Do delivery drivers just not bother to even try ringing/knocking anymore?

They just seem to ring the doorbell and walk away. Just had £100 worth of trainers left on the doorstep in the rain. Immediately had an email through with picture of parcel on the doorstep in the rain. I'm clearly in, lights all on and cars in driveway. This was Evri but theyball seem to do it.
I know it's shitty weather and I'm sure it's a shitty job but it would have taken about 10 seconds longer to wait for me to answer the door.
Or should I just accept it and get a waterproof box for parcels to go in?

Ours are all very good to be fair. Often they leave things in our designated safe space even if someone’s home but I don’t mind that.

This time of year is when things get pretty manic for deliveries so I tend to opt to collect them from our nearest pick up shop. Never had any issues doing this either <touches wood>

UnderZealous · 23/11/2024 16:59

My Royal Mail postie knocks loudly and waits, and greets me with a few words and a smile.
I don't order from the large company beginning with A as the parcel would get nicked.

I've just had a new coat left out in the rain. They didn't knock or ring the bell. That's with Evri - I think they're awful. Amazon are always great here, though.

thearchers · 23/11/2024 17:05

I get what you're saying about the pressure/targets etc. But I'm talking about waiting literally 10 seconds to see if I answer the door. Today I was notified by ring doorbell and got to the door as the delivery guy was walking off up the driveway.
And I'm sorry but if you don't want to work under those conditions, nobody is forcing you to do that job.
We live in a world of onljne shopping, the high street is dying a death like it or not, this is the way we have to shop now to get what we want.
I have just double checked my Evri delivery notification and it says delivered to your address, not handed to resident, so I guess this is how they get away with it.

Where do you stand if someone pinches the parcel?!
We have them left on our doorstep all the time but it's a fairly busy road so I'm just waiting for the day one disappears!

The company you ordered from is liable in these circumstances. Your contract is with them. They have a contract with the courier, so it is up to them to recoup the loss from them.
I once ordered a £600 camera. Had a card through my door saying that as I was out it had been left with a neighbour. The address bore no resemblance to anywhere nearby. I was sent a replacement camera. I do wonder what happened to the first one...

reluctantbrit · 23/11/2024 17:10

We have luckily a lovely Evri driver, friendly and while fast and busy, will wait for you to come to the door.
The previous one had the habit of a) not delivering despite saying it was delivered, b) using the bin as a safe place or c) thowing a parcel over the fence.

C) was a oven proof dish one Christmas, luckily the company immediately replaced it and sent it by DHL instead.

But Amazon - anything goes.

Ponderingwindow · 23/11/2024 17:10

In our neighborhood they don’t knock. They just drop packages and go.

it’s very safe and we have an overhang so as long as they place close to the house and it isn’t raining too hard it’s ok.

we get a lot of deliveries because I shop almost exclusively online due to a medical condition. We bought a ring doorbell so we get motion alerts and know to go retrieve the packages throughout the day since we wfh.

if there is something that needs to be signed for due that day, we put a large, brightly colored note on the door telling them we are home and please ring the bell. Otherwise they will just assume no one is home and leave a note.

isthereaway · 23/11/2024 17:11

@EmmaMaria - me too. They ignored the clear sign, dumped my Dds new headphones in the snow (box open) & left gate open onto an A road too.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 23/11/2024 17:13

Our local Evri driver is lovely. On first name terms, she goes above & beyond.

However DPD are absolute shite. I am disabled so can't move quick. Saw the van pull up & called to my daughter who'd popped home for lunch. I watched the guy go down the driveway, straight past the front door. My daughter went out to to se what he was doing. I have a large garden gate to keep in my 2 large dogs. The utter moron had wrenched the gate open & broke the lock to leave the parcel next to the shed. All he had to do was knock on the door.

I put in a complaint to DPD. Still waiting for the incident form by email 3 weeks later.

Never had a problem with DHL until yesterday when they left a £50 trespass puddle suit outside my front door after not ringing the bell. Then to cap it off the notification said handed to devilsmommy. Cheeky fuckers 🤬

Haruka · 23/11/2024 17:18

I have started rating each and every delivery. Every time a parcel has been dropped over my fence (sometimes breakable) or left on my doorstep I leave a negative rating. Every time it's been handed to me as it should have been I leave a positive rating. Since I have started doing this, I have noticed a slight increase in drivers knocking and waiting. I am guessing I am by far not the only one doing this.

