I can't upload it because my mum has it but there is a picture of me at about seven months old sitting up in an enormous Silver Cross pram on the edge of the cliffs in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. Ricky, the family German Shepherd is tied to the handle by his lead. There does not seem to be any brake applied to the pram wheels.

This delightful image was taken from some distance away. To be fair, it was taken a full six months before the landslip and my parents were very busy running the King's Bay Cliff Edge Hôtel.

I think they were trying to train me and Ricky to pull our weight in the family business by mushing, Canadian husky and sled style into the Undercliff to bank cheques and pay the butcher.

There's loads of others including close proximity to bonfires, fireworks, plenty of untethered horses.

Falconry for five year olds. Me grinning demonically at an owl sat on my arm.

As you can see I turned out fine. What's your's?

Oh I love your write up of our adventures! I feel there would have been a photo of both mums sat in brown stripy bras and dodgy perms to accompany the article.

and yes poor Peter and Margaret sticky fingers. Surely fingers…

MackintoshGalore · 16/11/2024 00:18

Oh my goodness, where to start?!
There's the frequent journeys sitting in the boot of the car with the boot wide open. Standing on top of moving cars 'car surfing'. Swimming down rivers with no adult supervision. Technical ice climbing routes without the right equipment. Driving the car around the farm tracks before my feet could really reach the pedals. Climbing over the tops of bridges rather than walking along them. Paddling in crocodile rivers. Playing with wild monkeys, and the list goes on ...
It was a rather fantastic childhood!

StSwithinsDay · 16/11/2024 00:21

I am trying to find the photo - my brother and I aged 3 and 2 at an actual chimpanzee's tea party in a zoo. Sitting at a table eating cake with chimps surrounding us dressed in clothes.

Just googled that and now really wish I hadn't!!

There's a picture of me at around 2 years old, sat on the sofa with a battery in my hand and another in my mouth like a lollipop 🙃

My friend has a baby photo of her on her christening day - so maybe 4-5 months old - she's propped up on some cushions and someone has put a lit fag in her hand.

God bless the 70s 😳

Oh that's shocking, but also made me laugh out loud 😆

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 16/11/2024 00:41

We were poor so photos were only for 'special occasions' and 'special occasions' were only 'special' with booze and fags. I don't think there's a picture of me in existence before I'm 20 without fags.

My favourite one is really a perspective thing though. I'm sitting on the couch next to my granny who is next to the plastic Christmas tree, she's tabbing away and the angle is crossed with a fairy light so it looks like she's setting the Christmas tree on fire. Happy days.

It's best that you know. All that 'Swimming with dolphins' malarkey. That is what they are really thinking about when they are pretending to smile, winking with one eye and going whistle whistle, click click.

Tiny little 3 year old me riding an elephant at the circus with five other tiny 3-4 year olds. Circa 1990.

Riding a pony {age 7} up Sheen Lane without a riding hat towards Sheen Gate {Richmond Park} also wearing summer sandals as it was hot.

Jeez- Hopefully juvenile chimps- once their balls drop they become really dangerous.

Me on holiday aged about 6, holding a lion cub.
Me aged about 18 months drinking some Guinness from a pint glass whilst balancing on a car bonnet.
Also, leaning over the barrier at Niagara Falls.

I was going in for the pint of Guinness but I was on my mum’s knee (or maybe that’s worse 🤔)

crumblingschools · 16/11/2024 01:40

Me sitting at the top of scaffolding reading a book. We were having an extension and I just climbed up to the top without telling anyone. Wouldn’t do it now as petrified of heights! I was probably about 6/7

Photo from summer holiday in Greece 4 adults and 2 kids (me and DB) crammed into Fiat 500. I was sitting on one of the adults lap in the backseat, DB was standing up with his head out of the sun roof. Alcohol was probably involved too. The 70s really were a different era of parenting

That was absolutely tragic.
Outright animal abuse. Dosing a Dolphin with LSD and having sex with him- keeping him in a tiny tank...He died soon after the woman left.

She was arrogant enough to say he died of a broken heart.
Asshole.

HollyKnight · 16/11/2024 02:14

There is one of me as a toddler minutes after dislocating my arm. I'm standing in the middle of the room, holding my arm, crying, looking straight at the camera. I don't understand it. Who sees an injured baby and decides to go get a camera to take a photo of that moment instead of comforting the baby??

The Jimmy Saviles of aquatic life! What a thought !

No photos but when my sister was 2 and I was just a baby (80s) we were on holiday in Padstow in an old coaching inn on the harbourside. According to family folklore, my 2 year old sister would lean outside of the upstairs window waving at people passing by. That was the same holiday when apparently our parents were in the restaurant and bar downstairs , having left us in the bedroom, were alerted by staff to the fact that my sister had gotten out of the room and fell down the stairs. Fortunately unhurt, but it shocks me that parents would leave their tiny children in hotel bedrooms unattended . Of course this was long before Madeline McCann.

DurinsBane · 16/11/2024 02:33

You were probably a lot safer with the dog tied to the pram, as the dog isn’t going to jump over the cliff is he?
why is the owl on your arm bad?

DurinsBane · 16/11/2024 02:43

BrotherViolence · 15/11/2024 23:35

Huge python or similar wrapped round my and my brother's necks on the Isle of Wight, aged about four. I'd always assumed it was a safe one - they're not constrictors are they? - but in retrospect maybe it wouldn't happen today.

Pythons are constrictors! We used to have them come into school and get put round our necks in the 90s (primary school)

MuffinCHeeler · 16/11/2024 02:47

There's a photo of me in my pram as a baby flying down a hill while my brother pretends to run after it. They used to tell me about it when we looked at the photos as a child, apparently they took me to the top of the hill and let go.

So she was the one sexually abusing the dolphin? I hope she rots in hell. Stupid wagon.

WhichEllie · 16/11/2024 03:44

There’s a picture of me when I was four or five with my arms all the way through a fence, my hands firmly clamped in the fur of a cheetah. It’s looking over its shoulder at me, clearly bemused.

Never gotten a straight answer as to why that was not only allowed, but photographed! 😂

sunsettosunrise · 16/11/2024 04:06

There is a picture of me aged about 10 with four other kids (including a teenage driver) crammed on to a quad bike that we were racing down the beach. Late 2000s New Zealand..tbf my parents didnt know, my mum was a helicopter mum.

BettyBardMacDonald · 16/11/2024 04:22

As a two-year-old sitting in the garden drinking from a can of beer.

@oakleaffy

Why ruin a light hearted thread with those heinous details? For fuck's sake!

I hope the thrill you got from posting that was worth the sorrow it's going to cost many of us.

Perhaps read the fucking room and have some consideration for others who are trying to enjoy a bit of escapism.
