Napping at 4pm aged 50 - normal?

PlopSofa · 20/11/2024 17:09

Is it normal to be napping at 4pm for 15 mins most days?

I get so tired that I often will take a short nap on the sofa at 4pm.

now I won’t sleep until midnight or later.

but I feel amazing now I had thr nap. Before I felt like thick sludge. Exhausted. Now I feel like I could do a workout.

I went to bed at midnight last night too. Slept with two wee breaks in the night until 7pm.

Anyone else find themselves in this napping habit. I hate it but I can’t seem to get through the day.

DD has ADHD and is in bed so late. And I can’t seem to sleep until she’s in bed…

Why do you hate it - it clearly works for you! I would be more concerned about needing two wee breaks in a 7 hour sleep.

Goatmumma · 20/11/2024 17:10

I could nap at any time of day. I’m in my fifties. I think the main thing is it’s not massively impacting on your ability to sleep at night. A nana nap is always a good thing.

tinydynamine · 20/11/2024 17:14

I do this at weekends, but for longer than 15 minutes and in bed.. Not an option during the week unfortunately.

I'm 55 if if it wasn't for a pesky f/t job I'd definitely nap during the day, every day! I often go to bed for a quick nap in the afternoon at weekends - I wake really early, so I don't feel guitly. If you feel better for it then go for it.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 20/11/2024 17:17

I love a nap. I get up at 5.30 every week day, go to bed around 11, and don't really think it's outrageous at my age (50ish) to have a bit of shut-eye for a few minutes in the late afternoon when I can.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 20/11/2024 17:18

At my age, my mother used to come home from work and go to bed for an hour.

devildeepbluesea · 20/11/2024 17:19

I could sleep on a clothes line and I love a nana nap in the afternoon (had one today!). I still get my 7-8 hours per night, usually between 10-6am. Early bird here.

gettingolderbutcooler · 20/11/2024 17:21

I'm 59, work part time. But on my days off I go to the gym or horse riding.
Bloody love a nap afterwards.

hopeishere · 20/11/2024 17:23

I wish I could nap!! I feel so ill afterwards it's not worth it.

gingercat02 · 20/11/2024 17:24

A nana nap is the best, especially on a Sunday afternoon. When I retire, I'll be having one anytime I fancy it. 15 mins isn't enough. I like about an hour (I'm 55)
I go to bed about 10:30-7:30 now but don't sleep very well so a wee snooze never goes amiss 💤

Doggymummar · 20/11/2024 17:27

I go for a nap on a Sunday at three without fail. I'm 55 and cut down to working three days a week about 18 months ago. I used to need naps but not smo much so now.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/11/2024 17:31

I would LOVE to be able to nap! Never have been able to, but it would be so good, especially after a bad night's sleep when I have a late shift at work I'd love a little nap before I went in to work. Have tried, just can't.

Comedycook · 20/11/2024 17:33

I have a nap several times a week...I'm 43. I was absolutely wiped out after the school run yesterday so slept for twenty minutes.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 20/11/2024 17:43

I've worked from home for 15 years and routinely have a nana nap at exactly 3pm. Never more than 20 minutes end to end. It's amazing.

I think it's to do with circadian rhythms, most of us have a time in our day when we need to just take a beat. I think by the time I settle and actually fall asleep I'm not getting more than 10 minutes, and I never go later than 330 or it does interfere with my night time sleep, but I'm a huge proponent of doing what makes you feel good.

Oreyt · 20/11/2024 17:44

I'm 40 and fall asleep once or twice every day

Topseyt123 · 20/11/2024 17:48

That's about the time of the afternoon that I can just drift off into a doze if I am just sitting down and not doing anything in particular. I am 58.

My DH is similar, as is my mother. We have nicknamed it the afternoon lull! I think it is actually quite common.

Always had a dodgy bladder unfortunately that needs to go far too often…

but this is all very reassuring to know I’m not aging disproportionately to everyone else!! I was getting worried that I’m in my 70s early!

my grandpa always had a nap in the afternoon but he was 70 something. So I feel like I’m peaking a bit too early with regards to naps.

But maybe not. I never used to be able to fall asleep like this. Quite the opposite but now if I’m on the sofa, kids often still out at school/activities and bam I’m asleep after closing my eyes in just 3 or 4 mins.

Ok I shall keep going. Modern life is so busy. Brain and body needs a rest I guess. It leaves me feeling much better but wrecks bedtime… and so the cycle continues…

I don't think age is relevant - if a nap works for you, then have a nap. I personally have never been someone who naps (even as a child, apparently) but I know loads of people who love a power nap! If I fall asleep during the day, I just feel disorientated and rubbish when I wake up, but that's just me - I definitely have friends who routinely have a 10-minute snooze during the day or whatever.

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/11/2024 17:56

Nothing like a power nap. I work nights so my sleep is all over the place. I'm in mid 50s.

Newgirls · 20/11/2024 17:57

Nap sounds normal to me!

about the dodgy bladder - do you know about vaginal oestrogen - it’s very good for bladders, utis etc

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/11/2024 17:58

When I worked part time and had primary aged kids I'd regularly fit in a nana nap before school pickup on my days off. Kept me going for the rest of the day.

We had a snow day yesterday and my kids are older so were at work, as was DH. So I had a glorious 40 mins nap at lunchtime. :)

Useofstirm · 20/11/2024 18:01

Yes 59 here and love a nap. Do what suits your body I say

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/11/2024 18:05

I’m 51 & nap at weekends sometimes, I’m often up at 5 on weekdays to go to the gym so it’s a way to catch up.

But, nana nap??? What an awful name!

DatingDinosaur · 20/11/2024 18:12

Wish I could have a nap at my desk in an afternoon. Usually a couple of hours after lunch and I'm yawning my head off and have to go for a walk to the copier, loo, kitchen, collect the office mail, wander round the building with a pen and paper in my hand to look like I'm doing something work related.

I've been like that for as long as I can remember, definitely since my 30s.

I envy you OP for being able to give in to the sleepy urge.

NewName24 · 20/11/2024 18:12

this.
Personally, I LOVE a nana nap, but dh just feels completely disorientated.
That's been the same throughout our marriage though so I don't think it is anything to do with age, just how you are wired.

As long as you aren't at work, or driving, then do whatever works for you.

As a pp said, needing to get up twice for a wee during a 7 hour sleep is far more concerning.