Swissrollover · 23/11/2024 17:26

I have a Ring doorbell and a parcel box. I prefer them to just leave the parcel so that they don't upset my dogs by ringing the bell and waiting.

Drivers can't win. If you can make it easier for them by having a parcel box where your items will stay dry, I don't know why you would prefer them to wait in the rain for you instead. Especially during a storm where they will be delayed all day.

It may only take you 10 seconds to get to the door (really, every time?), but you said it was obvious that people were home, you have a porch set back from the road, you have a ring doorbell, and got an immediate notification email, so where was the harm?

winterwarmerss · 23/11/2024 17:27

Yes, I've heard ratings do matter.

But OP, 10 seconds for every customer adds up and they don't know whether it's 10 seconds or 10 minutes so drop and go. I've had the same happen to me, sometimes appreciated that they've left it, or hammering so hard I think it's the police.

But it's not the option to say don't do the job. Often people have no choice and leave when they can. I'd say to be aware of your own privilege and make concessions, shop differently if it doesn't work for you.

It’s not a privilege to be expected to have your parcel delivered apparently. The issue is the drives want to finish their job in for example 8 hours rather than 9 hours. If it takes 9 hours to do the job appropriately then it takes 9 hours.

AyrshireTryer · 23/11/2024 17:40

Our postie is lovely. Often offer him the use of the loo or a drink.
Someone is generally here but shed always open and he knows that.

If there is nowhere obvious to leave a parcel, you are relying on the delivery person to find a hiding place - hence using a bin. Why not be a big person and get some sort of box.

If the issue is you think the box will be stolen from when you are not at home as you are at work, have the package delivered to work, or the local post office.

The Royal Mail round here from next week deliver parcels up until 8pm.
And a number of Amazon parcels are delivered by them too

They don't know if it's going to be ten seconds or ten minutes or not at all though. Plenty of people leave lights on when they're out.

Also, plenty of people are in fact forced to do jobs like driving delivery trucks, that come with high targets and a lot of stress. Drivers are dealing with traffic and end up working well into the evening to get their packages delivered.

winterwarmerss · 23/11/2024 17:59

@DragonFly98 but they are delivering, just not to everyone's satisfaction, and I'm trying to explain why that might be.

Bramshott · 23/11/2024 18:23

I get that they have a tight schedule, but I wish they would ring as they leave. I had an Amazon delivery this morning, and I was in all morning, but when I opened the door at lunchtime it was sitting soggily on the step.

thearchers · 23/11/2024 18:38

They are not delivering securely though

Right so I'll just accept poor service, so I don't forget that I'm privileged. What a privilege it would be to actually receive a parcel delivered into my own hands, when I'm in the house and would answer the door straight away. I have paid for a delivery service within the cost of my order. By your reckoning I'll just accept the waitress serving my food on the table over the other side of the restaurant, heaven forbid I should actually expect a meal I have paid for to be brought to my table. You call it privilege, I call it expecting to receive the service I have paid for.

Thankfully not a cake!

We had the best evri driver for years. Older guy, polite and chatty, punctual and conscientious. He seems to have retired and we've had a succession ever since. I one particularly bad week we had a large parcel dumped in a neighbour's garden (DH was home and sitting right by the door, at the time), £120 shoes scheduled to arrive on Wednesday left on the doorstep in view of a main road when we were out on Tuesday and a package that was supposedly attempted to be delivered when nothing of the sort happened.

Amazon always dump and run.

Legally it hasn't been delivered if the customer isn't aware that or hasn't given permission for it to be left in that location.

That includes the doorstep.

EllieRosesMammy · 23/11/2024 22:55

Mine do the same. I run a small bakery business from home and I had £100+ worth of chocolate delivered and they thought it was acceptable to just leave the box in the garden. I'm gonna start saying my packages have been stolen and get refunds for them😂

Brownwitch · 23/11/2024 22:59

I have a porch so most drivers leave packages in the porch, ring the bell and leave. They do not wait for me to answer. I also get a notification on my ring app.
I am happy with this as if I am working from home I don't have to leave a call to answer the door.
Occasionally i get a driver who won't leave the package without someone answering the door. I hate this because if they don't leave it I have to wait until they can deliver again or worst of all they leave a note that I have to collect it from a depot.
