I slipped over on the path today ..

I cut myself and have some bruising. I'm feeling really upset about it. I slipped on wet leaves and fell backwards. I hid my injuries (the bleeding) from the people who helped me, Said I was OK, hobbled to the shop to get what I was on my way to get, hobbled back to the car and cried.

I'm 52

I'm not sure why I am feeling so sorry for myself 😪

Been there done that, be grateful we’re still of an age where we ‘fell over’ rather than the infinitely more serious ‘had a fall’. Have yourself a bath, with a glass of gin/tea and I hope you feel better in the morning.

I agree with PP, I reckon you’ll be okay OP, because you ‘fell over’ rather than ‘had a fall’.

MIL has been telling DH she’s ’had a fall’ since she was in her late 40s 🙄

Superworm24 · 10/11/2024 21:43

I slipped over and hurt my back a few years ago. I had to be signed off work and it took months, plus physio to fix. I was only in my 30s. I did end up getting fitter and improving my core strength after.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/11/2024 22:00

I'm also 52 and fell over this year. Fell over my own bloody feet. Shattered my shoulder and wrist. 1 surgery down, 3 to go. Currently have around 30% use of my shoulder but expecting to improve to around 70% eventually. They're hoping I'll get 20% use of my wrist back. So my guitar playing days are over. Getting old sucks.

TiramisuThief · 10/11/2024 22:02

Oh no @MrTiddlesTheCat that's awful. I hope all the surgeries are as successful as possible.

mechanicalpencil · 10/11/2024 22:11

Oh dear, what a day OP
that sucks
Nice, hot bubble bath and a good rest tonight. Maybe a treat or two to help you feel better. Hopefully, you’ll bounce back soon! 💐

@MrTiddlesTheCat that sounds awful 😣 best of luck to you for the remaining surgeries.

That sounds nasty. I found that the worse it looked the better I recovered with my recent fall. Y hands went in front of me and my left hand was black and blue, immediately. It looked ugly but was absolutely fine. I think the fact that my hands are very hypermobile made it look worse than it was. I did aggravate an existing rotator cuff tear though. I was pretty bored with not being able to sew or knit for a while but had to keep reminding myself that it could have been so much worse.

Me too. If I'd managed to stumble one further step forward it would have been my head hitting a low wall rather than my arm hitting the ground. That doesn't bear thinking about.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/11/2024 10:38

I feel your pain! Back in may,we had a hot spell,so we took our dogs to a local park before 8am. The grass was wet, I slipped sideways, fell backwards into my sacrum! My head just missed a low brick wall.when I got home, everything hurt from my shoulders down. Bought a blow up ring cushion, took paracetamol it didn't touch it then ibuprofen. Used ice packs for a few days, then heat. After 2 weeks, not getting any better, Hurting all the time, went to the ED, X ray NAD, she gave me co codamol counter strength. It took 7 weeks to stop hurting. Got fed up with everyone saying it's my age (74) I know a dog walker of 50 who was pulled over backwards by a lab ,hit her bum on a tree trunk had a foot diameter bruise.

Stirrednshaken · 10/11/2024 20:23

Hope you're not too sore. Maybe a long bath?

Solidarity - I fell over backwards at 37 weeks pregnant and broke my elbow when I put my arm out behind me. And the real kicker was that the reason I fell over was that I slipped in horse poo. Which I then also fell in. Wonderful times.

I know someone who slipped in cow poo and managed to break a bone in his leg. Ouch!

I also fell last week. I'm still sore. My first thought was to text my mum. (Parents live about 10 minutes away and I was hoping I could go there and clean up. Had to go to Sainsbury's instead)

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 11/11/2024 11:01

I fell over in the spring onto my bottom and landed in a patch of stinging nettles. It hurt like hell from the bruising and the stinging. I held it together until I got home and then bawled like a baby. I am 55. I had huge red welts that hurt for hours and then itched for days. Luckily for my dignity no one saw it happen, but I was smothered in mud so everyone passed must have seen. Solidarity.

