What should my dd16 wear at her first job interview?

Dd16, has been offered a job interview for tomorrow.

It's only a temp Xmas job in a shop but what should she wear? She currently has zero smart clothes as being a typical teen she has a wardrobe full of leggings, jeans and baggy sweatshirts or the complete opposite.

She does have a smart plain black t shirt, a nice pair of black leggings and plain black trainers, would this be appropriate for the interview?

She was only offered the interview this afternoon and it's for 9am tomorrow so no time to go and get anything.

Absolutely fine. Good luck to her.

sashh · 01/11/2024 08:44

Fingers crossed she gets it.

milkysmum · 01/11/2024 08:56

Black leggings are absolutely fine for a retail interview. I think it would look odd for a 16 year old to turn up for an interview at the range in her school skirt/ shirt etc.

Fingers crossed for her, op! Getting an interview isn't easy for teens these days so she should be proud of herself, whatever the outcome.

Thank you. Regardless of the outcome, I am so proud that she has been offered this interview even though it is just a temp one. As you say, it is so hard for teens to get part time jobs right now, dd has applied for so many since leaving school and starting college, most don't even get back to her, it is very disheartening.

For all the jobs my DC have done, black leggings or jeans plus a t shirt has been the uniform / requirement. As long as she looks clean and tidy, she will be dressed appropriately.

Rooftileswithmoss · 01/11/2024 09:39

Fingers crossed for her OP. And even if she isn't successful (hopefully of course she will be!), it's such good experience.

My DD had a job when she was as school and it proved so useful in terms of adult interviews, something to add to her first CV, and most of all, being able to deal with the public.

Do update us.

Pinkruler · 01/11/2024 09:40

I would get something smarter than that - can she borrow a blouse / skirt or trousers. Its worth having a pair of shoes or ankle boots for these sorts of occasions.

Brananan · 01/11/2024 09:42

She's 16 and going for a shop job. Dd went for her last interview in jeans, uggs and a top. Got the job.

A white blouse??!

nosmartphone · 01/11/2024 09:43

The Range won't care, what you're suggesting is fine. It's FAR more important that she can communicate and be chatty with both customers and managers. I would not employ a 16 yr old that had no personality or was mute. We need them to have initiative, be able to deal with a customer's enquiry and actually talk to people. I'd be focusing on that, not what she's wearing. So long as she's clean and tidy that will be fine.

hellswelshy · 01/11/2024 09:43

Good luck to her op! My 16yr old dd has worn similar to job interviews recently and looked very presentable. It's a great achievement to get the interviews in the first place at their age, still waiting on a yes for my girl so I know how you're feeling.

SnapdragonToadflax · 01/11/2024 09:47

Her clothes sound absolutely fine for a retail job. To be honest I interview for junior office roles and I'd be surprised to see someone in a blouse/suit type outfit.

That will be fine, my 16 year old waitresses in a nice restaurant and attended interview in exactly what you describe. She presented looking well groomed and tidy, she got the job and was then provided with a uniform, her previous job was in a shop and again she wore the t shirt and leggings for interview.

sashh · 01/11/2024 11:50

Did she get the job?

RuthW · 01/11/2024 12:15

2chocolateoranges · 31/10/2024 21:24

Not black leggings or black trainers as both are casual.

Smart trousers and a top or a skirt and top.

did she wear black trousers or black skirt to school?

This.

Definitely no trainers.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/11/2024 12:25

Good luck to her, hope she gets the job. If she's neat and tidy and generally presentable it should be OK; like a previous poster said, they will be more concerned as to how personable she is, able to speak clearly and politely to customers.
I do think it worth making sure she has one smart-ish outfit for future eventualities though, a black dress or trousers and some shoes that are not trainers.

RJB73 · 01/11/2024 13:38

She got the job yay!
Starts next weekend.
Thanks everyone.

Well done her!

PorcupinesAreSpiky · 01/11/2024 13:57

yay-well done op’s daughter. That’s great news. I bet you feel dead proud. My daughter is the same age and has just started her first part time job and it fills me with a ridiculous amount of pride 🥰

Congrats to her!

Outfit sounds fine. Honestly when I was in these types of jobs and we had teens come in with CV’s or for interviews etc, I never expected them to be smartly dressed. As long as they were hygienic looking and the clothes weren’t super crumpled or dirty nobody cared!

WoodyCoppicePlantationAlmaMater · 01/11/2024 14:03

Surely it's worth popping to your local tesco or sainsbury superstore and kitting her out in a basic cheap and cheerful smart set of interview appropriate clothes?

They are open until late @RJB73

StarlightLady · 01/11/2024 14:04

It really depends on the shop, the type of customer and the location.

An arts and crafts type shop would expect something very different from, say somewhere selling formal wear.

With any interview the best thing you can wear is a smile and appear confident. I wish her good luck!

StarlightLady · 01/11/2024 14:05

Apologies! I’ve just seen the update. That’s good!
