Sodastream for fizzy water?

Icanttakethisanymore · 12/11/2024 17:11

I am partial to fizzy water. I prefer wine (fizzy or otherwise) but sadly I can't drink that every night and a fizzy water softens the blow to some extent. The plastic bottles make me feel bad though and I've wondered if a sodastream might be a good option. Does anyone have one?? They were a bit of a thing in the 90's I recall.

My DP make soda water with one, it works fine.

You could go full-on retro and get a soda syphon? Less bulky.

eurochick · 12/11/2024 17:16

Yes, we have one. Or rather had one. It died after a few years of very regular use. We have replaced it with another brand that still uses the sodastream canisters. I drink a lot of sparkling water and thing it's great.

Oooo - what brand did you get? Do you prefer it to your old sodastream?

It's a Philips. A bit neater looking than my old sodastream. There are a couple of posh brands now but they all do the same thing. Some look better on the kitchen counter than others.

Another2Cats · 12/11/2024 17:21

I have some friends in Germany. It's very popular there for sparkling water.

eurochick · 12/11/2024 17:22

I think it's this one

We have one, use it every day.

Jemimapuddleduk · 12/11/2024 17:23

Yes we use a soda stream to only make fizzy water, it’s brilliant and has lots of use.

DaftyLass · 12/11/2024 17:24

We use ours all the time, I make my own syrups, plus but ones

DaftyLass · 12/11/2024 17:24

I make a lovely virgin lime mojito

SquigglePigs · 12/11/2024 17:24

We've had one for a few years and use it every day. I love it and definitely eases the guilt over plastic waste!

I find a soda and lime works brilliantly for that. A splash of lime cordial in the bottom and then fill up with soda water (if you want to make soda water at home, it's just fizzy water with a small amount of bicarb added)

ExquisiteIyDesigned · 12/11/2024 17:29

We use ours all the time, you might get a Black Friday deal if you shop around at this time of year.

WellyBellyBoo · 12/11/2024 17:30

Yes, we use it loads. Still going strong after more than 5 years. The gas isn't cheap but it does reduce plastic.

Davros · 12/11/2024 17:33

We've had one for years and use it all the time. Lots of my friends have them. I will never buy bottled water unless I'm desperate

Rubberducksallround · 12/11/2024 17:37

I have a Sodastream Art and I love it. I like the handle better than the push button, makes me feel more fancy 🤣. They look to be on offer on Amazon for Black Friday too.
I take the empty gas canister to The Range and you get money off the full one, it works out about £13 for each new canister, and I think they last ages.
They only came with big bottles though, I bought some of the smaller bottles for taking out and about with me, and I use them loads

I don't drink white wine but like you I love lime cordial ( Roses) and soda water. I use mine most days .

I've been thinking exactly the same but I must admit I'm a bit put off by how expensive it might be to get the gas canisters. I buy the big bottles of sparkling water for 80p a go but I really can't justify buying all those plastic bottles any more. It's just making me feel too guilty.

Those of you with a Sodastream or equivalent, how much would you say it works out at per litre (after you've bought the actual machine)?

MadBlack · 12/11/2024 17:49

I have one of these, its used everyday and it takes sodastream cartridges.

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/11/2024 17:49

Ours gets used every day , it's an Aarke which I bought in a sale and is for water only. Huge reduction in use of plastic but probably not much difference in cost to bought water. I don't suppose it makes much of a difference which one you buy as the water will be your local water. Our neighbour gets the canisters delivered from Lakeland I think , I swap them out at a local shop that I am trying to use .

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 12/11/2024 17:53

I have one and use it several times a day just for fizzy water. Look into the cylinder subscription deal. They post them so it’s easier than taking them into a shop to exchange.

Try your local Polish shop for syrups.

I do about a litre of water a day. I paid for 12 months of cylinders up front for £120. One cylinder lasts about a month.
So about £10 a month for about 30 litres. However for me it’s not using the disposable bottles that is more important.

deviantfeline · 12/11/2024 18:02

They are in every household in NZ!
We use ours everyday.
Gas canisters here are refillable at the local supermarket or via post with SS. They charge quite a bit for the canister and gas at first but then they do a bottle swap and it's about £12. That lasts ages. Maybe two months of twice daily fizzes?

Caspianberg · 12/11/2024 18:02

We have the Aarke also. Had it about 5 years and wouldn’t be without it.
we just exchange canisters at our regular supermarket.
I don’t find the canisters expensive, they make around 60 litres of water. No plastic waste or carrying heavy water.

We just add a regular syrup or cordial like a lemon or raspberry, or elderflower if we want something not just water in summer

reluctantbrit · 12/11/2024 18:07

We have a different brand than Soda Stream and use ours every day. I do think they are slightly more expensive than buying bottled water but I don't have the plastic mountain for recycling.

I also found that the 2l bottles don't hold the fizz very well so I felt it was false economy as the fizzier brands are more expensive.
