What should my dd16 wear at her first job interview?

Dd16, has been offered a job interview for tomorrow.

It's only a temp Xmas job in a shop but what should she wear? She currently has zero smart clothes as being a typical teen she has a wardrobe full of leggings, jeans and baggy sweatshirts or the complete opposite.

She does have a smart plain black t shirt, a nice pair of black leggings and plain black trainers, would this be appropriate for the interview?

She was only offered the interview this afternoon and it's for 9am tomorrow so no time to go and get anything.

Do you have a white blouse she can borrow? If not then I guess the above will have to do.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/10/2024 21:12

Sounds perfect,as long as she is neat and tidy, maybe you have a jacket/blazer she could top it with,if the weather is chilly. Much depends on the shop, what does it sell?

museumum · 31/10/2024 21:14

Does she not have a school uniform skirt or trousers? Leggings aren’t ideal.

What would she wear to work if she gets the job? Might be worth investing in some smarter trousers now.

Yes this should be fine

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 31/10/2024 21:19

black polo t shirt and black jeans, leggins or trousers - the majority of retail wear that anyway

2chocolateoranges · 31/10/2024 21:24

Not black leggings or black trainers as both are casual.

Smart trousers and a top or a skirt and top.

did she wear black trousers or black skirt to school?

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 31/10/2024 21:27

Wr are currently interviewing for school leaver apprenticeship candidates and honestly the state some turn up as is honestly embarrassing.

Surely she still has school trousers/shirt and a white shirt?

I would absolutely not send her in trainers if you want her to get the job. She needs to look smart and like she has made an effort. It doesn't matter that she will likely be in leggings and trainers if she gets the job. She needs to make a strong first impression.

Eh!

RaininSummer · 31/10/2024 21:32

I think now is a good time to teach her how to dress for interviews and get her a set of smartish clothes including shoes or boots not trainers.

Fireworknight · 31/10/2024 21:34

As others have said, has she got smart school trousers she can wear with polo top?

Or are there any large night-opening supermarkets that sell clothes you can dash to?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 31/10/2024 21:36

I used to interview these kind of roles.

Honestly the plainer/blacker everything is the better because it's not all that noticeable, Unless I'm being super pervy, I wouldn't notice the difference between black leggings and slim fit black trousers anyway. Where people go wrong IMO is bright colours, which draws attention to the cut/style of everything.

I doubt she'd get turned down for wearing what you've described :)

LlynTegid · 31/10/2024 21:36

I would not wear leggings if I was her.

AutumnLeaves24 · 31/10/2024 21:45

I think clean hair, minimal (if any) make up
& a top in good condition is far more important than which trousers/ leggings she wears. If her trainers are clean & in decent shape (rather than been kicked around at the park) they'll be fine. Focus more on her friendliness & attitude than her clothes and she'll be fine!!

Best of Luck to her!

Lightsonlightsofflights · 31/10/2024 21:45

I used to be a manager in retail. What you have described is fine (black leggings, T-shirt, trainers). As long as everything is clean and not scruffy.
Honestly I think it’s best to show up as a tidy version of herself. She is 16, they won’t be expecting her to wear a suit.
The times in my youth when I got it wrong, was listening to other people trying to convince me to dress smart and ending up looking very uncool and like my mum had picked my clothes.
On the whole, retail is a casual vibe. All black sounds about right.

SlugLettuce · 31/10/2024 21:47

I would go for white blouse and black school trousers over leggings and trainers personally but I know trainers are far more acceptable these days.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 31/10/2024 21:53

I’m 40 and my most recent job interview I wore plain black trainers (also retail and yes I got the job!) that part shouldn’t be an issue. Leggings are less than ideal (does she not have dark jeans?) but so long as they’re not the really cheap thin ones aren’t the end of the world. And a plain dark top is fine. School uniform would definitely be a worse choice!

lilacpeach · 31/10/2024 21:57

Does she have a pair of dark jeans that are not too baggy or school trousers? Leggings not ideal really.

RJB73 · 31/10/2024 22:18

Thanks everyone.

Dd wouldn't be able to wear her school skirt as it was a burgundy tartan pleated one and by the time she'd finished school it was rather worn. No school shirt either as they all signed them on the last day, she has now framed it. All the others were rather tatty so they were binned. All her jeans are baggy and light blue, not ideal for interviews.

The t shirt is a slightly longer style one, not cropped or too short and the trainers are completely black Nike air force and do look very much like a shoe style trainer.

The interview is at The Range so not a high end fashion boutique or anything like that so hopefully it'll be ok. Dd is very much into her hair and beauty so will definitely look neat and tidy.

I'll shall be keeping my fingers crossed for her as she has applied for so many part time jobs recently and this is her first ever interview. If she's unsuccessful we will be purchasing some black trousers and a nice smart shirt for future occasions.

Those shoes are the all leather type the kids around here wear for school so I’d say definitely smart enough for an interview op. Best of luck to your daughter, hope she gets it!

KeepinOn · 01/11/2024 08:22

Fingers crossed for her, op! Getting an interview isn't easy for teens these days so she should be proud of herself, whatever the outcome.

coffeesaveslives · 01/11/2024 08:23

She'll be fine in leggings and a smart t-shirt for a casual Christmas job.

Mynewnameis · 01/11/2024 08:26

It sounds fine. Clean nails and tidy hair and smile. Good luck.

Glittertwins · 01/11/2024 08:40

Good luck to her, hope she gets it.
My DD has to wear business appropriate clothes for school so has a variety of smart trousers, shoes and a jacket to wear fortunately.
