I slipped over on the path today ..

I cut myself and have some bruising. I'm feeling really upset about it. I slipped on wet leaves and fell backwards. I hid my injuries (the bleeding) from the people who helped me, Said I was OK, hobbled to the shop to get what I was on my way to get, hobbled back to the car and cried.

I'm 52

I'm not sure why I am feeling so sorry for myself 😪

Hope you're not too sore. Maybe a long bath?

Solidarity - I fell over backwards at 37 weeks pregnant and broke my elbow when I put my arm out behind me. And the real kicker was that the reason I fell over was that I slipped in horse poo. Which I then also fell in. Wonderful times.

Billybagpuss · 10/11/2024 20:25

Been there done that, be grateful we’re still of an age where we ‘fell over’ rather than the infinitely more serious ‘had a fall’. Have yourself a bath, with a glass of gin/tea and I hope you feel better in the morning.

AuditAngel · 10/11/2024 20:25

I slipped getting into the bath 3 years ago aged 52, had some amazing bruises. The main one was the inside of my thigh, it had a huge lump which took a year to go.

AuditAngel · 10/11/2024 20:26

And get yourself some arnica to help with the bruising

JosieRay · 10/11/2024 20:29

Oh poor you! It’s a shock when you fall over and there’s something in us that wants to say we’re ok even if we’re not. I’m a retired teacher and had an embarrassing fall at school in front of a playground of parents and children. I got up and pretended that I was fine and tried to joke it off, but like you, went and cried (in the toilets) as soon as I could!
Definitely have a hot bath and expect to feel achy tomorrow…we don’t bounce back so quickly as children. x

Fallinglady · 10/11/2024 20:32

@Stirrednshaken omgoodness, that must have been horrific.

It's horrible falling over. It feels embarrassing, yet it shouldn't.

Treat yourself gently; it's a shock to the system.

Pashazade · 10/11/2024 20:33

It's always such a horrible shock, and you feel embarrassed which is daft and then it's painful. Your mind is processing lots of different things all in one go. I tripped and went full length in the street a few years ago. What annoyed me more was no bugger stopped to help!
But nice long bath and you'll feel better albeit stiff in the morning.

@Stirrednshaken omgoodness, that must have been horrific.

It definitely left A and E confused - they thought I was looking for maternity and maternity wanted to know what the hell I was doing in a cast!

bamboosockmonster · 10/11/2024 20:36

hope you feel better soon OP! It's not nice. I fell over in the street a couple of weeks ago (couldn't walk properly for a few days after) and to add insult to injury a nasty woman laughed at me! :(

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2024 20:48

Oh you poor thing
I have fallen a few times and even if I am not badly hurt I find it very upsetting - I think because my Mum fell a few times in her early 70's (I am not there yet) and it turned out she wasn'tlifting her feet properly due to undiagnosed Parkinsons.
DH and The DC call me "stunt Hopping" due to my ability to fall and not actually get hurt - in fact sometimes it does hurt but I don't tell them
I hope you are OK OP and heal quickly

Stormyweatheroutthere · 10/11/2024 20:48

The year I turned 50 took ddog on the beach.. Long line. Long line caw to its end.. Ddog kept going. I fell back and banged my head.. Nobody cared. Dc mocked me I had had my first oap fall.. Twats.

GoodyBag · 10/11/2024 20:52

Oh I’m sorry, OP. I hate falling, especially in public. It’s like the embarrassment compounds the pain. I think the embarrassment also increases adrenaline so we tend to jump up and pretend all is ok so there’s kind of a come down afterwards.

Nice cup of tea or gin and a chocolate biscuit and I hope you’re feeling a bit better soon xx

Sia8899 · 10/11/2024 20:54

Bless you! Falling over backwards can feel like such a shock for some reason, always makes me feel a bit out of sorts. I’m glad people were around to help you up. Did you feel like you had to hide your injuries as you were embarrassed? Slipping can happen to anyone so nothing at all to be embarrassed about!

Xiaoxiong · 10/11/2024 20:57

Solidarity! I was trying to pull up a music stand today and it was stuck, bent over it to have a look and the metal stand of course finally pulled up and thwacked straight into my chin, I look like I've done 5 rounds in the boxing ring! It can really shake you up when you have an accident - I had to have two cups of tea plus a bag of peas on my chin while feeling very sorry for myself.

Poor you OP. I think it is the shock that can make us feel emotional when this happens. As others have recommended, maybe a warm bath and a drink/cup of tea and something sweet might help. Hope you feel better soon.

Manzana · 10/11/2024 21:00

I feel sympathy for you, I am 63 and crashed off my cycle a week ago, i lay on the road under my bike while concerned passerbys tutted over me. Now i have blue and black sore knees, plus various other bruises. I feel falling over belongs to children, just embarrassing and painful for adults.

TiramisuThief · 10/11/2024 21:00

It can really shake you up and bruises and grazes hurt!

I missed a kerb crossing a road and fell onto both knees and ripped my trousers. Honestly I felt faint with the pain and shock and had to sit down at a bus stop for 15 minutes until I was sure I wasn't going to keel over.

Full sympathy here.

PickAChew · 10/11/2024 21:01

Ouch. I tripped over a pallet that some berk had left in the middle of the pavement, a couple of months back. Similar age to you. I said "bloody" a lot and really hurt myself far more than I could have expected.

Be gentle with yourself, physically and mentally. Chances are you will ache something rotten, tomorrow. ☕

TomatoAuberginePotatoTurnip · 10/11/2024 21:02

I hear you! I have occasionally had a little cry when I've hurt myself.

I'm usually very resilient but just now and again I feel really vulnerable and fragile. Perhaps this is the same for you?

Have a hot chocolate and look after yourself Flowers

Cuppachuchu · 10/11/2024 21:04

I tripped over a couple of weeks ago and cut and bruised my leg, it's really awful when it happens and as PPs say, a bit of a shock to the system. Look after yourself and feel better soon. 💐

ForPearlViper · 10/11/2024 21:06

I think no matter how old we are, we remember when we were young and just bounced backed. It is partly pain and partly grieving for lost youth.

In any case ice packs and an alcholic beverage of your choice is the answer.

bruffin · 10/11/2024 21:06

i'm 62 a spider dangled . in my face as i stepped into the garage last week with an arm full of washing, i went flying !. I have bruised knees. elbow and big toe Grin

GiveusatwirlAnthea · 10/11/2024 21:11

Take comfort in Madonna, poor woman falling backwards as she was pulled by her cloak down a flight of steps at the Brits live in front of millions, she must have been in so much pain yet managed to get up and somehow sing and dance to the end of the song and only the other day Chris Martin falling into a stage trap, happens to the best of people, hope you feel better soon OP.

BarbaraHoward · 10/11/2024 21:11

I fell on the school run the other day - my heel caught in my dress (only realised after that was why) and I fell all the way into the road. Blush

One thing if I was wearing stilettos and a maxi dress, but it was flat Chelsea boots and a midi length dress. 🤷
