Do you have birth name or married name on passport?

If you are married but have kept your birth (maiden) name for professional use, which name do you have on your passport?

I'm getting married :) and would like to use both names ideally for different reasons

Ideally you just make a decision to change or not legally, whatever is on your passport is your legal name. I'm changing mine eventually on everything but no urgency.

You can be known as another name professionally eg maiden name but will need your legal name for things like sakary, pension and hmrc.

My brother took SIL’s name as she had an established career with her name.
The deed poll was easy.

MumonabikeE5 · 02/11/2024 13:45

I kept my maiden name for ten years .
but then I travelled with my kids and we were stopped at Luton and they insisted on calling my husband to check the kids were allowed to travel .
so I changed my surname when my passport needed renewing which means I can steal my kids anytime I like .

Freydo · 02/11/2024 13:56

Chose your professional name in case you need to travel for work. I added my husbands surname to mine and changed my mind later.

I ended up with a row at the passport office because my name had also been misspelled and they told me I couldn’t change it on my passport and I was stuck with it for ever!! They eventually agreed to do so after a long argument.

Edited to add: I have 2 children with DH’s surname but was never stopped when travelling alone with them.

I've never been stopped travelling with my two DCs either despite different surnames.
However my DM was stopped coming back into the UK when travelling with my DS1 as a toddler. Different surname AND different nationality though.

Married on passport

Wifeymatters · 02/11/2024 14:19

I switched to his name right away, being very traditional in that way. So right after we married there was a whole lot of work to change the name on everything.
His name is also like a bit foreign one so it's not easy to pronounce for others lol.
But this is like the only way to go IMHO unless you are like a famous actress or something. There is this funny trend going on where you write it like Maiden name-His surname. So Whittaker-Smith or whatever, And a few people just delete the last part once they divorce LMAO!!!

Maiden name on passport but only been married 6 weeks and still five years left on passport!

Yeah. That lovely tradition where women were owned by men in the same way as animals rather than considered people in their own right. What glorious days.

The rest of your post makes me wish the internet was never invented.

Were there no “down with women” marches you could join today?

Wifeymatters · 02/11/2024 16:19

Nope sorry i dont do the marches thing

This. It’s a monumentally dopey thing to unnecessarily go to trouble for, quite apart from anything else.

In Scotland, traditionally the graves of married couples have the woman's maiden name. I notice that that isn't happening so much with modern memorials, however.

@MayWelland I know it’s been a while since you posted here, but I would also like to add my married surname as an observation in my passport and wanted to check what evidence you sent in to get this observation?

Besides your marriage certificate, did you need to send in any other evidence to make this request? Did you state the reason why you wanted the observation?

Struggling to find any definitive answers online so it’d be useful to know what you did.

Thanks very much!

Been married ten years but passport was up so changed to married name. I also changed driving license and I’ve changed my bank. I need to do doctors and I think that’s it. It started getting too confusing. However, I am still known as my maiden name at work.
