Forgot to add...

Wilko

TSB

At this point it's easier to name what is still in the town than what has left...

No M&S and it is a huge SE Town!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 25/10/2024 17:26

We don't have any mid-range supermarket. We've got the extremes i.e. Booths vs. Aldi.

I'm in north London. I'd love a Uniqlo. I always have pop in to one when I go to central London and I always by something

Exactly! Why isn’t there one at Brent Cross? There’s a new one coming to Coal Drops Yard, which may have opened now, but that’s a faff.

olderbutwiser · 25/10/2024 17:44

Naice town in the south east. We don't have Asda Morrisons Aldi Lidl Tesco Poundland b&m... the list goes on and on.

taggy321 · 25/10/2024 18:58

Asda
Aldi
John Lewis

GroovyChick87 · 25/10/2024 19:34

Actually we don't have a Waitrose.

Junaluma · 25/10/2024 22:48

Farmfoods, Home Bargains, Matalan & Primark.

ThePoshUns · 25/10/2024 23:16

Waitrose. Not poshe enough

spanieleyes22 · 26/10/2024 02:17

In our little shopping area there used to be some interesting shops. Now there is a costa and a Nero and a Starbucks literally next door to each other. Shopping has become so boring. Then there's a lidl a sainsbury an Aldi and an M&S food.

ILoveAnnaQuay · 26/10/2024 02:25

I'm in a small market town so we don't have many "big name" shops. But we are 8 miles from a large town. There's no Zara, no higher end shops (Whistles, Hobbs etc) because its not an affluent area.

We've got half a John Lewis - it does house stuff including material/curtains, lighting, furniture, electrical. But no clothes, perfume, make up etc. It's above Waitrose.

Gingernaut · 26/10/2024 02:31

WH Smith
Morrisons
Lidl
Burger King

Toddlerteaplease · 26/10/2024 02:43

I was surprised that Liverpool didn't have White Stuff. Although it does now, I think.

Peasnbeans · 26/10/2024 02:44

Wilko's RIP.
I hoped more people might say this - a true loss.

Gingernaut · 26/10/2024 04:06

Liverpool and Merry Hill, in the Midlands used to have Clas Ohlsen shops - they were like a cross between IKEA, Home Bargains and Homebase - tools, gadgets and useful little bits for around the garden and home

They still have shops in some Scandinavian countries, but they've completely gone from the rest of Europe

Whenever I'm in a big European city, I also check out whether there's a C&A nearby. If so, usually buy loads of stuff to fill my case with to bring back. Loved it back in the day and still do today (when I can find one).

Clearly C&A foresaw the demise of the UK high street and got out whilst they could before incurring the kind of huge losses that other chains suffered before bankruptcy or takeover/closures etc.

B&Q
It closed a few years back and there's a bowling alley in it's place.
The nearest one now is in the next town or the opposite side of town. Both involve 30 minute motorway journeys with guaranteed heavy traffic at the other end.
Gone are the days we could nip round the corner for a tin of paint or a random piece of skirting board. It's such a faff to get there now - I never thought I would miss a shop like B&Q. Nearest alternative is Wicks and that's tiny, more expensive and total pants.

Edited

Yep, we used B&Q a lot until it closed down and was demolished to make way for another Aldi (our town now has three!). At first, it wasn't too much of a problem as they put a small B&Q in a corner of our Asda, so we could buy basics and it was good for order collections/returns. But after a couple of years, they removed that too. We've now only got a Homebase which is ridiculously expensive and poor stocking, so we order most stuff for DIY and car repairs etc from Amazon online instead.

Could never really understand the B&Q within Asda as it sold exactly the same things as we on Asda's main shelves, i.e. hooks, extension leads, light bulbs, batteries, etc - made no sense at all, they should have put in different things. But the same happens with Argos inside Sainsbury - numerous items on the main store shelves that are also sold in Argos.

Lurleene · 26/10/2024 10:40

It would be quicker to tell you what we have left.

3 massive department stores - gone
M&S- town centre branch gone
Monsoon- town centre branch gone
White Stuff - gone
H&M - gone
New Look - town centre shop gone
Office - gone
Next - town centre branch gone

More empty shops where the businesses went under, Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Cath Kidston etc

We do have lots of places to eat, but with very few shops to entice me to town I'd rather eat locally than travel into town just for that- plus pay a fortune to park. I only really go to town for the cinema these days.

Lurleene · 26/10/2024 10:44

Gosh even more are springing to mind now, W H Smith, Wilko, B&Q all gone from town.

taxguru · 26/10/2024 10:44

@Lurleene

It would be quicker to tell you what we have left.

That's easy. Basically charity shops and money laundering places (Turkish barbers, tattoo parlours, mobile phone accessory shops, obscure oriental food shops, nail bars, american sweet shops and a couple of very dodgy sandwich shops that no one ever goes into)!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/10/2024 10:51

We don’t have but could do with a small M&S food or Little Waitrose. The Costa closed down a few years ago but we’ve got plenty of independent coffee shops plus a Caffè Nero. We have a sainsburys and Iceland and a good farmers market and a Savers.

StoatofDisarray · 26/10/2024 10:52

I live at London Bridge just behind Guy hospital and there's nowhere to buy pants and socks around here apart from in the hospital where you can buy them for patients.

Lurleene · 26/10/2024 10:54

@taxguru Bang on, depressingly. That sums things up perfectly!

Isn’t there an Accessorise within London Bridge station which sells underwear and socks? The Oliver Bonas shop there sells socks.
