Tooth extraction x2 today, eating struggle but need to for medication

Oucht · 12/11/2024 17:16

I had my two last molars on my top right removed this morning. Both cut into pieces before the pushing, cracking and pulling started.

I am on several medications - Gabapentin and Lamotrigine that I have to take 3x a day and it has to be with food. I've not taken the midday dose as it was only 1 hour post extraction but if I avoid more I am at risk of seizures.

What's the best thing to eat? I tried a mouthful of yoghurt not long ago and it felt like I was just filling the holes. I don't want to end up with 2 dry sockets.

Soup is a good option. Or mashed potato (easy to keep it on the left side of your mouth).

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 12/11/2024 17:22

Thick milkshake. I had the same issue with medication after a tooth extraction and the pharmacist said you really only need to line the stomach with something, as thick as possible. Not ideal in the long haul but for a few days it’ll be fine.

No!! Straws are BAD! The suction can increase the risk of dry socket. Straws definitely to be avoided.

Edited: poster removed the reference to use a straw in the post I've quoted but think it's probably useful to keep the anti-straw message here.

@HundredMilesAnHour yeah I’ve just realised my error and edited. I meant to put spoon but I’m just off a bank of night shifts and not with it yet Blush

Oucht · 12/11/2024 17:30

Thank you. Typically I have a food shop coming tonight and I didn't even think about what I could and couldn't eat and haven't bought anything remotely soft enough.
Unfortunately due to a bladder condition that is flared by a lot of foods means soup is off the table and milkshakes unless I make them myself.. why didn't I order icecream!?

Mashed egg? Feel better soon x

Oucht · 12/11/2024 17:46

Eggs are my nemesis.. not in any way shape or form can I put them near my mouth! The smell makes me gag.

Rice pudding, custard, soggy cereal, mashed potato, well cooked pasta.

Im due a tooth out tomorrow although that’s not what my appointment is booked for but almost certainly after having two root canal appointment's which should have worked but has definitely failed.

I have soup in the cupboard but I also have Dahl (lentil and chickpea) pouches in the cupboard which I think as long as I take it slowly and make sure stays on the other side will be ok to eat with little rice if I feel I can manage.

fellow egg hater here 🤢

I've a feeling lentils and rice are a no go after an extraction as they can slip in the hole and get stuck...

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/11/2024 18:09

I had a tooth out a month ago. Cold rice pudding from a tin was a life saver for me on the first two days . Porridge for breakfast and soft bread soaked in soup for lunch. Risotto for dinner. Salt wash after each meal.

Fink · 12/11/2024 18:16

You don't need to take them with food as such, it's just that the risk of digestive side effects is lessened by taking them with food. Things like stomach pain, constipation/ diarrhoea etc. Not serious side effects. So if you can't eat, you can still safely take your medication, especially if you've been on the current doses for a while and your body is used to them. The worst that will happen is some minor side effects, whereas the risk of not taking them is more serious.

Obviously if there's things you can eat, great. But if not, it is fine to take both of those without food.

ZingyGoldTraybake · 12/11/2024 18:20

Limited but

ready made mash
soups
choc mousses
yoghurt
any soft dessert like cheesecake

slop basically, no sucking

VinnieVanLowe · 12/11/2024 18:25

I had 2 teeth out last year. All I could manage for a few days was very mushy weetabix.
On the bright side I did lose some weight !

Ginkypig · 12/11/2024 18:59

I meant to add if you really find you can’t eat have a glass of milk before you take your meds it should help to line your stomach.

PeanutCat1 · 13/11/2024 15:52

My dad had to have quite a few teeth removed and his dentist recommended snacking on smooth peanut butter as It's high in calories and also contains a good amount of protein so that might be worth a try.

How did your appointment go?

I'm living on jacket potato, mashed potato, yoghurt and bought some icecream!

Haha, the dental diet! I know it well. In 3 years I have had 12 teeth.

Thank you. I have taken them on just milk before and it's tough on my body. I also take oromorph, tramadol, amitriptyline and mirabegron. Those with the gabapentin and lamotrigine take a toll.

Following for tips as having an extraction early next year. Was it awful? I am beyond scared and considering cancelling as not actually in pain, but have a cavity in a wisdom tooth which they can't fill so I know I will be in pain one day????

I'm living on jacket potato, mashed potato, yoghurt and bought some icecream!

Aw thanks for asking, I really appreciate it! I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself so you have cheered me up 😉
I’m ok I suppose it went how I thought it would and I did get it out.

like the last two appointments half my face has swollen up again so I’m feeling pretty miserable and look a bit of a state. Pain not too bad but I’m getting pain going right up in to my ear so I’ve got pretty bad earache and obviously jaw is sore Even with paracetamol. It’ll be fine though it’ll settle. I’m managing it ok and know it’s to be expected.

Had a tin of soup last night, cauliflower cheese soup! I’d never heard of it but I don’t normally buy tinned soup so maybe I’m just not down with the flavours these days lol. It was actually quite nice, just like blended cauliflower cheese

dentist said I should be able to eat ok as long as I am careful and avoid very chewy or hard foods (drips etc) so I’m going to try the dhal tonight I think and as long as I don’t wolf it down and avoid that side it should be ok. apart from the tin of soup last iv not fancied anything today. The earach has made me feel a bit sick I think.

i have started the salt rinsing today like she suggested obviously carefully to not knock the clot out.

how are you @Oucht you have had two out so it’s twice as bad for you! You deserve ice cream so have as much as you want you’ll be back in solids soon and won’t want it by then!

No don’t cancel. Iv had quite a lot out over the years and extractions aren’t any worse than a filling. Personally I hated getting root canal so yesterday’s extraction was actually an easier appointment for me.

its not that nice getting the anaesthetic injected, it’s a bit stingy but totally manageable.

it’s never going to be a walk on the beach but it’s better than waiting until pain and other issues set in so don’t leave it you will be fine.

Boomer55 · 14/11/2024 17:04

Soup, mashed potato, or even milk softened cereal

It's not awful at all. I mean, it's not a party but you will be fine. They numb you up and then off they go. Some dentists just twist and pull, mine cut the teeth in half and then removed them.
The worst bit is the pressure when they push the tooth up to loosen it but it's just pressure and a few crackling noises.

I have had 12 extractions now.

Glad that you are okay. The achey feeling will take a while to go. If you have ibuprofen, take it. It's anti inflammatory which will help and it's safe with paracetamol too.

DO NOT EAT RICE!!!! Trust me.. a grain of rice in the hole... not good. I've had 12 extractions and I made the rice mistake once... never again.

I have a condition also known as suicide disease that affects the nerves in the face making it feel like the worst toothache in the world but with no tooth damage.
I lost most of my back teeth chasing the pain with a dentist that I left earlier this year. The two I had out Tuesday needed to go with actual problems.
