Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Lemon puff biscuits.

Can still buy them in cheap shops. Or they sell a nicer Sri Lankan version (chocolate too) you may be able to get in an Asian supermarket.

Curd tarts! As in curd cheese not lemon curd. With lots of currants.
There's a little bakery round the corner from me that used to make them but they've stopped in favour of trendier items and I'm so sad!

Oh those used to be my Dad's favourite thing. I haven't thought of them in years. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood!

His other favourite thing which has also come up on this thread was chocolate blancmange - always at Christmas, and made using a packet mix. The rest of us hated it.

For Cremola you could search for ground rice - you could get that in packets same as semolina (ground durum wheat)

My ex loved them, so when first married I had a go - only the amount of rice looked so pitiful that I kept adding more before popping it in the oven on low

An hour later it looked like a volcano in there ...

@Gothamcity I love ground white pepper for my fried eggs or mashed potato, it's just better.

I love white pepper on chicken and sweetcorn soup and on beetroot sandwiches (must be made on white buttered bread)

ETA there's a curd tart recipe in my Bero book.

Ditto to cheese and pineapple hedgehogs - used to make these for Gdcs’ parties when they were very small and parents were also attending. They were largely scoffed by the parents!

And sausages on sticks. I once made a load of these for an upmarket alfresco lunch party - mostly French guests - at a chateau in Burgundy belonging to a BiL. I’d taken a couple of packs of frozen best quality sausages to act as ice packs for other food, and since they had thawed I thought I might as well use them up.
They all vanished within a minute!

I'm making chicken pie tonight for the first time in many years. It's going to be in a creamy mustard sauce. Would it be weird to serve it with gravy? I'm doing potatoes and greens for the side

@Georgyporky re offal, I think waitrose sell some. I know some independent/halal shops might.

I've definitely bought 'old style ' cuts from waitrose, skirt, feather and cheek. And their boned rolled lamb breast is usually cheap (yum)
I would love to buy mutton but it's scarce and very expensive 😫

I had lemon puffs a few weeks ago, but unfortunately can't remember where from, sorry.
I love making rice pudding, must have cream in it though.
I also love a Spam fritter (homemade) The shop bought ones aren't right to me.

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

My mum used to make a chocolate one in a rabbit shaped mould, with lime jelly as 'grass' underneath, for birthday parties. I haven't ever seen chocolate jelly so there must have been special blancmange mix.

I once made butterscotch Angel Delight for DC as a retro dessert to let them know what we had in the 1970s. They loved it so much it became a regular treat.

Potatoes & onions with Yorkshire pudding. It's basically a stew without meat or veg, just potatoes & sliced onions in a gravy sauce. It was eaten regularly during the war. I know it sounds tasteless but it's actually bloody nice. Potatoes go really well with just onion.

I miss proper over baked milk puddings - both rice pudding and tapioca. They were firmer and had more texture (as well as calories!) made properly and I loved the nutmeg my mum used to put on it.

You've made me look for my late Mum's Clever with Cream book and I can't find it anywhere. I used to make some of the weird 70s stuff from that and I think there was a cornflake tart thing in there @Busywithsomething but all I can find online that looks similar is this - https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/easy-cornflake-tart.
Now I've realised I'll never have Steak Marilyn Monroe ever again. Or that weird rum, raisin and nut flan. It looked revolting but tasted so good.

We had that one! There's an 80s version on Amazon for £20😳pretty sure they were free from the milkman.

I'm feeling very nostalgic now and would love a big dollop of treacle suet pudding with proper custard (not that sweet crap you can buy ready made!). Mum also used to make spotted dick regularly too, steamed in the pressure cooker for what felt like a lifetime 😂

Cheese pudding, like my DM used to make. Alas I never got the recipe from her, never quite sure of quantities of breadcrumbs, cheese, milk and eggs. Utterly delicious comfort food though - must do a Google search for one that hasn’t been poncified with e.g. aubergines and garlic, so that it no longer appears so shamefacedly British - in some people’s opinions, that is.

My mum used to make corned beef hash. Layers of mashed potatoe alternated with corned beef slices from the butcher. Sometimes a couple of layers of baked beans too. Thick layer of mashed potatoe on top. Cooked in the oven until potato on top went crispy. Lashings of brown sauce.

Stewed sausages. Fry wee Willie winkie sausages, cut into 3 pierces and added to a pot of gravy and boiled potatoes, sometimes sliced carrots. Bring to the boil and serve in a bowl once the gravy had begun to thicken. Amazing. I used to eat all the sausage and carrots then mash the potato into the gravy and dip bread in.

Yesterday it was 2 pints of semi skimmed - I needed to use it up! It’d be creamier with full fat or e.g. half evaporated, but TBH I prefer it not too creamy.

I make vol au vents at Christmas. The kids all take the proverbial but they are gone very quickly!

My nana used to make jelly with milk.

She always made Melba toast to have with soup at Christmas or any family get together.
She made it properly under the grill, toast the bread, cut in half and put back under the grill. You could see it curl up and had to be quick to get it out or it burnt !

Pavlova or bread/butter pudding for afters.
