I agree somewhat with the first half, I said previously womens worth is tied up in their desirability to men, in their proximity to the hallowed penis. But I depart a bit, because whilst it might not be meaningful power, it is still power to be able to entice men. Sexual power is power. Worthy power? Not necessarily, but travel abroad to some other countries and they don't allow women to express that same power overtly because they don't believe women ought to have power at all.
Some of the second part though I am not wholly sure about.
Aren't we agreeing with the former argument - by proxy - if we say that a woman is dehumanised and devalued by having sex with men?
If pornified portrayals of women as passive, interchangeable, sexualised props are really the means of obtaining power, why isn’t the same treatment being extended to men?
Is the same treatment never extended to men? I don't watch porn involving men on men, or by men for female audiences and I don't spend time considering male prostitution ,but ok I am being a tad facetious here. As a culture I accept men definitely aren't lining up to take that position, sexual differences aside. The author has a definite point.
Yeah it's hard to disagree with that. Overall I think you're right that women are often being objectified within the porn industry and that's powerful if it's not chosen. This is actually my private view. But I think making a statement about values attached to female expression of sexuality is powerful and I think being able to choose it (as opposed to being coerced) is.
