We are saying goodbye to our lovely dog today

Vet is coming over at noon - he has a chronic condition and we have run out of options for him - he's comfortable but we don't want to leave it till he isn't. It's the right thing to do but it's so hard. He's been my shadow for 10 years, we took him everywhere we went - so many good memories, so much love - I have no idea how I will get through this.

@Livelongnow no words, just the biggest of hugs x

Aw I did this a month ago. He was 15 and had a wellness check mid August when he was slow, but fine. Three weeks later and he was back at the vet, and ten days later we put him down. Really rapid decline. My kids were devastated. But it's always going to be that you outlive your pets. You just give them the best life while they are with you.

He’s gone, it was peaceful, emotional, difficult. We’ve moved all his stuff to a storage locker - we couldn’t cope with looking at it. We’re drowning our sorrows. Haven’t told our kids yet - they know he was ill - we’ll tell them tomorrow, feels very surreal. Don’t want to go home.

It’ll get easier OP, I promise you. The pain of missing them is so hard at first, but in the coming days you will come to realise that you’ve done what every responsible and loving pet owner knows they will have to do in the end. And you’ve done it without a thought for yourself - your first and foremost concern was for your beautiful dog who is now at peace, having gone gently to sleep in his own surroundings and with his beloved people there to support him on his way. It’s an end that most of us want for ourselves and our loved ones, and you should be so proud you had the courage to recognise that it was his time. I’m so very sorry for your loss.

This was us two weeks ago. I'm properly grieving, it is quite difficult. Know it was the right thing but the loss is huge.

OMG this is so hard. It's just me at home for the first time in 10 years - I thought I was coping but today the family have all gone out to work and this is torture, I miss him so much.

It’s so hard, we love them so much and always do our best which includes the last act of love, but it just hurts.

The first time I was home alone I sat on the couch and just cried, then it was loud music and a dance which my girl loved.

just do whatever you can to get through the day, if you would like to chat about him we would love to hear.

That's all I've done today sat on the sofa and cried. Music makes me cry, can't listen to the radio, can't concentrate to any work.

Your dog was a lucky dog.
They don’t all get as loved as yours was.
Treasure your precious memories.
