Things they don't do on telly or in films

Appreciating that it is impossible to represent every nuance of everyday life on the screen, what annoying things don't happen on screen that do happen IRL?
For me, it's not adjusting car seats. How is a 5'4" person suddenly able to hop in a car that's just been driven by someone of 6' 2" without spending several minutes moving up/down/forwards/backwards. etc.
Also (mainly American) no-one says goodbye at the end of a phone call and most family meals are comprised of mashed potato - does anyone eat a roastie or a Dauphinoise?!

If they organise childcare at all there is always a neighbour on hand who is delighted to give free childcare at a moment's notice on a regular basis. They are available 24/7 and always answer their phone.

Otherwise it's down to a long suffering wife or neglected husband, both of whom are seen sighing loudly or, if a wife, are sometimes allowed out to a glam event because dh needs a promotion

When DH first went to a pub and ordered his first drink he asked for “a pint of beer” and was astonished to be asked which one - on the telly they just asked for a pint and that was it!

Aww, bless! 😁

@Chemenger, heh heh. In the books, I thought Jackson had the Chinese takeaway below on constant alert plus was known for nicking anyone's food stored in office Fridge!

He does, I had forgotten about the standing order for Chinese food (or maybe I choose not to think about how horrible Jackson eating noodles could be).

I need to warch that just for the satisfaction of seeing it.
If I had to jump (generous description given my general creakiness!) Into our car in an emergency after my DH had been in it, the emergency would be done and dusted, and discussed at dinner before the car seat was adjusted!

It's on YouTube! Relevant scene is at about 38:40.

Small children get read one story and go to bed happily, lights out job done.

Thelittleweasel · 20/11/2024 10:49

@Dillygaf

Rarely - if ever - does anyone use the toilet.

In American films and TV [etc] the participants keep their underwear on when doing the deed. [Surely must limit the fun?]

hailu · 20/11/2024 11:41

I posted upthread about people never taking their shoes off and just putting feet up with shoes on the sofa. I was watching some Grey's Anatomy last night and straightaway there was another example of it. Jo buys Alex a new sofa, shows him the sofa then goes and sits on it crosslegged with her shoes on. On the new sofa!!! At least Alex sat on it with his feet on the floor!

No-one ever quotes other films or telly in the way people IRL do like, for example, asking someone if they want a cup of tea in the voice of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted. There was a lovely thread on here a while back with loads of similar sayings you all have in your families yet nobody ever speaks like that on telly. Although I imagine the copyright implications of this would be prohibitive.

fussychica · 20/11/2024 12:30

Eat the bloody meal on their plate and often the same for drink. At home or in a restaurant/bar.
Who are these characters who can buy an expensive meal or drink and walk out with eating drinking or even paying for it sometimes.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 20/11/2024 17:36

When people get off their horse, do they lead it into its stable and take the saddle & bridle off? Nope.

On their return, there's always some random extra conveniently standing idle in the stable yard, who takes the horse and wanders off with it without a backward glance.

Clawdy · 20/11/2024 17:47

They live in big house with garden all round , but at night never draw curtains when it's dark! Someone is always watching.......

To be fair if it’s a period drama or they are rich this is probably accurate

minipie · 20/11/2024 18:54

YesPleaseMary on that note, nobody ever watches TV! Or spends time scrolling on their phone.

suburburban · 20/11/2024 19:41

No ones make up smudges even after sleeping

e.g. Therese in Neighbours after sleeping for 8 hours

Especially in Midsomer. These people never learn!

Lostinidea · 20/11/2024 20:31

Anyone who ever goes into hospital for anything from an ingrowing toenail to giving birth always has a private room all to themselves.

The person who they order their drink from in the pub can take their money and give change without having to look at what their doing or work out how much.

Kids come home from school looking immaculate.

There's always enough bedrooms no matter how many people live in the house and always room for someone to suddenly be taken in at a moments notice with no issues.

They always think the terrifying serial killer is just a mate messing about so don't need to take it seriously.

I was thinking more of your average Midsomer Murders episode to be honest!

The ones riding in Midsomer tend to be stupid rich, too (usually with the emphasis on stupid).

Or if they are being questioned by the police they will continue to sort the horse out while being questioned.

Ferro · 20/11/2024 23:26

Some guy in New York with a normal job having a massive loft apartment.

I assumed this was why the characters are all lawyers or whatever.

The first Jamie Oliver series was like this too – he was shown supposedly living in this massive London flat which he could not have possibly afforded on a sous chef's wage.

decembersnows · 20/11/2024 23:27

These big American houses in films. And yet when the couple have a row one of them ends up sleeping on the sofa instead of one of the gazillion spare rooms

HeadsAlwaysSpinnig · 20/11/2024 23:41

Use toothpaste when they brush their teeth!

LOL yes!

HRTQueen · 21/11/2024 00:08

When stressed they drink straight whiskey and often a good few shots

they down it so easily, it never seems to effect them they never pull a ‘that’s a bit harsh’ face and often then get in their car and drive off

Tarkan · 21/11/2024 03:07

On the subject of horses, fantasy (and sometimes period) shows tend to be the worst for this, horses that they ride off on and gallop for miles and miles and miles often without a break. And the horse is perfectly fine when they jump off.
