Do you have birth name or married name on passport?

If you are married but have kept your birth (maiden) name for professional use, which name do you have on your passport?

I'm getting married :) and would like to use both names ideally for different reasons

I have my married name in my passport but only changed it when my passport was due for renewal. I have a note printed in it saying also known as Mrs Maidenname. My driver's license is in my maiden name so I have ID in both names. To be honest I have found it quite a faff and sort of wish I'd gone for one surname or the other. The man at the post office couldn't get his head around it when I was renewing my driver's license but so far no problem having them in different names.

nomorehocuspocus · 01/11/2024 22:33

ExH offered to change his surname to mine, but I hated my maiden surname and couldn't wait to get rid of it so I changed my name to his. Been divorced and remarried since, so changed again.

Weddingquestions · 01/11/2024 22:42

I can't decide what to do but have about 8 years left on my passport so I've got time! 😆

Can you get a joint bank account and buy a house with married name if your passport/driving licence is still in your maiden name?

Having a note in the passport about being known as Maidenname sounds good! Is it on a different page in the passport? @Putyourshoesonnownownow
Thanks :)

Sounds like it might be simpler for your DH to change his to match yours?

Weddingquestions · 01/11/2024 23:19

I think the man has to do it by deedpoll...

Simplest would be for us both to just keep our own names (which is probably what will happen).

I just feel like it would be nice to share a name sometimes, like when travelling abroad. But maybe that's stupid!

Just to say that I have both names on my passport. I use my original surname for most things, including work, but experimented with using my married name a few times.

So my passport has Ms Original Name on the photo page

and there’s another page with ‘Also known as Mrs Married Name’ on the opposite side to the photo page

A deedpoll is incredibly easy to do in the UK!

I kept my birth name at first, but then switched to my married name. Was sick of being stopped and searched at Edinburgh Airport at a time when certain Eastern European surnames were viewed with suspicion.

After that, I finished up gradually changing everything to my married name, given that you often need your passport for picture ID.

Yeah, it’s good! But tbh I’ve never travelled on my married name so I don’t know how easy it is when you are travelling.

I did it to give me some options in case I fancied changing my name, but I never did

TealReal · 01/11/2024 23:26

I think if you have children, it depends on their surname. In certain countries, if you are travelling, they will question why you have a different surname to your children. Less faff to have the same surname

housemaus · 01/11/2024 23:29

DH has his 'maiden' name (he changed to match me) as he's got ages on his passport left. We've remortgaged since then and all sorts and it's not caused any issues - he's got our shared surname on his driving licence, so they don't even match, but it's been fine!

No. A man just does what a woman does! Send a copy of the marriage certificate. Why on earth would it be different?

I think I'll do this too.

I want to be both! 😄 I did ask DP if he wanted to use my name. He didn't say no, but didn't seem that keen. I like that I get to choose and can use both if I want to, so changing mine for some things doesn't bother me.

But will wait until my passport needs renewing and then decide which name will go on the photo page...(Can test out married name in the meantime)

I just have my name. The one I was given at birth. Nothing changed when DH and I married.

No idea why women are still the ones arbitrarily changing their names and passing on male names to children when they’re the ones risking their lives to bring them into the world. Your name is your name. It’s as worthy of being kept or taken as any man’s.

Easily achieved by dad changing his name or giving children both names. (DD has DH’s as a second middle name, so it’s there on her passport despite not being used day to day.)

Neither of us has been stopped whilst travelling alone with DD.

Weddingquestions · 01/11/2024 23:54

@MaggieBsBoat oh yes, you're right...just looked it up. Apologies, didn't realise the law had changed on that. Makes much more sense!

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 02/11/2024 00:08

I have first name/middle name/birth surname/married surname on mine.

I use my married name day to day, but didn't want to completely drop my original name so it's effectively an extra middle name now.

TickingAlongNicely · 02/11/2024 06:47

Re names matching children's...

I've been asked for proof their father knows they ate travelling twice. Once when my passport was still in my old name (so didn't match) and once with my new passport with matching names! (But that was twice in about 20 flights?)

Yes, very easy, there was a line in the form, then they just needed my marriage certificate.

LondonQueen · 02/11/2024 12:53

All my documents have my married name, it was a pain to change them all so if I ever get divorced I'm certainly not changing it back!

Alainlechat · 02/11/2024 13:20

I kept my name but put my married name on my passport as I though it might make it easier when travelling alone with the DCs. As it was I never travelled alone with them and it was a pain having this form of ID in a different name and when booking travel for work.

Once the passport expired I put it in my own name again.

This. It’s a monumentally dopey thing to unnecessarily go to trouble for, quite apart from anything else.
