It's the Friday before Christmas (mad Friday) in 1994. What are you upto?!

I have just picked my mail up for the week as I have been on Holiday and I been sent a medical appointment through for a mini op on 'mad Friday' which will lead me to spending the eve in my pjs it got me thinking.

In 1994 I'd have knocked off work at lunch time - I would have gone with my mates Angie and Fiona who I worked with to the bars near my work and we would be firmly on the 'lash'.

I'd probably have got changed in the toilets at work into something I might be able to fit one leg into now 😆 probably some sort of black Mini dress.

This would be the last Christmas of singledom before I met my husband the following summer and I probably won't spend much that night!

1994 mad Friday ... What are you upto?

I was 2 months pregnant with my youngest, I would probably be wrapping presents for my other 2 DCs in my lounge whilst watching Christmas films, eating too much chocolate :) in all honesty I cant remember.

Floralnomad · 17/11/2024 19:28

Our eldest would be 11 months old so no idea what I would be doing

Judgementalbadgerface · 17/11/2024 19:31

Listening to wet wet wet on cassette on repeat in my bedroom, writing in my diary about my crush, first Christmas at high school! Would have given school friends their Christmas gifts that day …that I’d bought from body shop, WHSmiths and M&S on my first unsupervised shopping trip ☺️

momager1 · 17/11/2024 19:31

probably trying to keep up appearances in front of my 7 year old daughter and pretending that my then husband was the man everyone thought he was , while I was preparing everything for christmas eve get together that I hosted every year for both our families. Swearing to myself that it would be my last Christmas married. It was. TO HIM. Left his abusive ass in August. But I swore I would never marry again, and I lied to myself. Just celebrated 20 years married to a NON asshole and Christmas is sooooo much nicer now.

I was 8 months pregnant and DH and I had a couple of his friends for lunch that Friday. I became increasingly uncomfortable and was relieved when they buggered off to the pub.

I went to bed with backache and had a disturbed night. It was the start.

DS was born shortly after midnight on 25th December!

I'm 10 I'm 1994. I would have been in 5th grade and most likely would have broken up from school the week before.

I would have been being made to do my homework assignments in the morning before the family arrived, and Christmas properly kicked off.

Waiting for my great uncle to arrive from the country side and watching Christmas specials on TV with my sisters making popcorn and cranberry garland for the tree, drinking hot chocolate with one jumbo marshmallow bobbing around in it.

There'd be a huge bowl of nuts with chunks of broken up chocolate bars, candy canes cakes and tarts, cheese and crackers on a grazing table my grandmother always had ready for the days before Christmas and up to New year. Because anyone could pop in and they of course needed to be fed and soaked in booze before they would be allowed to leave

That very day we were moving with our two dcs into the old victorian house we still occupy. DH bought an enormous Christmas tree which we decorated immediately, leaving our boxes unpacked. And we had to write urgent letters to Santa informing him of our change of address.

Lovely!!

I was probably driving with exH to spend Christmas with the ILs. Nine hour drive, DCs 1 and 2 in car seats. Santa's presents in the boot.

DistractMe · 17/11/2024 19:49

I'm at home with my six month old baby, trying to remember what sleep was like.

ThePoshUns · 17/11/2024 20:35

I was working a night shift policing the drunks on the town centre

OolongTeaDrinker · 17/11/2024 20:37

Just at home with my parents and brothers, probably watching something like a Muppet's Christmas Carol and having a Chinese takeaway. Ahh to be a kid again with none of life's worries and cares!

Topsy44 · 17/11/2024 20:38

I was travelling in Australia looking forward to a Xmas day on Bondi Beach but it ended up being cloudy and not great weather!!

friendconcern · 17/11/2024 20:39

Lock in in the village pub.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/11/2024 20:40

Recovering from wisdom tooth surgery. It was also a few months before my wedding so was probably making plans.

MissyB1 · 17/11/2024 20:40

I was 7 months pregnant with ds2 and working part time nights as a nurse, I often worked Friday nights, I would have been counting down the days until my maternity leave.

leftfootinletfootout · 17/11/2024 18:49

Pissed up at uni probably, and a size 8, sigh 😮‍💨...

This lol! Or maybe a 10

Probably working and then out with my boyfriend

TitaniasAss · 17/11/2024 20:44

I worked in an estate agents at the time and we would all have been out getting hammered.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/11/2024 20:47

Breaking up from school, maybe.. Although we used to break up earlier then so probably doing my mom's head in as I was peak hyper!

Hatty65 · 17/11/2024 20:48

Dec 1994 - I'm 7 months pregnant and have a 17 month old toddler, so definitely not out on the lash. Probably falling out with my arsehole of an ex husband.

I'm not fondly looking back to those days, to be honest.

Although I was MUCH thinner. (Even when 7 months pregnant)

Katherineryan1986 · 17/11/2024 20:48

I was 28 and had had a prem baby in the September. I spent the 5 or 6 days before Christmas in 1994 in the children's ward of the hospital with my baby in an oxygen tent due to brochiolitis 😔
My baby grew into a robust outdoors girl and now has a baby of her own and another on the way 😁

FuckThePoPo · 17/11/2024 20:52

I was 22 and would have worked in my London job until probably 3 or so then went to the pub with colleagues for a few drinks then home to my boyfriend who I lived with. I got married the following year so I was engaged. We had Fridays with our friends and Saturdays together so I would go to a club with my friends. I would have worn my Levi 501 size 30x30 with a belt they were big I was tiny! Or a black boucle mini dress that I would of got from Romford market or Dagenham Sunday market. 90's fashion 😂

Itsaweirdone · 17/11/2024 20:53

I was 12 and in the deepest realms of an ASD obsession with a singer from an obscure band and had told my parents it was the last Xmas I’d be at home as I was planning to meet him the following year and marry him (not sure i was aware of how illegal that would have been !!!!). My poor DM had had to source my gifts from a relative in the US as id only accept things to do with said singer 😂😂😂

julesagain · 17/11/2024 20:55

Having worked a crazy amount of hours a week in the three months leading up to Christmas, I was left with annual leave to be taken before the year end. I had finished work the previous week and within a few days had developed Shingles. This nad Friday would have been very painful and miserable. I didn't feel 100% until the spring. I was only 23 at the time too.

frippit · 17/11/2024 20:55

I was in labour with my son and waiting for my parents to arrive to look after my daughter. I remember my dad asking how long it was between contractions and looking worried before my husband and I headed off to the hospital.
My son was born the next day, he's 30 this year, and recently had a son of his own.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 17/11/2024 20:57

I was stood, looking cool as fuck, long blonde hair to my waist, 8 stone, head to toe in black & snakeskin about to launch onto the dance floor to head bang to Pearljam or metalica or smells like teen spirit.
Bought my first house for under £30k, not a care in the world contemplating night shifts over Christmas.

Happy happy days!

TheFairyCaravan · 17/11/2024 20:59

I was 23. I’d given birth to DS1 on the 14th December. I’d had a horrible long labour and a ventouse delivery. I was sore and tired and trying to establish breastfeeding. My very healthy grandfather died suddenly on the 21st which was a complete shock.

We stupidly travelled from South Wales to Nottinghamshire to spend Christmas with PILs and the rest of the family. We got there to find SIL & BIL had been given the double bed and we were on a blow up mattress on the floor. On the actual Friday, all of DH’s grandparents came for the day. DS1 was passed round like a doll. It was awful. I hated every second. I went upstairs to feed him about 6pm and never went back down.

I wish we’d stayed at home and had beans on toast for Christmas dinner, I really do.
