We are saying goodbye to our lovely dog today

Vet is coming over at noon - he has a chronic condition and we have run out of options for him - he's comfortable but we don't want to leave it till he isn't. It's the right thing to do but it's so hard. He's been my shadow for 10 years, we took him everywhere we went - so many good memories, so much love - I have no idea how I will get through this.

You're doing exactly the right thing - not holding on until his quality of life deteriorates and having the vet come to your home. Be proud of yourself for putting him first. It's hard, but you will get through it.

mamatoTails · 31/10/2024 09:22

Oh no that's so sad. I'm so sorry.

tortietimestwo · 31/10/2024 09:26

I'm really sorry, sending love. You're doing a brave thing to not wait until his quality of life deteriorates further - people rarely regret PTS earlier, but they do regret doing it too late when the animal is really suffering.

You will get through it in time. Allow yourself to grieve, remember the good times and the funny memories, put up a lovely photo or two and one day you'll be able to think about your beloved doggie and smile.

I’m so sorry. I’ve said goodbye to a number of pets over the years and it’s one of the hardest things you have to do as an owner. When you take on a pet it’s in the knowledge that you will outlive them and will be there at their passing.

I promise you, you will get through it, in the knowledge that this release is the final loving act for an old and much loved friend. I’m glad you’ve opted for a home visit - it’s much less stressful and the home environment will be comforting. Not much more l can say other than you’re doing the best for your friend. So many owners hang on and on, when really they are only doing it for themselves - you are so clearly only thinking of your friend. I hope all goes as peacefully as possible. Below is a poem l always found comforting - it’s called The Last Battle. I hope it helps.💐

If it should be that I grow weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so.
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
and please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve it must be you
who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years.
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

I’m so sorry to hear this and as heartbreaking as it is, it takes real love to know when it’s time to say goodbye. It is so brave and selfless and completely right to put your precious puppy’s comfort first.
Much love to you today xx

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/10/2024 09:44

You are doing the right thing you’re making the right decision.
And you’ll get through it because you’re doing it for your lovely dog .

When he closes his eyes and sighs you’ll be there and he’ll know.

And no one can take the memories from you.

Tomorrow will hit you like a wave when you think “ I need to let him out and get his breakfast……ahh”

JazzyJelly · 31/10/2024 09:46

Grief is the price we pay for Love.
Dog love is the absolute best.

I said goodbye to my dog of a lifetime early last year. It’s been tough but I cherished every day of our time together.

Cherish your lovely times together OP. 🌹

Cuddle and talk to your sweet ddog.. Tell him how much you love him. How lucky you were to have had him. Sorry for your loss op.. It's a hard day. Been there once. 4 more to go...

NoEasier2024 · 31/10/2024 11:55

I had to do this for my cat a few weeks ago. It is a very difficult decision but a sign of how much you love him.

Our cat's was a very peaceful passing, surrounded and being stroked by the people she loved.

Thinking of you, OP

Rosscameasdoody · 31/10/2024 12:37

How are you doing OP ?

wiesowarum · 31/10/2024 12:39

You're doing the right thing for him.
Be gentle on yourselves.

Beautifully put and I couldn’t agree more. Having had to say goodbye to the first of our current 4, our 14.5 year old lab girl, a few weeks back this poem is beautiful, but has me bawling like a bairn again 💔

Fourfurrymonsters · 31/10/2024 14:17

I’m so very sorry. I’ve had to do this twice now. The first time I was riddled with guilt for a long time afterwards, thinking “what if”, thinking that I’d actively killed my dog off, but with time I came to see that actually my beloved golden had the very best end any being could hope for; a home visit by a vet he loved, going gently to sleep with his head on my lap and getting his ears rubbed. The second time - just a few weeks ago - was just as horrible, but easier in a way because I absolutely knew we were doing the right thing by our girl. It’s the greatest paradox of bonding with a beloved animal - that our final act of love and kindness for them, is the very hardest for us, the one that tears our heart into a million pieces.
I promise you, you’re doing the right thing by your dog and it will get better. Big hugs.

Been there, not so long ago.
So sorry, op Flowers

Livelongnow · 31/10/2024 16:07

He’s gone, it was peaceful, emotional, difficult. We’ve moved all his stuff to a storage locker - we couldn’t cope with looking at it. We’re drowning our sorrows. Haven’t told our kids yet - they know he was ill - we’ll tell them tomorrow, feels very surreal. Don’t want to go home.
