😴I can’t get no sleep 💤

It must be a week now since I haven’t been able to sleep for more than a couple of hours a night. Sleep has been a problem for me on and off for a long time.
Anybody else struggling too?

I'm a terrible sleeper and have been awake since 4am this morning! I just want to sleep 😴 I went to bed at 11pm woke again at 2am, then 3ish and gave up around 4am! Same every night..

This sounds like me, I actually dread going to bed even though I'm so tired

PurplePanda1 · 11/11/2024 05:45

Hi everyone,

It helps to know I’m not alone, but I’m also sorry to hear so many of us are struggling with our sleep.
Bit of a bad night for me again, tried listening to sleep meditations rather than be on my phone which didn’t help much.
I’ve ordered some Magnesium, zinc & B vitamins which I read might help so will try those next.
sleep deprivation is the worst isn’t it.

I can get to sleep at night relatively easily but then I wake up normally around 1,30 and then I'm awake off and on until it's time to get up. I've always had trouble with sleep but the last month has been particularly bad. I have been sleeping in our spare room on a sofa bed as I told my husband I want him to leave, he's still here though as he has no money at the mo ( lost his job in June and only just started a new one and hasn't been paid yet). I long to be back in my comfy bed!

Hi everyone, here again. So tired but just can’t sleep. I tried some lavender pillow spray for both DD who is 3 1/2 years old and can be a bad sleeper and me. It hasn’t worked for me yet but fingers crossed it is working for DD.

@rockingbird I’ve become a terrible sleeper too, much the same pattern as you, bits of sleep here and there.

@starlight94 I dread going to bed too now. Maybe this is part of the insomnia problem, a vicious circle.

@Frenchyq25 I hope you can be back in your comfy bed soon.

Long term menopausal insomnia . I have tried every bit of sleep hygiene advice non helps. I have self medicated on alcohol, promethazine, night nurse , magnesium, melatonin and co codomol not all at the one time obviously or I’d be dead but then I’d get that sleep😂😂
what works best for me is 2x 30 mg co codomol and 2x3 mg melatonin. I buy the melatonin online and I get pain relief for a back injury but only take them at night.
The treatment options for insomnia is shocking as prescribing guidelines are really strict for dependence and tolerance reasons.
My GP is sympathetic but their hands are tied and they know what I use.

The irony is I am in more danger of driving exhausted than tolerance issues.
No surprise that I’m awake tonight as I forgot to collect my co codomol prescription yesterday as the melatonin on its own is no use.

@giggly Ive tried some of these too. Sleep hygiene doesn’t seem to be working for me either.
I spoke to my GP too who was the same about there not being much else I can try. Benzo’s were mentioned but I won’t touch anything like that for fear of addiction.

Can I join? I have never really slept well but it's been much worse since menopause. I just can't turn off my brain. Either that if I get this panicky feeling of doom.

Chronic tinnitus doesn't help- it's soooo loud and ironically, it's a lot louder when I am tired. Nothing doctors can do about it as my hearing is fine.
I can't listen to anything either as it would keep DH awake.
10 kHz tone 24/7 - sigh...

@KnottyKnitting - You are welcome. Sorry to hear about the tinnitus.

Have you tried epsom salts baths? It's the best way to get magnesium, which absorbs better through the skin than orally. Make the water as hot as you can stand, put about a cup of the salts in and soak and relax for at least twenty minutes. Before you get in the tub, take 5-10 mg of melatonin. You can also try GABA, glycine and theanine, but they are on the expensive side.

Me too. It drives me crazy. The only thing that helps is keeping the TV on so I can't hear it. Have you tried putting on soothing music and using headphones so you don't disturb hubby?

@XChrome I haven’t got a bath where I’m currently living. I didn’t know that about the magnesium absorbing better through the skin though so thank you for that. I will have a bath once my new home is renovated.

The melatonin dose I was given was only 2mg, maybe thats why it didn’t work for me?

Are GABA, glycine and theanine supplements?

Can you get Melatonin Gummies delivered to you? I'm in Australia and I order from Iherb in the US to get melatonin gummies. They help with getting to sleep and sometimes staying asleep. Otherwise could you talk to your GP about prescription melatonin?

KnottyKnitting · 12/11/2024 03:49

@XChrome I have a tinnitus app with various sounds which are helpful but I find ear phones uncomfortable. I start to drop off, turn over and get tangled in them which of course wakes me up and ear buds can only really be worn laying on my back and I cant sleep on my back...

Have you tried a snooze and, the earphones lay flat ,so you should be able to sleep on your side

Argh, that sucks. Maybe you need your own bedroom or a sofabed in your living area so you can have your sounds playing. Sleep is so important that surely your husband could understand that.

KnottyKnitting · 12/11/2024 05:08

@Frenchyq25 - I actually saw snoozeband advertised somewhere the other day. Just ordered one! Thanks!

I'm the same on the sleep front. :-(

I started magnesium glicate about 5 weeks ago
Sleep much improved for about 3 of those weeks and then downhill again. Slept until 4am last night about 6 hours which is a win for me.

I've started ashwaghda now. Fingers crossed as I've exhausted all other options I feel.

I'm trying to exercise 5 days a week.

Early morning walks every morning.

Eat well.
Don't drink after 6pm. Still do one or two weeks a night.
Don't really have any massive stress in my life.
Monthly massage.
Don't drink alcohol or caffeine

I feel it's ruining my life as I'm tired all the time which makes me exhausted after dinner and fit for nothing except trying not to fall asleep in front of the TV.

I've got heart palpitations, and when I haven't slept well, a racing heart in the mornings.
Interestingly I think I sleep better on holiday when I'm outside all day. Wondering if it's the bit D?

Good luck x

Sympathy to everyone here, insomnia is the worst. I have found phenergan (an antihistamine) pretty effective at resetting my sleep when I get into a bad cycle. I have been able to buy it OTC but many pharmacists want a prescription from the doctor if it's for sleep. It isn't chemically addictive. Usually I end up taking it for two or three nights - it knocks me out - and that's enough to get me back into a better sleep rhythm. It's the only thing that has ever really worked for me, and I've tried pretty much everything recommended on this thread.

It could be your circadian rhythm is being affected by seasonal affective disorder. I have a special light that simulates sunlight for that because I get severe SAD. They are affordable and last a long time, so worth a shot maybe? I have had mine for fifteen years and never even had to replace a bulb. You just expose your face to it for 15-30 minutes early in the day. If you do it every day fifteen minutes may be enough.
