Anybody else dislike the hairdressers?

UpUpUpU · 10/11/2024 14:24

I only go for a haircut every year or so. I usually trim it myself but its is too long now and needs a good cut. I have been googling hairdressers and hovering over the 'book now' buttons for hours!

I just don't enjoy the experience, mostly come out unhappy with the cut and cant really justify the cost to myself for something I dont enjoy or really appreciated.

I am graduating on Wednesday and needs to wear my hair down really and it needs to be cut.

Please tell me I am not alone in this?

I love beauty treatments and could have them all day, its just haircuts 😑

I loathe everything about it. Hate being touched, can't stand them being rough with my hair, can't stand water dripping down me, hate the anticipation of how it'll look, hate the big reveal and resent paying hundreds for it. My hairdresser is lovely and funny and I tell him all this every time and he accommodates me but I still loathe it.

the80sweregreat · 10/11/2024 17:58

I don't mind it, but I wished I could do it myself tbh. I know I'd mess it up if I tried to do it though and end up with a wonky fringe.
The prices have gone up a lot since lockdown.

getthosetitsup · 10/11/2024 17:58

I used to be the same until I found my current hairdresser, who is absolutely brilliant and has become a mate.

Hate the hairdressers, have been cutting my own hair for years and have got it just how I like it.
i work with younger staff and am astounded by how much they pay for hair cuts/ extensions and colouring. It just means I can spend my money on other items and not feel too bad about it.
( yet alone add the cost of nails/ eyebrows and everything else they add to their costs!).
it may be worth getting a recommendation for a local hairdresser, some mobile hairdressers can be very reasonable in price, some of the smaller salons will do a cut only to help keep costs down.

How do you do the back?

I do my own layers but struggle when the bottom gets long and straggly.

Yes I hate the hairdressers, I always look haggard in the mirrors (even as a teen / twenty something when I actually wasn't), can never quite communicate what I want and they always use product on it which my very fine hair looks terrible with.

I just reluctantly booked an appointment for Tuesday but if I could do the back myself I would cancel it.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/11/2024 18:57

I bloody hate it. I was a really good looking young woman and now I'm 62, fat with a saggy neck and I sit there looking into their incredibly unflattering mirror thinking when did I get so ugly.

Agree, the mirrors are especially harsh and hateful and add 10 years!

Phrillo · 10/11/2024 19:01

Lol at the PP stating 'not enjoying the hairdresser the sole domain of Mumsnet' 😅😅😅

Most people I know are not on mumsnet and do not enjoy the awkwardness of the hairdresser. You're not alone OP

spuddy4 · 10/11/2024 19:02

Hate it.

Hate the time it takes, the cost and just generally hate the experience. There's nothing more humbling than looking at yourself in a hairdresser's mirror with soaking wet hair and looking like a long lost relative of shrek. Seriously though I don't know what powers those mirrors hold because they bring out the worst of me.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/11/2024 14:45

The prices are eye watering - I wish I could cut it myself but whenever I've tried it looks crap. I was offered an "express blow dry" the other week for £20. I asked what that was and it turns out they just blast it dry with a hairdryer - for £20!! I'll let it dry on the way home for free thanks

To b fair a blow dry is the only thing hairdressers ever do that is noticeably better.

Its a lot of money and no one even notices. Actually the "dry" cut I had on my curly hair in Scotland was absolutely shocking ( literally looked like it had). I assumed she wanted it dry to see my curl. Nope she brushed it all out straight....! It was horrific.

Ihave this weird nerve thing in hairdresser where they set my spine off. It's horrible.

elozabet · 10/11/2024 19:05

I'm hate hairdressers. Luckily mine comes to my house and has done for about 25 years.
God knows what I'm going to do when she retires.

RuthW · 10/11/2024 19:09

Absolutely hate it, but has to be done like brushing your teeth. I go every 6 weeks.

UpUpUpU · 10/11/2024 19:10

I am so glad I am not the only one.

I have booked for Tuesday. Fingers crossed it doesn’t look bad for my photos on Wednesday 🤞🏻

I don't like going to the hairdressers, so I don't go. I think I last went in 2021, because DH had kindly got me a voucher so I felt obliged to use it. I just grow my hair now and leave it at its natural length. It's about waist-length and I clip it up so nobody sees the ends.

Burntout101 · 10/11/2024 19:16

I dislike the hairdresser's too. Overstimulating sounds, smells, heat, small talk. Not happy with looking at myself in the mirror for ages. Not sure how I want my hair.
I go about every 6 months. I've started trimming my own fringe and sides (bangs?) and thinking about trying the whole lot myself

Bignanna · 10/11/2024 19:16

Another reason I don’t like going to the hairdressers is it seems like a clique. They sit there talking about their families, clothes etc, and I’m not one to be telling others about my business in a personal way. They’re nice to me, but I do feel I’m on the sidelines.

