Inventive cooking methods. Not dishwasher salmon but what's your best cuisine in extermis triumph?

Unless you have ever made dishwasher salmon, of course. I haven’t got an oven at the moment and I managed to make a proper layered lasagne with béchamel that went brown on top in a deep frying pan with a lid.

Camping? Holiday flat? That sort of thing.

I managed to boil sprouts in a kettle at Uni. Not a good idea!

MissyGirlie · 18/11/2024 20:43

Potatoes cooked in the ashes of a driftwood fire were bloody excellent.

DH and a friend once managed steak and fried potatoes plus a sauce and a salad, for seven people, on 2 or 3 rings at a campsite once.

Soup made from whizzing up vegetables in a blender with stock and water then boiled in the kettle to cook it....it was fucking vile 👌

I have a wonderbag - brown meat and veg, add sauce of choice, bring to boil, drop the whole pan into the wonderbag including lid, it tea towel over pan lid, put wonderbag lid into place and draw the string, leave for 6 hours ... I've opened the bag in all kinds of places, camping, on boats, even flew with it (domestic flight of course)

I love my wonderbag too.

Cut a thick slice from a big white farmhouse loaf. Butter generously with salted butter. Then grill it. Somehow it smells like bacon while it's grilling, and tastes like perfect fried bread. But it's just toast and butter done the other way round.

Those Air B&B's in Afghanistan can be a very mixed bag, n'est-ce pas?

😂 I actually have an old 2003 Bradt guide to Kabul that includes such shining recommendations as, “it even has a swimming pool that they assure customers will be filled for the summer, however, it is currently little more than an extremely large bird birth,” and “the rooms are rudimentary and bland. Windows were blown out during a bomb explosion in September,” and “the bar was temporarily closed after the UN banned their staff over security concerns.”

I've got a hob, a microwave, a toaster and a breville. A world of oppotunities really.

No oven, no dishwasher, no trouser press, no hair straighteners, no car engine, no magnifying glass and a pile of dry grass

Oh, I do have a bun tray and could buy some tea lights to cook an omelette. I've seen that in a hurricane survival video by a very nice lady called Pam. She always says, ''Come with me, I'll show you what to do!" She's very capable.

As someone who has looked around for a grownup in an emergency, only to realise that I'm the sodding grownup now, Pam the capable video lady sounds very reassuring. Could you share a link please?

Not nearly as inventive as you lot, but doing full Christmas dinner in Airbnb with limited equipment, I discovered that in the absence of a proper whisk you can whip cream with a fish slice.

You didn't try the Edward Scissorforks option?

I trust Pam to whoop my skinny white ass into shape no matter what the circumstances.

She has (at least) three channels:

Cooking at Pam's Place.

The Scaredycat Gardener.

Pam's POV.

Pam's POV is rather more wide ranging and covers cleaning tips, internet scams, porch pirates, avoiding being ripped off in any consumer situation, self defence, DIY, repelling varmints, how to pack a bug out bag, the best way to float on a refridgerator carcass down the Mississipi in a hurricane, there's absolutely nothing Pam isn't prepared for.

I truly believe Pam could bring about world peace. Just fly her on Airforce One to see all the major world leaders.

Pam again. I bet you never knew about the sock over the baseball bat trick. Home defence.

Kim Jung Un would be no match for Pam and I bet she would make him cry for keeping kimchi in a stinky tupperware.

I’ve done dishwasher salmon many times for big get togethers. I also ironed my grilled cheese sandwiches when I lived in a bedsit.

In both cases you need to wrap well with foil.

You can also cook bacon, eggs and hash browns on a panini press if your hob is out of order.

GiddyRobin · 19/11/2024 01:54

Not sure if it's that ingenious, but pizza on a proper garden bbq with a lid. It's bloody lovely! Obviously a pre-made one with a solid base, but it works! Haven't done it for ages now because DH loves his fancy pizza oven and making dough, but this works a treat and has such a different taste!

I can't beat dishwasher salmon, but I'm an Airbnb host and a recent guest (young rich Chinese girl) put a towel in the dishwasher to wash (alongside plates and cutlery).

KnopkaPixie · 19/11/2024 02:07

Now we just need to find somebody who has cooked with:

A Corby trouser press.
Hair straighteners.
Really inside a car bonnet.

Oh, who knows what else?

You've never had somebody try to dry their pants and socks in the microwave?

No, not yet, but years ago I had two girls who attempted to 'humidify' the bedroom by putting wet towels on top of the silk lampshades, then were very surprised at the result.

RogueFemale · 19/11/2024 02:36

It's always always young women. They are historically the worst guests by far.