Rosesanddaffs · 11/11/2024 11:09

@Fallinglady hope you are feeling ok.

Reminds me of a fall I had in my 20’s in a shopping centre. I tripped on a piece of cod and hurt my wrist and ripped my tights.

People came to help me but I was so embarrassed, I still feel the same horror when I think about it today.

I don’t have anything useful to add but wanted you to know that you aren’t alone xx

YarkYark · 11/11/2024 12:33

I took a short cut when taking my evening walk - which I take every night and its only on local footpaths - and tripped on a kerbstone and fell literally flat on my face. It was dark, my glasses fell off, I ripped my trousers and had dirt all over my hands. It felt oddly pathetic, especially when I got home and said "I fell over..."

RabbitsRock · 11/11/2024 12:39

Bless you OP - hope you feel better soon & aren’t too sore. It’s the suddenness which is hard to deal with I think, the loss of control 💐💐💐

tedgran · 11/11/2024 13:37

Happened to me yesterday, not sure why, fell forwards, glasses have caused black right eye! I'm 77,and I did it some months ago outside my house, had to ring DH to pick me up! This time I was in York visiting DS who is not well, luckily kind passerby helped him pick me up. Hoping DH won't notice eye when I get home later. Wishing you better soon OP.

MaidOfSteel · 11/11/2024 13:48

I'm a similar age as the OP, and I'm prone to falls because of my health. I know how shocking it is. I had one particularly bad fall outside and grazed the heck out of one side of my face. My knees were hugely swollen and bruised, too. I think it's that momentary loss of control that's the worst thing. I remember thinking I was going to break my nose and my teeth as my face hit the ground. I still relive it over and again.

RelativePitch · 11/11/2024 13:54

I fell over when I was 42 on my slopey street. It had snowed and iced over which is very rare for our part of the UK these days. I didn't hurt myself too much, but it was a proper heavy fall.
I went home and wailed to my DP 'I've had a fall!' Felt sad about it all day.
When our county used to have a lot of snow in the 80s/90s we'd always hear about older people slipping and ending up in A&E. I thought, I'm one of them now.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/11/2024 14:08

Not just older people.my youngest ds was born in 1983, not sure if it was that year or the following, lived in Surrey, very heavy snow. I was working in the ED, called "cas" in those days, people were coming in, fractured coccyx from falling backwards, fractured scaphoid from falling forwards, and putting their hands out, mattresses and people all over the floor. The older ones didn't go out.

ItGhoul · 11/11/2024 14:18

Reasonable to feel sorry for yourself - nobody likes falling over - but try not to dwell on it. Everyone falls or trips at some point in their adult life, and it's obviously not pleasant, but ultimately you haven't seriously injured yourself so all's well really. I personally think the embarrassment factor is by far the worst part of falling over, but honestly, nobody who saw/helped you will have given it a second thought.

I managed to trip on a kerb a few weeks ago and ended up sprawled on the pavement. I felt like a complete tit but I just told myself that at least I escaped with no more than a bruised knee and a few minor scrapes. A nice hot bath that evening helped me feel a bit less battered. I'm in my 40s but I can think of at least two or three occasions when I fell over in my 20s/30s (and wasn't drunk!) so I don't think it's an age thing!

Compash · 11/11/2024 14:49

Sympathies and a magic bandage to everyone who's fallen! 🤗🤕

Last week I tripped on a paving stone and fell into someone's hedge... at least it was a soft landing but I felt daft...

DemelzaandRoss · 11/11/2024 15:05

Sending you flowers…💐
Whether you trip or it’s a ‘fall’ the experience really shakes you up. If nothing seems broken, that’s a blessing. Be kind to yourself & if you can, chill out later. A bit of pampering needed.
I have Osteoporosis & walk staring at the pavement looking for suspicious bumpy bits.
My last 2 falls ( old enough now) have resulted in a double wrist fracture & compression fracture in my spine. All extremely inconvenient & painful.
Lastly, all still young women, please take medical advice re HRT. I’ve been told that it’s unlikely I would be suffering from fractures if I had taken this during my 50s.
