I can't upload it because my mum has it but there is a picture of me at about seven months old sitting up in an enormous Silver Cross pram on the edge of the cliffs in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. Ricky, the family German Shepherd is tied to the handle by his lead. There does not seem to be any brake applied to the pram wheels.

This delightful image was taken from some distance away. To be fair, it was taken a full six months before the landslip and my parents were very busy running the King's Bay Cliff Edge Hôtel.

I think they were trying to train me and Ricky to pull our weight in the family business by mushing, Canadian husky and sled style into the Undercliff to bank cheques and pay the butcher.

There's loads of others including close proximity to bonfires, fireworks, plenty of untethered horses.

Falconry for five year olds. Me grinning demonically at an owl sat on my arm.

As you can see I turned out fine. What's your's?

My grandad dangling 3 year old me over a fence round pond whilst a swan pecks at my knee - I look fucking petrified and he is smiling the bastard.

Me & my brother sitting in the back of an old navy transit van with our thumbs up, which we were regularly driven around in by a different grandad 😂

I don't have a photo of it but vivid memories of my dad coming home from the beach without my two younger brothers, who were 3 and 6 at the time. They'd gone back to play at the holiday cottage up the road belonging to a nice fella my dad had got chatting to. (Luckily, he was ostensibly an actual nice fella, but BLOODY HELL. I'm only 36 so this was not that long ago.)

😯

My mum talks fondly of those early days with me, her newborn baby. She'd settle down in the armchair to breastfeed me. Once I was latched on, my dad would light her a fag, put it in her fingers and balance the ash tray on the chair arm. So as not to disrupt my feed. Proper parenting.

God, that's awful.

SofandaCox · 15/11/2024 22:58

Lots of photos of me asleep on the bar as baby, or underneath a table. Picture of me chugging a cider at about 5 years old. Some random drunk old man feeding my scampi fries. My parents likes the pub a lot!

MorettiForMargo · 15/11/2024 23:12

The only way I can describe it is - “3 year old Margo practising for her stripping career, partially clothed and looking uncannily like hooker version of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman”.

We’ve also got, “6 year old Margo sits astride a cannon in the poofiest puffball of a party dress, located on the edge of a cliff with an 80 foot drop into the Indian Ocean. She looks terrified due to the rabid dog attempting to snap at her feet.”

And “2 year old Margo balances precariously on the wall of the Penguin Enclosure at the Zoo. She cannot swim and the drop leads to the underwater viewing area.”

Last two entirely my father’s fault. First one, my mother who instead of saying “Say Cheese!”, said “Oi Margo, show us your bum!”

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 15/11/2024 23:13

There’s a picture of me when I was about 2, about to drink my dad’s beer. I don’t think anything of it, it was the early 90’s, I’m a product of my era….

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 15/11/2024 23:15

My best friends Nan let me and him go in the boot whilst she drove around the estate, (slowly) but still… one of my fave memories as we knew she shouldn’t have done it but it was fun as… I think my best friend has the photo of us in the boot 🤪

SlightlyGoneOff · 15/11/2024 23:21

There’s one of me aged two sitting in an unsecured súgán chair in the back of my father’s work Hiace van, surrounded by rusty machine parts, having just driven 40 miles at his usual pace of 70 mph.

Sonolanona · 15/11/2024 23:22

Pictures of me and all my mates crammed into the boot of an estate car on the way to a bowling alley aged 9.
Me on the parcel shelf of my Dad's car... a two seater was our family car!

And even my (terribly useless) father remembered taking me..aged 2 to visit a fried who ran a very famous racing stables...and let me wander into the stable of a notoriously tricky to handle Grand National winner... where I was found standing under the horse's belly. They thought I might be kicked to death and were bracing themselves to try and retrieve me, but the horse just looked slightly bemusedGrin

I was a child of the 7s..a true 'Gen X' kids and the freedom we had was unreal..and fabulous!

MorettiForMargo · 15/11/2024 23:24

Oh gosh another…”5 year old Margo at the Circus! She sits alone on a fully grown African Elephant wearing a flashing visor (Margo that is, not the elephant). To keep the Elephant company, there are two tigers sitting on podiums in either side, chained to a man and woman in Tarzan style costumes who feed the tigers cubes of meat to keep them happy. When the picture is taken, the handlers (who look suspiciously like The Speakmans) do a thumbs up with their non tethered hand. Margo does the same. With both hands. How is she staying on that Elephant?”

Margo repeated the exact same photo op 3 years later.

The following year, the Circus stopped using animals in performance. Margo was relieved. The souvenir photos were always a smelly and scary experience.

Also the Isle of Wight. The land health and safety forgot.

Me aged about 7 on the chairlifts. Flimsy rickety things heading down a cliffside with a safety bar that appears only for decoration rather than a useful purpose.

40 years later it seems the same chairlifts are still there 😱

Oh I had totally forgotten about those chairlifts! Went on them in about 1985. I would love to go on them again.

AliasGrace47 · 15/11/2024 23:29

Sam, that's interesting as to my mum in the 70s travelling in the boot was normal. Her severe asthma & eczema weren't really treated either, though in fairness probs bc there wasn't awareness that stuff like dog hair made it worse.

BibbityBobbityToo · 15/11/2024 23:31

(Back story -There's a huge age gap between me and my older sister. Her 17 year old boyfriend had a car with the back seats ripped out to accommodate a drum kit as he played in a band.)

There's a photo of me around 4 years old literally sitting on the floor in the back of a death trap emulsion painted (really!) car after being 'joyridden' to the beach for a day out with my sister and her 'cool' boyfriend.

To this day I am still horrified my Mother allowed me to rattle around in the back of car being driven by a cocky teenager who thought he was Nigell Mansell.

blackheartsgirl · 15/11/2024 23:34

There’s a photo of me somewhere aged 12 peering out of the back of a truck with a fellow stable friend which had just gone on a 30 mile journey to pick up a load of hay from a farm.. with us locked in the back having a brilliant time. This truck had gone down the motorway and along A roads and we’d journeyed in comfort in the way back sitting amongst the bales of hay.

this was in 1989.

Health and safety didn’t exist in those stables 😂.

BrotherViolence · 15/11/2024 23:35

Huge python or similar wrapped round my and my brother's necks on the Isle of Wight, aged about four. I'd always assumed it was a safe one - they're not constrictors are they? - but in retrospect maybe it wouldn't happen today.

MillyMichaelson · 15/11/2024 23:35

My friend has a baby photo of her on her christening day - so maybe 4-5 months old - she's propped up on some cushions and someone has put a lit fag in her hand.

God bless the 70s 😳

What is it with the Isle of Wight?

Me, about 10 months old on my nan's knee with a fag in my mouth and my nan laughing her head off. It wasn't lit in their defence but still

I thought the same thing reading this thread!

Vinotinto78 · 15/11/2024 23:41

Me. Age 2. Stood on a round, teak, dining table. I’m wearing a pretty dress, white knee-length socks whilst holding a pack of Embassy.

Well, yes, as a matter of fact, pythons are constrictors…

Oh, that's lovely. It's a beautiful photo really.

It was the era of all those women going to live with gorillas or trying to teach them sign language.

There was one poor girl who got more than she bargained for with Peter the dolphin. That didn’t end well.

Me sitting on the central reservation of a motorway. Admittedly it was just before they opened it so there was no traffic but even so I'm pretty sure we weren't meant to be wandering around on it or using it as a photo opportunity.
