They're particularly shit when you live in an old cottage in a rural area...

Why do you care? Are you married to a smart meter or something? You're taking the smart meter bashing so personally. So odd! 😆

Why do YOU care if people call them shite (which they are!)

Not at all, I just enjoy arguing with people who spout rubbish, dressed up as facts.

I can see that you like arguing about smart meters. And spouting nonsense about them. 90% or more of your posts since you joined are about smart meters. It's weird how obsessed you are - and how desperate you are to insist they're amazing.

Fact is they are fucking shit.

And it's been confirmed OFFICIALLY this week!

Is that why you're so angry and salty?! 😆

I’m not insisting they’re amazing, I’m pushing back against the misinformation about them, like they send wrong readings, or can’t save you money. They’ve saved me hundreds of pounds, so why would I agree with you that they’re fucking shit? That’s plain stupid.

Yeah I live in a rural area, and some 25 or so people/families in my village have had smart meters and said they are a pile of shit. THEY DO NOT WORK!

Biggest waste of time ever. Colossal waste of time and money. Imagine championing and supporting these pointless pieces of crap?! 😆

Who said it was for no reason ?

Also - and this is probably a really good way to live your life - it's best not to assume things will be tomorrow like they are today. Because "events, dear boy, events".

Now whether or not that is a reasonable, or compelling reason for distrust of the Battle For Smart Meters is up for debate (which we seem to be having 😀). But I wouldn't ascribe it a non-zero probability of happening.

There are probably people who have declined smart meters because they don't come in Farrow & Ball colours.

But your power can still be switched off without a smart meter.

But, it's a lot easier for your energy company to disconnect you if you have smart meters. (Than it is if you have conventional meters/credit meters)

What a weird turn this thread has taken!

It's hardly fact that they are 'shit'. For some people they don't work properly and that's rubbish. The infrastructure needs work. But for 99% of people, a 'broken' smart meter is a smart meter that doesn't send readings and they just have to send them manually. Like they were doing before. If you don't care about smart tariffs or any of those things then having a smart meter won't really change anything. Either it 'works', so you don't have to do meter reads, or it doesn't and you read the meter manually just like now.

But for the many people who do have working ones, there's the potential to save a lot of money. What is fact that I have paid less per unit of energy than anyone with a traditional meter for the last year because I'm on a special smart meter tariff. You can debate whether those tariffs are morally right or whether you agree with time of use tariffs or whatever all day long, but the fact is that I have saved hundreds of pounds over someone without a smart meter, so I'm definitely not going to say mine is shit while I'm quids in because of it.

Anyway at the end of the day, they aren't making traditional meter replacements as a matter of course now, they're old technology like analogue TVs and all that jazz and everyone will eventually have one whether they like it or not, so no point getting worked up about it.

Edited

Your energy company can't just disconnect you by flipping a switch. Why would they want to anyway? It seems such a weird thing to be paranoid about.

Besides, the DNO can turn off your energy if they so desired. That would be more likely than the energy companies doing it!

I didn't say they CAN disconnect you at the flip of a switch. You made that bit up.

But they CAN disconnect you much easier if you have smart meters, FACT.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 12/11/2024 22:48

And @doodleschnoodle before they replace everyone's conventional meters with smart ones, they need to work on making smart meters a lot less shit and a lot more reliable. They have had 12-13 years to get smart meters right, and they are as unreliable and as crap NOW as they day they were rolled out.

As it stands, smart meters will NEVER replace conventional meters 100%.

But why do you think your energy company would want to disconnect you? They want your custom to make money! I don't understand this way of thinking.

If people think "the government" would want to disconnect us, again, that could be done through the DNO much quicker, regardless of what meter you have. Not having a smart meter wouldn't protect you from it!

Perfectlystill · 12/11/2024 22:55

We have refused one for years and I have no intention of changing.

NetZeroZealot · 12/11/2024 23:04

The Panorama was interesting.
Obviously they work fine for most people.
I like my smart meter which I’ve had for a couple of years. It did go wrong once and we basically got free electricity for about 3 months!
And I have a strange set up at home so I can’t see my usage instantly but I can still see it day by day. Huge spike when I plug the car in and I’m going to switch to an EV tariff which will save a lot of money.

SerendipityJane · 13/11/2024 10:41

The government spends an enormous amount of money on the NHS, roads, railways, water supplies, schools etc. It pushes them pretty hard too. Are they not for our benefit either?

Only after they benefit various big corporations shareholders and executives first.

Why would an energy company want to disconnect anyone ?

Yet it happens.
