Will ASDA go to the wall?

My nearest big supermarket is ASDA and because I no longer drive due to disability, it is convenient. I have shopped there since I moved here over 30 years ago (and even worked there for a couple of years while having caring responsibilities). But I went in today and the shelves are half empty there are so few staff about and there is no vibe or buzz about the place which I remember it definitely used to have. Is it just my local store or are all branches equally devoid of staff and stock?

I fucking love ASDA.
God, you lot are snobs dont pretend youve ever dared step foot in there without wiping your feet on the way out, fuck off to Waitrose Grin

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 15/11/2024 19:36

It's gone right down hill at my local one. Messy shelfs, empty shelf's etc. and the cafe is something else ! I waited like a lemon on Monday to be served and no one came it was like it had been deserted.

CeeJay81 · 15/11/2024 19:53

I never go in store to Asda as it's a long way away but they so deliver shopping here. I gave up with their's ages ago when they started giving rubbish substitutions and there were often many of them. Tesco on the other hand is brilliant and their home delivery is excellent.

I watched the programme last night but I didn't recognise it. Our Asda is great, busy and usually well stocked. No Tesco or Waitrose in reasonable distance not that I miss them. It is in a very affluent area though, I expect Tesco would be in like a shot if it closed. Let's face it Safeway looked secure once but went under.

Middlemarch123 · 15/11/2024 20:04

I prefer Asda to Tesco, switched from latter for online weekly delivery about six months ago, and find Asda cheaper. The delivery drivers are lovely and friendly. Tesco deliveries were often late and Asda have always turned up in the time slots. They’ve phoned before to say they are running early, is that ok, or would I like them to wait until booked time, which I think is very reasonable.
only concern is that their systems are frequently down, so if I don’t want any subs, they can’t process it. Last driver told me this was happening more and more and he was fed up with it, because some customers were giving him a hard time, when it wasn’t his fault. It is a faff because I then have to email them and request a refund.

other than that I have no problem with food or sell by dates.

Asda aren't going anywhere, they made an absolute fortune last year, over £1bn.
My Asda order last week was approx £140, there were no subs or unavailable items. The one in Wolverhampton is also very good (I arrange my sisters weekly online shop from there).
There are some empty shelves in every supermarket at the moment, there are obviously supply issues of certain items at the moment, but it seems to be affecting all supermarkets.
Most supermarkets will probably have already made job cuts, why pay staff to check out your items when they can get us to do it for free. There are already stores in the USA where you don't scan your shopping, you scan an app when you go in and somehow the store knows exactly what you have left with and charges you accordingly. Don't ask me how this works, but it definitely exists and I'm sure in the future we will have that set up here. It will certainly cut out any form of shop lifting.

I suspect people will still find ways to shoplift. Stolen phone , stolen card details or just leg it at the end with a declined payment. I do like the idea though.

caringcarer · 15/11/2024 20:07

I popped in to my local Asda today. It's a big one and they had loads of stock. I didn't go upstairs to look at clothing though.

CatherineDurrant · 15/11/2024 20:08

Big stock gaps have been evident in our local ASDA for the last month and the fresh produce standards have been low for a long time.

Most people I know only pop in for an item or two. I don't see how its sustainable.

Look, I am in no need of an excuse to shop at Waitrose instead, but it really isn’t on that scale of expensive. Also I did a Tesco/Asda price comparison on the same shop last year because I wanted a reason to shop at Tesco instead and Asda (which is nearer and has cheaper deliver/click and collect options) was marginally cheaper.

Ok, I might have been exaggerating a bit but In October 2024 Asda was more expensive than Tesco (only slightly)

Supermarket Average price for 62 items
Aldi £111.66
Lidl £112.33
Tesco £125.09
Asda £125.26

And Sainsburys only a few pennies more expensive than Asda!

I do very much appreciate Asda's £1 kids meals in the Cafe - all day everyday with no need to buy an adult meal. A drink, piece of fruit and choice of meal from a decent menu - great value. It's one of the reasons I still sometimes shop there.

They will if they don’t sort out their online delivery system which was down for over a week recently

They were hacked. It wasn't exactly their fault.

hairbearbunches · 15/11/2024 20:36

Don't know if this has already been mentioned, haven't read the whole thread...

Asda's demise was nailed on when the Issa brothers bought it using a leveraged debt buyout. They loaded it with unsustainable debt. After that, it's just a matter of time. It ought to be illegal to do this to companies. Too many British companies have been subjected to this legalised theft and all of them have gone to the wall as a result.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/11/2024 20:37

My local Asda superstore is fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh, well that’s good news - I will tell my husband they are now more expensive than Tesco and get our online shop there instead! Aldi is definitely a lot cheaper. Not sure I could do a weekly shop there. An emergency online click and collect is what I need usually!

The Asda cafe was bloody great, then they put a McDonalds in at ours 😕

AlwaysGinPlease · 15/11/2024 20:45

Chavsda. Always been awful.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 15/11/2024 20:48

There was a programme about Asda the other nt saying it has gone downhill.

Joewickscarpet · 15/11/2024 21:06

I love Asda usually, my delivery drivers are great and there are hardly any substitutions, however they must be twiddling with their app and website cos it just randomly shut me out this week. I couldn't get through to anyone who could realistically help me, and only managed to get access back by changing my password .

bamboosockmonster · 15/11/2024 21:08

went earlier this week. was dreadful! and already playing constant bloody christmas music - mid November FFS. Awful experience.

They've been disentangling their software from Walmart a mammoth task. The younger brother has sold his shares to TDR Capital to concentrate on another business.

It will take time to recover. I wouldn't be risking an online shop this Christmas though

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 21:16

I hope so it's a horrible supermarket with equally horrible own brand food! It's without a doubt the absolute worst quality after Lidl.

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 21:16

JackJarvisEsq · 15/11/2024 16:51

Our local one (just outside Glasgow) is a midden

it’s full of puddles, barely any stock and one of the doors doesn’t work

if it wasn’t my nearest and super handy for quick grabs I don’t have the time to go elsewhere for I just wouldn’t bother

They sold it ages ago

SalsaLights · 15/11/2024 21:16

I hope they recover. Mine is always busy and stock levels are usually pretty good. But the store is very tired and tatty looking and desperately needs a refurb. I feel sorry for the staff as they always seem to be trying to deter shoplifters, who seem to be untouchable. It must be very demoralising to have to constantly deal with such brazen theft.

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 21:17

Onthesideofthespiders · 15/11/2024 16:53

Sorry… you think supermarkets have a “buzz” about them?

This baffled me as well 😵‍💫

Joewickscarpet · 15/11/2024 21:26

@justasking111 😯, fooook, too late already got me crimbo slot booked, looks like we might be having freezer bits, fingers crossed 😂

I haven’t been into an Asda store for a few months so not sure how much stock they have 🤷‍♀️

Best post ever 😂
