Large adult fox in my garden, is there any danger it;ll get through the cat flap?

A couple of times this week either one of our cats has got agitated or the garden lights have come on.

Standing right at the French Doors is an adult fox as bold as.
The cats have a microchip activated door set into the glass panel .

I scared off the fox by clanging two metal plates together . I don;t want to encourage it but I don;t wish it any harm.
Just for it to Stay Away .
There's no food or bins out there and no hutched pets .

Is there a risk of it getting in? The cat door protects mine against other cats but this is a big fox (I;m hoping too big to even think about trying )

No photo BTW , I just wanted him/her gone !

I doubt it. We had foxes living under our shed for a few years. They didn't ever come into the house

There's been foxes in the garden (well the garages at the bottom of the gardens ) for years here , I used to keep guinea-pigs in a Fort Knox shed so I was always wary .
But none as bold as this one it stood looking at me !

Are you in an urban area?

I ask as a London fox is bold as brass, but a countryside fox is unlikely to come in

Im quite jealous!

Sayoonara · 22/11/2024 20:11

Would it fit if it's that big? I have foxes that come up to my back door and stare in through the closed cat flap, they've not actually tried it though, to my knowledge.

At night I do cover it with a cushion and chair, as I'm scared my cat will hurt herself. She throws herself at the locked cat flap if she sees a fox or cat staring in.

Put a noisy thing at the cat flap like a bell or something that will clatter.
I had a fox come in at night through the patio door in the summer, we were all at the table and turned and looked at it and it ran out again, it obviously was not expecting us. It was pretty terrified.

Thornrose · 22/11/2024 20:18

I hate to tell you but my neighbour had a fox come through her cat flap at 5am recently.

She has a dog as well! 😮

Pashazade · 22/11/2024 20:20

We had them come in whilst the hole for the cat flap was there, they stole cat biscuits! But once the flap went in they didn't try again. We have a giant cat flap, so I should think normal size would be less attractive. Not a fully urban fox though. We're in town but too much countryside round here for that!

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 22/11/2024 20:21

Can you get someone to shoot it? Hate foxes.

But presumably not a micro-chip cat flap?

She just said "it was locked".

ohyesido · 22/11/2024 20:24

It won't come in, foxes are generally cowardly and will run off rather than confront

corlan · 22/11/2024 20:26

I'm in suburban London - we have a lot of foxes here and I've had a couple come in the conservatory when I've left the door open.
Having said that, I've seen a local fox try and take on a cat and the cat sent the fox packing very quickly.

Yikes!

I've had a fox come into the house when the doors were open on a summer evening. I yelled & stomped my feet & waved my arms & chased it off.

A couple of summers ago we had a very bold fox who came up to the house, wasn't phased by being yelled at & chased off. I used the hose to deter it & it seemed to disappear.

I'm in London & the foxes are brazen.
It's sad to see them here, it's so far from their natural rural environment.

Go away with your idiotic comment.

I hate you. Can I shoot you?

flotsomandjetsome · 22/11/2024 20:51

Not likely to be interested in the cat flap. We have a family of foxes in the garden. Mum, Dad and occasional cubs (6 this year - who move on to their own territory when they are big enough).

We have a cat and they have never caused any issues with him. The cat watches from a distance, he's particularly fascinated by the cubs when they are playing, and the foxes just do their own thing. They never interact directly with each other, but will happily be in the garden at the same time / walk past each other at a reasonable distance.

Startingagainandagain · 22/11/2024 21:17

I have foxes coming into my garden almost every night. Sometimes they even appear during the day.

They haven't attempted to get inside the house so far.

Why?

They are just a wild animal going about their business. It's not their fault we are in their environment, is it?

Jesus ! In my OP I wrote "I don;t wish it any harm" so no , I won;t be getting someone round to shoot it Hmm

We put something behind the catdoor otherwise our two little pests would sit there making it go click click click .

I am told an adult cat won;t be at risk from a fox but I don;t want to find out !

But these catdoors in glass are ££ so don;t want it damaged either .

The foxes usually hang about on the garage roofs at the end of the gardens.

We;re on East London .
