Anybody else dislike the hairdressers?

I only go for a haircut every year or so. I usually trim it myself but its is too long now and needs a good cut. I have been googling hairdressers and hovering over the 'book now' buttons for hours!

I just don't enjoy the experience, mostly come out unhappy with the cut and cant really justify the cost to myself for something I dont enjoy or really appreciated.

I am graduating on Wednesday and needs to wear my hair down really and it needs to be cut.

Please tell me I am not alone in this?

I love beauty treatments and could have them all day, its just haircuts 😑

Are you me! I hate it and haven’t been for years. It’s far too stimulating for me. I just trim my ends at home now.

Plump82 · 10/11/2024 14:25

I can't stand going and haven't had my hair cut by one in over 4 years. I have very long hair so my husband cuts it with his electric clippers.

HansHolbein · 10/11/2024 14:25

Also very well done for graduating! Happy for you.

i have a friend who is a barber and he comes to the house and cuts my hair. It’s a bob - not exactly rocket science. Detest the hairdressers!

MemphisBluesAgain · 10/11/2024 14:28

I don't love it either. Do you take pictures of what you want? I always save a few on Pinterest and look up the description so I know what I'm asking for.

CoCoNoDough · 10/11/2024 14:28

The way you are booking it seems a bit random. Would it help to find a hair dresser that you like the work of and have a proper chat with them about what they can offer you...before you decide to book. And then at the appointment itself bring pictures of what you want.

Would a mobile hair dresser be better for you?...they tend to be cheaper. What is it about the experience you don't like?...apart from the result.

Rainbow321 · 10/11/2024 14:30

For me , a necessary evil , I go 2/3 times a year .

MassiveBeetroot · 10/11/2024 14:32

Hate the hairdressers, have been cutting my own hair for years and have got it just how I like it.
i work with younger staff and am astounded by how much they pay for hair cuts/ extensions and colouring. It just means I can spend my money on other items and not feel too bad about it.
( yet alone add the cost of nails/ eyebrows and everything else they add to their costs!).
it may be worth getting a recommendation for a local hairdresser, some mobile hairdressers can be very reasonable in price, some of the smaller salons will do a cut only to help keep costs down.

GroovyChick87 · 10/11/2024 14:33

I don't like it either. I'm just not a person who enjoys small talk with people I don't know and I don't find it relaxing or enjoyable. But I do go because my hair is a mess otherwise. I don't have any other beauty treatments though, I prefer to do them myself.

Sheknowsaboutme · 10/11/2024 14:37

Me! I have curly hair and its taken a long time to find a pro.

now i go annually to see him and he is FAB!

Comedycook · 10/11/2024 14:39

I hate it

RampantIvy · 10/11/2024 14:40

This is mumsnet so you will get loads of posters agreeing with you.

I don't hate going to the hairdresser, neither do I love it.

It is just something I have to do to look presentable. I don't have the sort of hair I can do myself, so I have mine cut and coloured every 5 weeks or so. It looks awful if I don't.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 10/11/2024 14:44

I hate the salon experience. I now have a mobile hairdresser, who is also a neighbour and friend - I nip over to hers, she does my hair, and we have a chat and a cup of coffee whilst my hair's in foils.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/11/2024 14:45

The prices are eye watering - I wish I could cut it myself but whenever I've tried it looks crap. I was offered an "express blow dry" the other week for £20. I asked what that was and it turns out they just blast it dry with a hairdryer - for £20!! I'll let it dry on the way home for free thanks

UpUpUpU · 10/11/2024 14:46

I wear my hair up 95% of the time. It has to be up for work and I love having plaits and intricate styles when tied up. It is about boob length, one length as it's easier to plait/tie up without bits sticking everywhere. I just want a straight cut, no layering or colour so dont want to spend a fortune. I have no desire to go and speak to a hairdresser and choose that way as what I want is so simple.

I went to book the one I used to go to for years but they want £65 for a 30 minute haircut. I cannot justify that at al.

I am just going to book the one I am hovering over. It looks ok, has raving reviews and is half the price.

My uni group chat are discussing hair and some of the younger women are spending a fortune on cuts, colours, extensions etc!

Hate it. Haven't been since 2013. I cut my own, use the pony tail/unicorn method.

I'm same with a spa, love a treatment.

Overtheatlantic · 10/11/2024 14:56

I hate it too. Unfortunately my hair requires layers to look halfway decent.

catin8oots · 10/11/2024 14:59

Loathe it. But it's a necessary evil 4 times a year

Jessie1259 · 10/11/2024 15:02

I haven't had my hair cut by a hairdresser since I was 11, I hate it. My hair it longish and wavyish so i just cut then ends off myself. It save a huge amount of money too.

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 10/11/2024 15:04

Hates having a hair cut
Hates answering the phone
Hates answering the door
Hates fireworks
Hates going to weddings
Hates trick or treaters
Everyone's anxious about everything
Hates driving
Hates baby showers with a passion
Hates having people in their house
Hates men

Mumsnet is a strange place. I sometimes think it's so far from reality. So many people hate / get anxious over completely normal things that the majority in real life do or celebrate.
Some of the advice on here is good in general but I think a huge % of people on here are weird / socially weird. Coming from someone who's ND!

Anyway rant over 😂

Lorrymum · 10/11/2024 15:09

You sound like me!
I hate the whole experience, from getting entangled in the coverall thingy. Looking at myself in the mirror for 30 minutes.
Making small talk.
Knowing that my hair is so fine that it probably only takes a few snips and it's done! Straight forward bob.
Whether to have the massage machine on or off when having my hair washed.
Being frozen or scalded when having hair washed.
Tipping!
Im toying with the idea of going to a barbers and just asking for a trim

Falalalalah · 10/11/2024 15:11

I hate it, despite having a great hairdresser who generally does a good job and is nice. I just hate how long colour takes (but doing it myself is a disaster, and my grey is so weirdly distributed that I can't yet leave it undyed, as I look like a demented badger), and even if I bring a book, which I always do, I hate sitting around catching glimpses of myself looking like a damp skinned rabbit in the window.

Comedycook · 10/11/2024 15:13

A hairdresser made a bitchy comment to another hairdresser while washing my hair when I was a teenager. Put me off for life...I go but hate every second

Growlybear83 · 10/11/2024 15:17

I've always hated hairdressers, and have had two disastrous experiences over the years - the second time I sued the hairdresser, and won 😆😆. I've been to a hairdresser twice in the last 32 years and have no intention of ever going again.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/11/2024 15:19

Covid was the break point . DH has learnt from internet tutorials how to cut mine and vice versa. Twenty minutes in the kitchen, no ‘small talk’ , nice coffee.
