At what age would you allow your child to 'get their eyebrows done'?

floorchid · 07/11/2024 17:40

I'm talking about shaping them at a brow bar - no dye or anything like that.

I go every 2 weeks or so and get my eyebrows shaped and tinted.

12 yr old dd has asked if she can come and get hers done too (again, just shaped and tidied up, nothing more). My instinct is to say no but I'm not completely sure why. Would the salon even do a 12 yr old?

She is fair haired and they just look like normal 12 yr old eyebrows, but she obviously feels that she wants to clean them up :/

Have you been near a 12yo since you were one?

They're an entirely different breed than they used to be!

@floorchid

can't she learn to pluck them herself? if she just wants to tidy them up?

my friends 12 year old & all her friends 'get them done' at the salon, but they have the latest treatments & styles. They're far more 'put together' than I am!!

i wish we could wind the clocks back, to when I was that age. Mind you I lived in NZ then where the girls (even now) don't get into stuff like this so young.

DD and her friends didn’t know anything about having their eye brows done when they were 12. They had just gone into the senior section at school, excited about getting the Tube on their own or competing for places in the swim team.

anonny55 · 07/11/2024 22:58

I started getting mine waxed at 12. I was a very girly girl and all of my friends was getting theirs done so my mum let me..I loved it and felt real good about myself with my new brows!😆

When she was 18 and an adult who could decide for herself and pay.

Gosh that's sad: 11 year old boys laughing at girls eyebrows and girls of 11 having their confidence shaken at such a young age.
Really depressing.

it's been happening for decades, I remember the same at the same age and that was 30 years ago!

Well I must say I'm surprised that 30 years ago 11 year old boys were bothered or interested enough in eyebrows to make fun of girls about them. I' m surprised 11 year old girls were interested in eyebrows at that age 30 years ago.
I thought this obsession with looks at younger and younger ages was a relatively new phenomenon.

12 😲

Babysharkdododododooo · 07/11/2024 23:36

I would allow it. It’s not a big deal but they may not treat under 16s

Drivingoverlemons · 07/11/2024 23:39

The problem I would have is finding the money for regular upkeep not her being 12. Eyebrows make a huge difference to how you feel, I have mine done for that reason but can’t afford to pay for my daughter too! But luckily she’s happy with her. It’s awful not being, even at 12.

Sorry I can’t seem to link it but just search eyebrow trimmers on Amazon they all look similar

sunsu · 07/11/2024 23:51

I’ve been getting my brows waxed since I was 11/12. I remember walking with my friend after school to the salon together and both getting our brows waxed! We did this every 6/8 weeks. I personally think those saying 16/18 are being too strict. Eyebrows make a huge difference to your confidence and it’s better to get it done properly

Baseline14 · 08/11/2024 00:29

I have very fast going brows that I wouldn't say are bushy but they do take over my face and there's a definite monobrow. I remember going to town with the tweezers as a teen one night (must have been around 13). And my friend couldn't work out what was different about me the next day. Then she shouted out across the class 'OMG your eyebrows' when she finally twigged. Started getting them done probably around 14 though did have a job.

I love the feeling of having freshly waxed or tweezed brows and if I had daughters and hadn't had babies with a man with the blondest eyebrows in the world I would 100% support her at 12 if she has requested it. The week before I'm due to get mine done I feel a miserable hairy mess. I would draw the line at HD brows though..it would simply be a natural shaping whilst so young.

When she’s left school, working and can pay for it herself.
It’s sad that a 12 year old feels that she needs to change the way she looks.

Have to agree with this.

Hsh94 · 08/11/2024 01:11

I started getting mine done around ages 11/12 just waxing the monobrow and tidying up the really stray hairs, then started getting tinted at age 16 when I started to pay for and book my own appointments

@Parker231

just how kids shoukd be IMO.

how many years ago was this?

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 07/11/2024 17:51

My daughter had a monobrow and was bullied so she had hers done from the age of 10. Think your comment is harsh.

I think there's a big difference between getting a monobrow sorted & getting designer brows done.

Helpful.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/11/2024 13:38

I'd let a 12 year old for sure. If you don't she will pluck herself and could make a mess

Same here.

ParkBench5 · 08/11/2024 18:47

Not really sure what the issue is tbh. I don’t have an issue with any of my DC (male or female) wanting to look good and feel comfortable in their body.

You’d think you were proposing to send her for Botox by some of these posts.

lunar1 · 08/11/2024 18:58

My sons have both had theirs done since they were 10/11. They have black Indian hair and comparatively pale skin. My eldest was self conscious and getting comments at school.

I was initially reluctant, but DH said if they were in India it would just be offered and done at a normal hairdresser appointment, especially with the contrast of their hair/complexion. So I unclenched and went with it!

They have them threaded at a local Turkish barbers when they have a haircut.

NeverHadHaveHas · 08/11/2024 19:06

My very red headed teenager has been having her white blonde brows lightly tinted and shaped since she was in y7. She was being picked on mercilessly for having ‘no eyebrows’ and her confidence was nosediving. She tried drawing them on but that was obvious and made the teasing worse. She had them done and it improved her confidence levels overnight. No regrets whatsoever. I can’t see how it’s different from them learning to shave their legs or armpits or experimenting with make up.

DidntHaveTheLatin · 08/11/2024 19:07

I don't have the energy to froth about this tbh (and I'm very keen to let children be children generally). I think unless your kids live in an Enid Blyton novel/the 1950s, they will be reasonably aware at the age of 12 of common Western beauty standards (I'm not saying that's a good thing) and therefore the wankier ones will be liable to use that as a reason to bully the ones they don't think match up. I too remember feeling terribly self-conscious about this at age 13 - I vividly remember a girl in my class remarking very loudly that mine looked like "a couple of seagulls" (the way that kids draw birds in a V shape 😁😭) - thanks Vicky!! Maybe it's because I think of an eyebrow tidy-up or tint as more of a practicality rather than a pampering/primping kind of thing, I don't know.

Same - mine's a redhead also and her brows are quite pale. I tint mine, and do hers as well as it saves £ on the appointment!