Bitteralmond · 10/11/2024 19:17

Another one here who has just discovered the barber! Had so many disappointing and expensive haircuts at the hairdressers. Then tried with limited success to cut my own hair. My husband's barber has started cutting his hair at our work since she went mobile, so I asked her if she cut women's hair too. Revelation! Best cuts I have ever had and much quicker and cheaper, without the salon experience. They don't usually do the fancy colouring and treatments though.

headstone · 10/11/2024 19:19

I hate it too, always looked awful in the mirror even when young. I only go once every 3 years now to hack a load off. Did this in the summer so safe for another 3 years now.

Snippit · 10/11/2024 19:22

I’m with you here,I absolutely hate going to the hairdressers!!

In America you require a license to become a hairdresser, in this country anyone can do it. I once had one who admitted that she hadn’t done the module on perming, so they literally pick and choose. I recently had a cut and she used a razor for the whole cut 🤦‍♀️, what a fuck up, one side is thinner than the other. Thankfully I can tie it up, I don’t find it comfortable and I no longer trust them.

BlueEyedLeucy · 10/11/2024 19:25

I hate them, so I just have my hair short and cut it myself with clippers. Saves me money on hair dressers and on products. And time. Don’t even need to brush it in the morning!

Beepbeepoutoftheway · 10/11/2024 19:30

Yes! I turn into a nervous wreck when I'm there!

We had a disastrous experience with builders and I marched into the manager's office, refused to leave and really argued with three fully grown men. (I won 😂)

Went into a hairdressers to have my fringe trimmed for £5. Gave her £10 with the expectation I'd get £5 change, yet the hairdresser took that as me giving her a tip and I didn't have the balls to disagree! Worst bit was, my hair looked bloody awful! 😂

This, love a buzz cut.

JawsCushion · 10/11/2024 19:34

Surely if your hair looks awful if not cut and coloured every five weeks you need a different style?

I’m exactly the same op. I love beauty treatments (I even became a beauty therapist because of this) but I detest getting my hair done. Recently I took a pair of scissors and cut my own hair. It’s not even but I’m much happier with it than I would have been going to a hairdresser

the80sweregreat · 10/11/2024 19:37

I knew someone who sued a hairdresser over a bad perm and won! Was in the 80s though

Mydahliasareshit · 10/11/2024 15:40

Well, how about we unpick that lot just for one moment?

The basis of some of this for those lucky enough to have reached their 4th decade and beyond, is being utterly tired of bullshit, that we didn't realise was bullshit (or even a thing) when we were younger.

(Hates having a hair cut)

Reasons: bored with the hours it seems to take when a proficient mobile hairdresser is in and out in half an hour. The endless waiting while others are seen to. 5 quid or more for a coffee. Conversations with no point or desire to share personal details. A ridiculous bill in 3 figures. Neck ache in the bowl. A spouse that shakes his head incredulously at the price. Having to overhear spiteful or bitchy conversations. The embarrassment all round of tipping in the 21st century. Being pressured to book next appointment when you have zero idea of your movements several months from now.

(Hates answering the phone)

Sick of spammers, cold callers, salesmen, people you don't especially like but have to deal with politely for the benefit of people you love. Fake ambulance / accident calls. Exhausting people who refuse to end conversations.

(Hates answering the door)

Tired of chancers trying their luck to fleece you for gutter cleaning while flinging slates off your roof. Tired of putting your name to endless deliveries for neighbours who don't come and collect their parcels. Sick of religious door knockers putting on the nicey act, who you know from family experience encourage shunning and excluding family and friends. If you live in London, or some other cities, the very real chance of someone with a knife demanding entry or a hit of acid in your face. Fake charity chuggers.

(Hates weddings)

Mainly the grabbiness, entitlement, stupidity and expense of hen weeks abroad. Hours left to fill with no food, drink or entertainment 'coz photos'. People being their cringiest, stingiest, or most aggressive / batshit selves.

(Hates driving)

I really loved driving. Into classic cars, the lot. Hate parking scammers, fake q codes, 20mph for no reason, idiotic smart motorway death traps, people on drugs behind the wheel, insurance scammers who drive into you, scam moped drivers looking for compo, the extortionate insurance companies, people looking to steal your car if you leave it more than an hour anywhere, congestion charging 24hrs, Ulez bullocks, the goalposts ever- changing.
