At what age would you allow your child to 'get their eyebrows done'?

I'm talking about shaping them at a brow bar - no dye or anything like that.

I go every 2 weeks or so and get my eyebrows shaped and tinted.

12 yr old dd has asked if she can come and get hers done too (again, just shaped and tidied up, nothing more). My instinct is to say no but I'm not completely sure why. Would the salon even do a 12 yr old?

She is fair haired and they just look like normal 12 yr old eyebrows, but she obviously feels that she wants to clean them up :/

When she’s left school, working and can pay for it herself.
It’s sad that a 12 year old feels that she needs to change the way she looks.

theorangecounty · 07/11/2024 17:44

It's fine at 12, that's old enough if she wants it

Zone2NorthLondon · 07/11/2024 17:45

Obviously she’s observed you going and wants to copy. I’d gently dissuade her, tell her she’s beautiful no tweek required

16, when they’ve had a job and can pay for it themselves.

AsFunAsEnglishWeather · 07/11/2024 17:45

I let dd do it at 12 or 13 (I forget exactly which). A tidy is fine.

cheerfulaf · 07/11/2024 17:49

12 is roughly the age that I started plucking my eyebrows, same for DD

at least if she goes to get them done she won’t overpluck/ruin them (looking at you 2001) plus it’s a nice thing you can do together

she’s at the age where she’s becoming more self aware and it’ll be nice if anything that helps her feel confident (within reason) is supported by you

My daughter had a monobrow and was bullied so she had hers done from the age of 10. Think your comment is harsh.

SirChenjins · 07/11/2024 17:55

If she had a monobrow or very busy eyebrows that she was very self conscious of then 12 seems fine. A tidy up of blonde eyebrows ‘just because’ then no, there’s no need at 12.

floorchid · 07/11/2024 17:58

@SirChenjins I think that's about what I think. I have no real problem with a 12 yr old tidying up her eyebrows, I just don't think dd really needs to.

When she’s 18 and can make that decision herself with her own money.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/11/2024 18:26

I took my daughter to have her's threaded at the age of 11 as boys in her class laughed at her eyebrows and she got really down about how they looked. I tried to tell her that I'd be delighted to have nice full eyebrows like her's but the boys had made her feel so awful she just wanted them thinned out.

It cost £7 and made the world of difference to her self confidence. She had it done regularly until she realised for herself that she really didn't need to. Now at 16 she doesn't have anything done to them but she shapes them a little herself with the tweezers just to keep them neat.

Gosh that's sad: 11 year old boys laughing at girls eyebrows and girls of 11 having their confidence shaken at such a young age.
Really depressing.

I was allowed at 17

This. I have incredibly dark hair and am pale - I would have been very self conscious about it had I been stopped from tidying them.

DragonFly98 · 07/11/2024 18:53

High school so 11/12

Starlight7080 · 07/11/2024 18:55

So many of my female friends 40 plus who have been doing their eyebrows since early teens now have none or hardly any and have to draw them on daily.
I have never understood the need to be obsessed with it.
I have told my dc to leave them alone till older . Obviously if they had a monobrow situation then that's different

Singleandproud · 07/11/2024 18:57

Personally I just have a blanket ban on funding anything like that it makes it much easier to say no if they know it applies to everything, no piercings, no nails, no eyebrows, no waxing. The exception ofcourse is hair cuts and she has been free to choose how she wears her hair forever - currently a partially shaved mullet so she can express herself that way. Although I also don't have those things done either.

If she decides to use her own money for it that's a different matter, and if she is old enough to earn it herself she is old enough to make that decision. So she did use her pocket money to buy some hair dye, we did her hair she liked it but hasn't bothered spending her own money on it again.

stillavid · 07/11/2024 18:59

I would take her - took my DD when she was about 14 I think. She wasn't so keen to go again as the threading hurt ;)

Incrediblehulker · 07/11/2024 19:00

I think my daughter was 14 when she first got her eyebrows tinted. They are naturally very fair, almost invisible, and it actually made a really big difference to her appearance and gave her confidence a boost. For that reason, I’m glad I didn’t hold out any longer - I wasn’t keen on her doing it - mainly because I’m not well versed in that kind of thing and had very little idea what she was talking about when she first asked to get them tinted (when she was about 12). I like her natural look, but there is no doubt that she looks much more fashionable with tinted brows and her friends find her new look more attractive.

BookishType · 07/11/2024 19:02

I think if they’re causing her embarrassment for whatever reason, I’d let her. But I’d hover over the procedure like a hawk.

mitogoshigg · 07/11/2024 19:09

Unless there's a specific reason eg really thick, monobrow or similar then when she can pay. I'm actually shocked anyone goes every 2 weeks. I've never been

No, it isn't a harsh comment, in fact it's a very reasonable comment. Your daughter being bullied because of a mon brow is a completely different kettle of fish.

mathanxiety · 07/11/2024 19:24

When I was about 14 the topic of eyebrows came up somehow, and DM said I should never touch mine as they were so perfect. I had been working on them since I was about 12 :-)

Thewholeplaceglitters · 07/11/2024 19:35

i took dd before she started secondary school - no monobrow but she does have pretty full brows so I understood her wanting them tidied up.

She liked the way they looked but found it too painful so didn’t want to go again until recently - 18 months on she’s suddenly started asking to go again & book in regular appointments.

I don’t think 12 is too young if it’s bothering her.
