What age do you think you entered perimenopause?

Just out of curiosity, i suppose, what age do you think you started perimenopause?

I'm late 30's and not particularly looking forward to it.

In retrospect, 40. That’s when my periods suddenly started becoming a lot more frequent and heavier and I broke out in acne. Serious daily symptoms (hot flushes, debilitating fatigue) started at 42. I wasn’t expecting it that early either.

DustyLee123 · 01/11/2024 06:52

I started losing my hair late 30’s/early 40’s, so I suppose that was it. Although I was having a last rush of hormones and feeling constantly horny, so didn’t think I was!
I finally realised when my PMT became absolute rage.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 01/11/2024 06:53

I've been through menopause I think. I'm 48, periods started getting irregular about 18 months ago and haven't had one for maybe 6 months so I figure it's done.
other than the periods stopping I've not had any symptoms whatsoever. No hot flushes, nothing.
so maybe you'll be lucky like me.

Late 30s.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/11/2024 06:55

45, although things like anxiety and insomnia got progressively worse for me from around 42 but we had Covid at that time so I actually put a lot of it down to that. Hot flushes started at 45 and that's when I started HRT. My mum started HRT at 45 too so there is likely a genetic thing at play too.

LetsChaseTrees · 01/11/2024 06:57

I’m 39 and my PMS has gone through the roof! Which I suspect is the start of it.

GrandesRandonnees · 01/11/2024 06:59

Late 30s (currently 47). About 10 years ago I started experiencing the most awful rage coming up out of nowhere, then awful anxiety and my sleep went to shit. Went on HRT early last year and it has made a difference. Libido has left the building. Only had one hot flush so far and periods are still regular (no idea if the latter is due to HRT). Still anxious but not like I was previously.

Stretchedresources · 01/11/2024 07:00

Around 39/40. I'd had a hysterectomy a few years prior.
At the time the GPs would not accept I might be having an early menopause despite every symptom. Now the NHS website has been updated to say that hysterectomy may well trigger ovary failure.

TimeForATerf · 01/11/2024 07:01

Around 48, periods every 18 days, very heavy, very painful, constant flooding, anxiety. Most of that with the exception of anxiety had stopped by 52 and replaced by night sweats, flushes and aching joints.

All done by about 55 thank god.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 01/11/2024 07:03
  1. I had palpitations and anxiety, no idea they were symptoms.
piscofrisco · 01/11/2024 07:03
  1. It's really hit me since spring this year .
Summerhillsquare · 01/11/2024 07:03

Late 30's. At the time I put symptoms down to a stressful marriage breakdown.

WarriorN · 01/11/2024 07:06

So much I now know that you can do in your 30s to avoid many of the symptoms.

Eat healthily (what's known as a plant forward diet, see Lisa mosconi's xx brain) , focus on stress reduction techniques, avoid alcohol and too much caffeine, prioritise sleep and start building muscle mass. It gets harder to do that as you age anyway but also, more muscle mass helps metabolism.

I have no idea what stage I'm at as I'm on tamoxifen. That has worsened all my menopausal symptoms and gave me hot and cold sweats and all sorts of other menopausal symptoms I didn't have when I started hrt at 44.

But following these principles has stopped the aches and pains and hugely reduced the temperature issues. Possibly also tofu - didn't eat that for a while over the summer and the hot flushes were really bad in sept for a couple of weeks. Haven't had any for 7 weeks now.

Change how you exercise- Stacy Sims book, 'next level roar' is really helpful (or just follow her instagram)

RipleyGreen · 01/11/2024 07:06

In retrospect 41, I am now 55 and have been period free for 3 months. 9 to go… Its been very difficult indeed at times.

Slavica · 01/11/2024 07:07

Around 45 (insomnia, headaches in the lead up to the period, shorter cycles of about 22-23 days, a few hot flashes). I am 49 and still regular, so don't think I'm very close to menopause yet, but who knows.

olympicsrock · 01/11/2024 07:07

42

WarriorN · 01/11/2024 07:08

The strength training has also had a welcome positive and unexpected impact on brain fog and the peri rage.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 01/11/2024 07:09

Peri at 34, full blown at 37, cruising along on HRT in my 40’s.

EveryDayisFriday · 01/11/2024 07:11

42 was when my periods went haywire, 6 months later it ramped up to night sweats, hot flushes and insomnia all within a month. Confirmed peri by blood test and put on HRT.

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2024 07:11

42 my periods started getting really heavy so from there really. 53 now and still going through it.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 01/11/2024 07:13

I’m 45, seriously don’t go into your forties dreading it. not everyone is awful crazy symptoms and if you do you can seek HRT if that’s how you feel.

I think i was 40/41 when my anxiety kicked in. Currently have insomnia and the 3am wake ups intermittently but i’ve had insomnia forever anyway. I get a bit warm at night sometimes but i wouldn’t say i’ve experienced flushes yet. I’ve noticed more PMT symptoms a week before period, more irritable, sore boobs, more achy. I get achy joints but i take Menopace which may help ( and is cheaper than lots of other so called menopause tablets) I also take magnesium before bed. Vitamin D but i took that before. One of them is helping the achy joints anyway!!

Other symptoms are the brain fog , some headaches and nausea but not all the time and random.

I don’t think i’m at the worst of it and I’m not currently on HRT but if symptoms ramp up i’d try it.

If i was you i’d be focusing on a healthy diet, exercising/moving where i can in preparation.

downwindofyou · 01/11/2024 07:13

37-38 ish I think. Regular but massive flooding periods.

I then got pregnant at 39 and it seemed to push it back a bit. The crazy periods started again around 41/42

RJB73 · 01/11/2024 07:14

During my late e 30's my periods started to get very heavy then the extreme anxiety started at 45 along with an exacerbation of existing issues such as my IBS becoming a daily occurrence which has never passed.
I''m now 51 and still have a cycle and this week the hot sweats and night sweats have started.
I am desperate for it to be over as I can't take hrt.

Berga · 01/11/2024 07:18

42 for me as my periods changed and became heavier, I had always had light periods, two days and gone. I started to get occasional flushes too. Just turned 44 and I don't sleep so well now and some times that includes worse anxiety than normal. I'm neurodivergent and now more sensitive to things I could mask before.

Other than that, I'm not on HRT or anything, it feels to me like going through puberty again but this time I have more control over my life and I have wine.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 01/11/2024 07:18

My changes have just been length and intensity of my period - minor symptoms so far, hair texture change is odd. This happened about age 40, period changes more recently at 42. I've prioritised my health, food, stress levels, continued cycle based fasting (Mindy Peltz is amazing) to try and minimise its impact. Mine is ok so far.
