I like her, she’s clear and articulate and unapologetic.

she’s also downplaying her race (she was asked about it, didn’t bring it up) as opposed to Rachel Reeves going on again about being the first female chancellor.

OP posts:
EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 03/11/2024 17:40

To illustrate Starmer’s policy vacuum aside from the trite ‘smash the gangs’ during election campaigning, he was all over Meloni like a nasty rash, as soon as he caught wind of her Albania plan (currently subject to a block by the Italian judiciary).

That tells you everything.

StrongM1nt · 03/11/2024 17:41

I think the Tories have forgotten it’s not a private club, they actually need people to vote for them and just being nasty doesn’t resonate with people or make them want to vote for them. The arrogance is hysterical.

I find her voting record abhorrent.

"They"don't get them here either.

Interesting articles about what's being done now. I suppose it will take time (if it ever stops) and dreadfully people will suffer and die in the interim.

That is incorrect as it's out of date. October was the highest month this year and the number has surpassed 2023

So what is the answer then @EasternStandard ?

Liesmorelies · 03/11/2024 17:49

She was appalling on the show this morning and just came across as supremely arrogant - even the way she was leaning back. Saying Johnson was a great PM and downplaying partygate - not only do I disagree but it shows shocking lack of judgement from her. So many people are still incensed by the hypocrisy and the law-breaking, and saying the laws were wrong in the first place, while people here may agree with that, it was the people breaking them that made them in the first place! So how she can casually trot that line out I have no idea.

Also, the way she said Rachel Reeves being female chancellor was a very low ceiling - wtf?! So rude, dismissive...and wrong. I also never liked how Rishi Sunak kept saying that his being Asian wasn't a big deal. I think that sort of comment downplays the racism (and sexism) that definitely does still massively exist in this country. This things are very much a big deal and the gracious comments from KS about her victory are a sharp contrast to her snarky comments about RR.

I get that some people like her, but I really struggle to see her winning over undecided people.

I know!!!!! Amongst the obvious hideousness I don’t realise how anti green the Tory party is going to be now. She has voted against every green initiative from water quality to biodiversity, air quality and measures to curb climate change. 😱

And she voted for the Covid measures she’s now distancing from!!!!

Consistently voted for public health measures and social restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19Show votes20 votes for, 1 vote against, 1 absence, between 2020–2021. Comparable Conservative MPs almost always voted for. Absences for this policy may be affected COVID-19 re

How is her voting record different from other members of the Conservative party, exactly? Political parties nearly always vote en bloc.

Withtheday · 03/11/2024 17:58

I have no party allegiances and I want a sensible moderate centrist party in power. And in opposition. I fear an extreme right wing conservative party will spend a long time in opposition. But I suppose that is better than a extreme right wing conservative party in power. I don't like the way the conservatives are getting more right wing. I don't like ideological positions from either the left or right, but want sensible, well thought through evidence based positions from all sides of the political spectrum.

Understairscupboard · 03/11/2024 17:59

She voted 9 times against Landlords paying for the cost of building safety works and 3 times against higher fire safety standards in housing.

But she said the opposite on LK so lying already. Had no idea the entire party was vehemently anti Green!😱

blacksax · 03/11/2024 18:00

SensibleSigma · 03/11/2024 17:11

Absolutely not! But she doesn’t have to support critical race theory and maternity leave because she’s a black female. Or stand up against babies dying in the channel. She’s being held up to a different set of values because she’s a black woman.

Thanks for that - I must admit my interest in politics is less than zero and I avoid all news and current affairs like the plague, so I know very little about the person in question.

It's very similar to other members of the Conservative party.

fussychica · 03/11/2024 18:00

Unfortunately she's under the impression she's the Thatcher for the 21st century. Fortunately she isn't but she shares some of the same negative traits.

All women should acknowledge other women's achievements even when they don't agree their politics. To say that Reeves has only smashed a very, very low glass ceiling becoming the first female Chancellor to hold the post in 800 years makes her look more than a little silly and certainly lacking in the generosity to recognise another woman's political achievement.
Typical Kemi.

I think Kemi was simply puncturing Reeve’s super high opinion of herself…

privatenonamegiven · 03/11/2024 18:02

The way she belittled Rachel Reeves as the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer this morning on was childish and came across as someone who is envious and bitter. It did her no favours

Understairscupboard · 03/11/2024 17:46

To start with recognise smash the gangs won't help, it will make it worse

By answer do you mean you want something that works? The only thing that decreases numbers is a deterrent

Whether people are more willing to have rising numbers and deaths or do something else I guess we'll see over the next few years

There is also allocation which the EU is starting, so that could be something that shifts the landscape. If it works we might angle to get in to that

Agree, I find it so disappointing that women in particular seem to like nothing better than pull other successful women down.. and yet call themselves feminist!

Understairscupboard · 03/11/2024 18:07

@EasternStandard thanks for your reply. Sadly the Rwanda deterrent didn't keep people safer or reduce numbers. It just put prices up.

Working with other countries seems a good step forward. It's just heartbreaking to see children die because of this.

You'll have to remind me of where Butler has pronounced herself as an ardent defender of women's rights.
