How on earth can I exchange this gift?

thesatsumabutter · 16/11/2024 15:59

Ex BF bought a gift online to be delivered to my home but we broke up before the gift arrived

The size is wrong - way too big and baggy - it is the worst colour on me and I don’t like the stylr

I would like to go to a store and exchange for a different size / colour same item - or - something else entirely different

But I do not have the receipt or proof of purchase and we are not talking to each other

(backstory - he had a bit too much to drink and confessed to cheating which led to a break up which led to him blocking me everywhere - pretty sure he will not give me proof of purchase especially since it will appear I don’t like the gift)

I don’t have ebay, etsy or anything like that and the value is 300 so it is not something easy to sell even though it is brand new with tags, in the box etc

Will I make a fool of myself if I go to the store and try to exchange without proof of purchase?

Definitely keep it!
I wouldn't be making contact with a cheating waste of space.

@coffeesaveslives I think they meant as it's his money that bought the item the OP is not out of pocket. Personally I'd give it to a charity shop.

Ah, that makes sense lol.

Personally I'd profit off him if I could Grin

I think maybe opening a Vinted acct would be easier than exchanging but I was under the impression people are there for bargains?
I’d probably have to reduce the price a lot which is a shame as it is literally brand new with tags

Yeah, but you didn't pay anything for it. So you lose precisely zero.
Sorry about the cheater but on the bright side, he could have 'not' sent the gift yet, as it turns out he has and you broke up after.

Vinted is honestly so easy.

friskybivalves · 16/11/2024 19:15

Definitely take it back to the store and explain. They will be able to tell by scanning it that you have not stolen it - that someone has paid money for it and it has been through their systems. The worst that can happen is that you will be offered a credit note?

If they say they there is nothing they can do, at that point eBay it (likely to get a better price for it than on Vinted).

Morally, it is yours. It was a gift after all. Not an engagement ring in which case I think the position is different and I would not want the toxic legacy. It's a jacket fgs!

If he wanted it back, he knows where you are and could try to make the [futile] moral argument.

clary · 16/11/2024 19:20

I agree with those who say if you want to sell it on eBay and think it’s reasonable to do so (only you can know really) then it's pretty easy and it’s not something you have to 'have'. Just open an account. It’s also free to sell now. I would say a BNWT £300 jacket, especially if in a bigger size, will sell pretty easily. I would expect to get about £150 for that if it really is £300 (and not reduced in a sale or available with a discount). You could put it on an eBay auction with a starting price of £100.

Edited to add: plenty of jackets on eBay for £100-£300 – not everything on there is on for £2.50 yunno (just all my stuff haha)

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 16/11/2024 19:24

No OP, Vinted isn't just for selling things cheaply and buying bargains. Be sure to supply detailed information, measurements, and plenty of pictures.

If the item is still for sale at full price, be sure to take this into account along with any postage charges. I would probably price at 80-85% of original price.

Right

So if they scan the tag will they see his online account? So let’s say the store might offer to refund his money to the payment method used? So

Or if I get a credit note, this will go to his acct right?

I mean he will know I did not want to keep it

I just don’t want him to think it is a way to get back at him / get his attention

Despite the cheating I was willing to stay civil because he confessed and that was the right thing to do but since he blocked me everywhere now I want zero contact and don’t want him receiving notifications that will remind him of me

This isn’t necessarily true.

I worked in retail and this isn’t the case in all stores. What store is it from?

also in some stores it automatically goes back on to the original method of payment if they can track it.

It all depends on where it is from.

Which store?

different stores have different policies. Some will attach a “credit” back to the original account some will give you a gift voucher some won’t give you the time of day

TequilaNights · 16/11/2024 19:40

I've taken gifts back to stores even without the tags.
Usually given a store voucher or swap item.

pambeesleyhalpert · 16/11/2024 19:52

I would sell it on Vinted for half price. You get £150 and get rid of it. You haven't spent any money on it so not really your loss but you may as well get something out of it!

No - usually they would only refund to the payment method used originally if the purchaser were present with that credit or debit card.

Most retailers - are you prepared to say which store it is? - will either suggest you swap the jacket for the correct size if they have one in stock; possibly order one in for you if, say, they have it in the correct size but the wrong colour; or finally give you a physical credit note in the form of a plastic credit card-style store card that will probably expire in a year's time.

The system is unlikely to be able to trace it to an individual purchaser but will be able to tell that you (or anyone else) haven't just picked it up from a store and shoplifted it - that a transaction went through for it at full price/sale price (as relevant).

friskybivalves · 16/11/2024 21:36

Alternatively some retailers give you a blooming annoying till receipt flimsy thing that is your credit note. They are horribly easy to lose!

It's not your money

Edenmum2 · 16/11/2024 21:44

OP why aren't you telling us the store? People will actually be able to answer your questions if they know where the item came from

OK - well on the upside, Sezane clothes are covetable and you are likely to achieve a reasonably decent price on eBay (no seller's fees anymore) if you are well past the 14 day return or exchange limit.

You could also try sending them an email at  [email protected] to explain your predicament? I am sure that if you took a photo of the jacket and the label, they would come up with a solution.
