So how early did your kids wake up this morning

4.40am here. Ages 2 & 3.

I'm already exhausted from moving house last week and have a cold, so feeling very sorry for myself this morning.

Just a thread for those who want to join me in having a moan!

Reading this thread with 4 month old DD in my arms after another feed. We've woken up every 2 hours for the past few nights.

The responses on this thread aren't encouraging - I thought sleep would be better when DC are older? Why are children waking up at 4am?? Do they want to play or eat at that time or just cuddle? How do you all go to work the next day if you wake up at 4?

I was looking forward to sleeping until 9am again one day

I'm so confused!

It's not a given they'll be early risers, DD never has been. Some people on MN put the kids to bed at 6 or 7pm then seem baffled by them waking at 5am.

I think this thread is attracting those who have been up for hours and hours.
I think most people have a period or two when their LOs get out of whack and you'll have a couple of weeks where they're up at 5am for the day, but broadly speaking I think most toddlers wake between 6 and 7am i.e. early but not ridiculous.
You will sleep until 9am one day, but probably not until they're old enough to occupy themselves quietly while you sleep.

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/10/2024 10:02

He's still asleep. He is 13 though and we had a very long and active day yesterday. He does sleep a good 12 hours these days. He's paying me back for the 3 years he slept for around 45 minutes a night that damn near killed me 😭

It's the clock change.

My toddlers normally wake up between 6am - 6.30am, but with the clocks going back they woke up at 4.40am (so 5.40 in old time). This was earlier than usual as the 3yo needed the toilet and woke up his brother in the process. Once the 2yo is awake it's game over for the whole house!

My eldest is 10 and I can count on one hand the amount of post 9am lie ins I've had in the past decade. Sorry.

Mine are older now but I remember the clock change in October being the longest day. Painful. So, sympathies.

greglet · 27/10/2024 10:36

2y5m DS woke at 5.30, but I persuaded him to go back to sleep till 6 (so actually 7). I was awake then, though 😒

He came in with me at 6 and we chilled in bed till 6.40 so it could have been worse!

WYorkshireRose · 27/10/2024 11:16

7:3 (new time), but then we did keep him up a bit later last night in the hope he'd sleep later - doesn't always work out! Unfortunately though the puppy was still awake at 5:30 wanting to go outside and therefore so were we 😴

My 2 kids (2+4) have been sleeping through 12hrs+ straight since 10 months, so you might be one of the lucky ones! 🤞🏻

7.45, which makes sense as on a weekend she can sleep till 8.30/8.45. she's six. I don't mean to be dramatic but I would lose the will to live if she got up as early as some of the kids on here

Me too

redtrain123 · 27/10/2024 18:33

No (u18) kids at home, but the dog has been affected. Today at 4pm , he got up promptly for his food, and couldn’t understand why he wasn’t having it. It was a bit of a battle to keep him settled until 5pm.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/10/2024 18:36

5:55am to feed baby. Toddler up by 6:30am. Tried in vain to get both back to sleep until 7:30. Got up, diapers changed and put breakfast together. Baby went for nap around 10:45, toddler just fell asleep. It's 11:30am here in Vancouver, Canada.
The saving grace is both slept through the night, so I managed about 7 hours sleep! 🥳

Pickingmyselfup · 27/10/2024 19:43

Youngest (7) 6.30 old time which is like clockwork. I was already awake but I usually am so I heard him go to the toilet then back into his room to watch TV.

I got up about 9am old time after having a coffee in bed.

The clocks changing now are no real hardship for the kids but it screws me up for a day and confuses the hell out of me because I never know what the time is.

Tadpolecat · 27/10/2024 19:46

My nearly 3 year old woke at 6:30. He usually wakes 7ish so was expected. I do cosleep with him which I think helps to keep him asleep longer, but it's also something I want to get out of!

witchesbroom · 27/10/2024 20:26

We got very lucky, 5 and 1yo slept till 7.40 they are usually up at 7 on the dot so I was expecting and early one this morning

kikisparks · 28/10/2024 08:14

5am today so the 6am yesterday was a lucky fluke. We stayed in bed though, we tell her it’s not up time yet (I guess a verbal gro clock) and she will stay in our bed but we do get asked “up time yet?” Every ten minutes or so.

Applesandpears23 · 28/10/2024 08:27

Yesterday the baby woke at 5.15 and was ready for a nap again at 7. My older 2 are 7 and 10. To the previous poster who asked when it gets better - my eldest is a night owl and has been sleeping past 8 if we let her since she was about 3. The 7 year old recently learned to put her lamp on and read in bed so now doesn’t wake us when she wakes. It does get better.

Yes mine were both up at 5 today... I am shattered!

Thanks for this response and all other responses about when things will improve. Seems it's up to each individual child and their own bodies. Hopefully DD is a great sleeper like me. If not, then I'm sure I'll survive - or will take up an addiction to caffeine.
