Why did Tesco do this and did anyone else get it?

Tesco last week sent me £30 off my next shop if I spent £185 and it was within the next 4 weeks.

Why did they do this?

They know I often spend over this so they would know I would easily be able to use it.

I had spent a small fortune already this month but I just did another shop and bought freezer stuff / laundry /toilet rolls etc

So my question is - did anyone else get this and why did Tesco do it. I mean I'm already a customer so what's their angle?

I've shopped there for years and years.

Presumably because their biggest profiting time of year is upon us and they want you to do your big christmas shop with them?

Not complaining of course.

Nope - but I have in the past had some vouchers similar towards Xmas time but they tend to be a % rather than a value.

As an aside, are you a club card plus member? It’s £7.99 a month but you get 10% off 2 shops up to a value of £200 (so a saving of potentially £40 for an £8 outlay). I think I will join as my spends are like yours - £180 a week if I add in all the non perishables from the prior week too.

I suppose they don't know that you exclusively shop with them. I live practically next door to a Tesco but I also shop in Lidl, Aldi, M&S, Asda, even Morrisons on occasion! An offer like this would encourage me to do a big shop in the one place rather than what I usually do which is getting the deli stuff from one place, bread from another, go to my local grocers for the veg etc.

Inthedeep · 12/11/2024 20:35

I shop pretty equally between Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Sainsbury’s and Waitrose often used to give me money off my next shop, even though I shopped with them regularly (neither seem to now though unfortunately). Tesco sent me a £9 off a £60 shop last week, along with two further vouchers for £6 off a £60 shop to be used on certain weeks. It’s a good spinner for them as it pretty much guarantees I’ll use them for my next shops (and spend a lot more than £60 each time).

Recipients will be selected by an algorithm or maybe everyone who's spent a particular amount in a given period.

I imagine they'll have calculated that a) some people might be tempted to do a special Christmas shop at Waitrose or M&S so it's to keep those customers loyal and b) it encourages people to spend more/treat themselves, so Tesco actually make the £30 back plus.

RedSoloCup · 12/11/2024 20:51

Yep! I shop there weekly, I normally spend 100-130 and got an £18 off £120.
Not complaining 😀

For whatever reason, the big data crunching algorithms running in the background have decided that you saving £30 now will earn them more money in the long run. Maybe it's as simple as a new Lidl opening down the road and they're worried you're going to jump ship. Maybe they've noticed that you've spent slightly less with them lately, so they want to earn some goodwill. Maybe on average you only spend £130 while in there, so they're trying to entice you into spending more, but offsetting it with a discount, so that spending £185 becomes your new normal.

It could be any one of a million things, but the overall answer is that they're taking an educated guess that giving you this discount will make them more money.

PeaceOutGirlScout · 12/11/2024 20:56

To keep you as a customer. They're much more than Aldi on a lot of stuff so you could easily lose you to them on certain items. Now you'll shop there instead and you'll have good thoughts about them if you were never going elsewhere.

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 20:59

Have you never had vouchers before ? I've been getting them for about 2 decades.

wotsitallfor · 12/11/2024 21:06

I got £25 off if I spend £170, usually spend £120-140 so might use it if I get some Christmas booze etc.

BobnLen · 12/11/2024 21:06

I shop online and recently defected to Ocado as my Tesco delivery pass run out and Ocado gave me lots of offers and free 6 months pass. I got a email from Tesco for £20 off £100 which is valid for about 4 weeks, I will see if there is a cheap delivery slot and use it, it's quite useful just before Christmas. I will probably go back to Tesco when Ocado pass runs out any as I prefer it.

Fleasies · 12/11/2024 21:06

Tesco send DP and I vouchers for money off periodically - generally when we’ve not been shopping there very often. To encourage them to do this more often, I use one of our cards for a while till they’ve sent some vouchers, then swap to the other. This encourages Tesco to keep offering a similar percentage off a lower spend. Some arrived for both of us this morning: £7 off a £50 spend, and £9 off a £60 spend and a further 2 weeks of savings at a lower rate.

When I use them, I use scan and shop to make spend just enough to get the money off and go back the next 2 weeks to get money off then too.

Morrisons offered me £6 off last week. We shop at a lot of different places so this doesn’t cause us any issues to swap around and keep the cycle going.

potatocakesinprogress · 12/11/2024 21:15

Is this a serious question?

You'd already spent a "small fortune" and weren't intending to buy anything else soon and they've made you place another order of £200.

That's what they gained out of it.

They add an extra cost to every single item on an online shop and they also charge you a delivery fee.

SassyLimeHelper · 12/11/2024 21:17

I got £10 off a £60 shop - the voucher can be used 3 times before 1st Dec. I don't shop there very often, but will likely pick up some Christmas clothes, gift sets and cupboard/freezer items because of this

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 12/11/2024 21:33

Are these the vouchers that appear in your app? Or do you get them or a receipt or email?
I'm not getting any!

Snorlaxo · 12/11/2024 21:39

I order from Tesco weekly and get crappy coupons like 10% off finest ready meals or 50p off fresh tomatoes.

I think that they want to retain you as a customer. November/December is super important for supermarket revenue and they don’t want you to go somewhere else (say Aldi ) because it’s cheaper. Enjoy your voucher

evtheria · 12/11/2024 21:39

I've not got anything 😭 been reading about everyone getting money off vouchers and I'm fuming hahah

Mine appear in the app. Check your settings so they send you vouchers which I think are considered marketing.

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 12/11/2024 21:44

Thanks @Snorlaxo
I've updated my marketing settings. I was only getting the 10% off bacon ones 😂 so hopefully I'll get some better ones now!

BambALamb · 12/11/2024 21:51

I didn’t receive any vouchers but spend about £500 a month at Tesco! Now I feel like I should boycott them out of protest 😡

Is that 10% off two shops per month? If so I think I will sign up for that. Like you say that saves £32 per month. Thanks for posting!

Mine was a code in an email about a week ago for an online or C&C shop, my previous shops have mainly been online.

Yes you’ve got it right as far as I can see. 10% off 2 shops per calendar month, maximum £200 per spend so I was planning on moving all the non-perishables from weeks one and three and using the 10% on weeks 2 and 4. It makes sense to me with good planning plus some other things like F&f and baby things are always 10% extra off. Worth looking it up!
