Why did Tesco do this and did anyone else get it?

IHateClothesShopping · 12/11/2024 20:26

Tesco last week sent me £30 off my next shop if I spent £185 and it was within the next 4 weeks.

Why did they do this?

They know I often spend over this so they would know I would easily be able to use it.

I had spent a small fortune already this month but I just did another shop and bought freezer stuff / laundry /toilet rolls etc

So my question is - did anyone else get this and why did Tesco do it. I mean I'm already a customer so what's their angle?

I've shopped there for years and years.

I suppose they don't know that you exclusively shop with them. I live practically next door to a Tesco but I also shop in Lidl, Aldi, M&S, Asda, even Morrisons on occasion! An offer like this would encourage me to do a big shop in the one place rather than what I usually do which is getting the deli stuff from one place, bread from another, go to my local grocers for the veg etc.

I don't shop with them exclusively. I use waitrose too. Often Tesco are out of stock with things so I get a waitrose shop too. My shopping bill is horrendous.

Surely Tesco can't know that I use waitrose too? Or do they.

I suppose I do get an odd month when mostly use Waitrose but that is quite rare. It mostly half and half or more Tesco than Waitrose.

I shop pretty equally between Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Sainsbury’s and Waitrose often used to give me money off my next shop, even though I shopped with them regularly (neither seem to now though unfortunately). Tesco sent me a £9 off a £60 shop last week, along with two further vouchers for £6 off a £60 shop to be used on certain weeks. It’s a good spinner for them as it pretty much guarantees I’ll use them for my next shops (and spend a lot more than £60 each time).

Yes so maybe it's just that. They have worked out I am using another supermarket sometimes and they are trying to make me loyal to them.

They probably know you split your shop if you don’t buy basics eg loo roll, toothpaste from them. They won’t know it’s Waitrose (but might guess based on location ) but the discount voucher might make you buy “loo roll” from them instead.

Recipients will be selected by an algorithm or maybe everyone who's spent a particular amount in a given period.

I imagine they'll have calculated that a) some people might be tempted to do a special Christmas shop at Waitrose or M&S so it's to keep those customers loyal and b) it encourages people to spend more/treat themselves, so Tesco actually make the £30 back plus.

Interesting. My shopping bill has been particularly high recently with lots of purchases of smoked salmon and venison. However that is not that unusual as it used to be pretty high but with steak and lamb (changed to be more low fat).

(I'm frugal in lots of areas but food is my downfall)

Yep! I shop there weekly, I normally spend 100-130 and got an £18 off £120.
Not complaining 😀

Ah right. So they are obviously sending them out to various customers. Not just me. Still doesn't explain why though.

For whatever reason, the big data crunching algorithms running in the background have decided that you saving £30 now will earn them more money in the long run. Maybe it's as simple as a new Lidl opening down the road and they're worried you're going to jump ship. Maybe they've noticed that you've spent slightly less with them lately, so they want to earn some goodwill. Maybe on average you only spend £130 while in there, so they're trying to entice you into spending more, but offsetting it with a discount, so that spending £185 becomes your new normal.

It could be any one of a million things, but the overall answer is that they're taking an educated guess that giving you this discount will make them more money.

I guess you are right. Interesting.

@IHateClothesShopping I had exactly the same voucher as you, £30 off a shop of £185.

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 20:59

Have you never had vouchers before ? I've been getting them for about 2 decades.

I get clubcard vouchers and in the past I think I might have had some freebies. Must have been a long, long time ago though cos I can't remember

Wish I could work out what causes it so I can get more!

Is this a serious question?

You'd already spent a "small fortune" and weren't intending to buy anything else soon and they've made you place another order of £200.

That's what they gained out of it.

They add an extra cost to every single item on an online shop and they also charge you a delivery fee.

Yes but I bought stuff I would have bought anyway ie I just stocked up on toilet rolls, laundry stuff etc and put them aside.

No charge for delivery either as I click and collect in the free slots 2-3 in the afternoon.

Are these the vouchers that appear in your app? Or do you get them or a receipt or email?
I'm not getting any!

I just got an email saying have a £30 voucher off your next shop of £185 or more as long as you do it before x date. Then it gave me a code to use at the checkout.

Mine appear in the app. Check your settings so they send you vouchers which I think are considered marketing.

Oh my Lord, years of a weekly home delivery order and I never knew! Thank you! Now opted in. Our local store used to send me goodies like yogurts for the kids with a lovely handwritten note but that stopped years ago.

Thanks @Snorlaxo
I've updated my marketing settings. I was only getting the 10% off bacon ones 😂 so hopefully I'll get some better ones now!

I am already a yes for marketing, spend a fortune there and just got 10% off pet products, now I do have a cat but he needs special food so I don't buy anything for him from Tesco 🤷‍♀️

IHateClothesShopping · 12/11/2024 22:32

thanks for posting everyone. Seems a few people have had this offer so not just me. Hope those who have not got it, are next on the list for their offers.

Just goes to show how much data analysis is going on behind the scenes.

i only got £18 but happy with that £120 spend

Dontwearmysocks · 12/11/2024 22:38

Mykittensmittens · 12/11/2024 20:31

Nope - but I have in the past had some vouchers similar towards Xmas time but they tend to be a % rather than a value.

As an aside, are you a club card plus member? It’s £7.99 a month but you get 10% off 2 shops up to a value of £200 (so a saving of potentially £40 for an £8 outlay). I think I will join as my spends are like yours - £180 a week if I add in all the non perishables from the prior week too.

I joined this and it’s been fab - also works in attacks favour as I’m far less likely to flirt with the e competition!

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2024 22:40

Get it how? Email? I didn't get anything 😩.
I imagine despite you being a regular customer they want to ensure you stay that way! Lucky you.

I didn't spend an extra £200 though. Next month I won't need to buy a bunch of stuff so my shop will be £200 less. Thus I am still saving the £30

Not sure how you think it cost them nothing.

If I sign up to the loyalty scheme and spend same as always and save £32 per month surely that is good for me, not them.

Happy to be their 'ideal customer' if they keep sending me money off.

I got £25 off if I spend £170, usually spend £120-140 so might use it if I get some Christmas booze etc.

How did you get the offer?

Was it by email or in the post?

hot2trotter · 12/11/2024 22:55

I have never received anything like that and I shop with Tesco online every week, between £120 to £160 each time.

TheShellBeach · 12/11/2024 23:10

Wow.
I've just updated my settings and subscribed to Clubcard Plus.

Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe you should shop elsewhere for a month or two and see if they lure you back with vouchers.

I get sent discount vouchers from Sainsbury’s and Ocado because I haven’t shopped with them for years and last time I shopped with them was before delivery subscriptions.

How did you get the vouchers? In the post?

Online nearly always. Do click and collect rather than delivery as I live close to store and some slots are free. Got an email with a code to use at checkout.
