and we actually have 3 payroll dates across the month - 15/20/25 - I guess the 25ths will get paid on 24 Dec.:
